Catholic Weddings

Hi, new here!

Hello, ladies! I've been lurking for a few weeks and finally got around to posting a hellow and about me post.

I'm 31, FI is 31. I'm a born-and-raised Catholic, he's converting. We're actually going through RCIA together with the priest who is doing our pre-Cana and performing our wedding ceremony. It's been fun to go through the process with a more adult understanding than I had when I went through Confirmation on my own as a teenager. Our wedding is Oct. 13, 2013, so only 172 days to go -- oh, my!

I have enjoyed lurking on your board and seeing all the wonderful advice and perspective you have given!

<div>Is NFP method choice too personal?  That should be a standard question around here. :)</div>

Love it! Too personal? I don't think so...but then, very little NFP-related is too personal in my world.

<div>Hi, and thanks! I'm pretty open about sharing stuff. I'm kind of thrilled about it all, you know?</div><div>
</div><div>Our church is (obvs) a Catholic Church, BUT what's cool is that it's the church my grandparents were married in and the church my dad was raised in -- it's about 25 minutes from my home town. I (kind of) wish I could get married in my home parish -- where I was baptized, did my First Communion and was Confirmed -- but the priest in charge there now is kind of a jerk and won't allow Sunday weddings. Oh, well. It all worked out. </div><div>
</div><div>Our reception venue is the local country club. We'll have the ballroom and outside patio to ourselves, which is very cool. It has a great view of the local mountains, which should (hopefully) be in full fall foliage.</div><div>
</div><div>I am actually wearing my aunt's dress -- it's my something "old." It's an off-the-shoulder dress with lace sleeves and a full train. It's gorgeous and I just love it.</div><div>
</div><div>Our colors. Uhm...well. The BMs chose purple dresses, the FG is in a Disney-princess-pink stage, so her dress is coral, the GM are in black suits with yellow ties, and the RBs are wearing khakis with white shirts and yellow ties. So...eclectic? My mom has these brilliant ideas for flowers for the BMs flowers that are reds and yellows and oranges and I'm just like, "You go rock that, Mama." She and my SIL have eyes for design that I do not, so I'm all about letting them do whatever they want. </div>

</div><div>Full disclosure: Until I joined TK, I didn't know there was more than one option. I'm planning on askng my lady doc about the different methods. The priest who's doing our pre-Cana is kind of like, "Uhm, yeah, we do these weekend retreats with married couples for a reason. I don't know anything about preventing pregnancy; ask the women on your retreat."

I would seriously, <em>seriously</em>, <strong><em>seriously</em></strong> consider doing outside research. We would love to help you (NFP is one of our favorite topics), but do some digging around on your own too. Check out Living the Sacrament or iusenfp.com.  Unless you go to a Catholic, NFP-only,  or NaPro doc, you may get an answer about how the rhythm method doesn't work. There is a sad lack of education/information about NFP among mainstream OB/Gyns.

Edited to add: Also, your "electic" wedding sounds lovely!

<div>In my lurking, I did discover that NFP is one of the things you all are VERY keen on. I've talked to FI about it, and he's like, "It's your body, so we'll do whatever works best for you, and if we have to try a bunch of things, then we will." So that has been sort of helpful (he's got my back) and sort of not helpful (he doesn't have an opinion, but why would he? He'd never heard of this until we started dating).</div><div>
</div><div>And to top it all off, some of his family are Catholic, but didn't use NFP, so they're not people I could use as resources. *sigh* </div><div>
</div><div>I am planning to ask my lady doc for a referral to a faith-based, NFP-doctor (if she won't/doesn't know how. New insurance, new doctor, yay!....)</div>

[QUOTE]Let me second iusenfp.com. it is an AWESOME resource and the woman who runs it is a med school grad. I encourage you to start reading up soon, because charting takes a bit of getting used to. And I love the idea of your eclectic colors! it sounds beautiful!!

</div><div>And thanks! I hope the color scheme turns out well. I think it will. I'm very laid-back about it. Although I do have some horror stories from wedding planning. :)</div>

  • Thanks for sharing!

Definitely look around at different methods, but whichever you choose, it's most important that you really commit to it and learn it well, preferably with a class and instructor.  I feel sooo much better having an instructor to meet with and help me out.

Also, our colors are kind of eclectic too.  We started with aqua and purple for decor, but then FI wanted navy ties for him and the gm (with their grey suits), and my girls ended up picking more of a teal color for their dresses.  *shrug*  No law ever said you can only have 2 colors!

It's also really awesome that you're using your aunts dress!  We will need pics eventually!

</div><div>I'll have to see if I can find an instructor -- I think that would be the most helpful! </div><div>
</div><div>Yeah, our colors have evolved. I picked the BMs dress in dark green (from Target, so not at all pricey) and they all were like, "Uhm...we really like purple." I was like, "Then let's do purple." FI initially wanted brown suits for the GM until I was like, "yeah, the 1970s called and they want their wardrobe back." I didn't want anything too matchy-matchy, so the eclectic works for us.</div>

  • Welcome and congrats!

Do you have pics of your dress?! I love the idea of wearing a family heirloom!
  • I second (third? fourth?) working with an instructor. If there are not instructors in your area (you may also want to check with your diocese for resources), there are definitely options out there for "distance learning" that you can look into. Having someone to bounce issues off of when there are questions and when you are learning is invaluable.
