I was thinking that we could sell one car, and get out of that note- does anyone else here share cars with their FI, or is this just rediculous thinking? Parking is not an issue, just insurance and ma

I think it depends on your needs: do you both need to drive to work? If so, then maybe it doesn't make sense to get rid of one car. Why not try just using 1 car for a week or 2 and see how it goes.

Might be kind of a hassle around here where the public transportation isn't great. If you're doing it to save money for the wedding I'd cut back your wedding instead.

We are currently sharing a car. I'm finishing nursing school and the expense of a second car was just too much, since I've had to cut back on the hours I can work a week. It's really not too bad, since we live 2.5 blocks from where I work, I can just literally run right over there. Once I'm working as a full time RN, we'll definitely be adding a second car to the mix, though.

We currently share one car and have been for over a year. H works just down the street so it's not a huge deal, but it has its trials. whoever is not at work is stuck with no car and that sucks.

My FI drives a 15 year old ford truck, and he loves it, and he can fix anything on on it. There is a lot to be said about having an older, simpler vehicle.

If I didn't live in a metropolitan area with really excellent public transportation, I would definitely want a car.

What about selling one car and buying a beater, but saving up to pay cash for it?.. DH and I are only comfortable with one car note at a time. We could afford two, but choose not to.

Rdh2MrsOMFS, that actually sounds like a good idea, like I saw on the post with the nutty poll by Baroo22, an old Honda or Toyota sounds like a good deal!

Several of my friends have gone from being 2-car to 1-car families, and they all said they were surprised at how doable it was, because they'd expected it to be a serious hardship.
It works out especially well for couples where only partner works, and the other one can drive them and then use the car to run errands during the day. Even if you both work, one of you could drive the other one to work and then pick them up in the afternoon. I know at my job, there is never a situation where I need to leave work in the middle of the day in my own car, so not having it here would not be a problem.
I think downsizing to one car is a very good option that gets too easily disregarded these days. I know when my parents were just starting out, it was considered out of the norm if you DID both have cars.
