I like the idea that all we need to go there is a drivers license, and that it is a US territory, and it is tropical! Any negatives, positives, or better ideas?

I dont have any personal experience. But my co-worker went to an all-inclusive resort there for his honeymoon, and they LOVED it. The pictures from it were gorgeous.

We went there for our honeymoon and had a great time! we went to san juan and stayed at the Caribe Hilton. We loved it!

Haven't been there since 1997, but I loved the Caribe Hilton. It is a little more isolated.
It was closed when I returned in 1999. There is a strip of hotels on the beach that is closer to the action, but less private. And then there are resorts all over the island. I guess it depends what you are looking for. But you should spend some time in Old San Juan. The rain forest is also worth a visit.
I do remember a lot of traffic, San Juan itself is like any big US city.
