It's a little different. And if you are inviting out of town guest it does make it a little hard for them to travel a whole week for both where as if it is spread out they can just make 2 trips. Plus you will have so much going on the weekend before that I think a shower would be stressful.

I should mention, I live 12 hours away. Most of my guests (90%) are local. My MOH can't come in (from DC) until the weekend before the wedding.

I think that is something you should discuss with maybe parents or whoever is throwing your shower. I don't see anything wrong with it but it is a little out of the norm. But these days weddings are so different that it doesn't matter.
