We have had a few requests to compile a list of recommended vendors for the GR board.  I will leave this as a sticky post for a few weeks until we have compiled a good amount of vendor information, and then I will enter it into an organized format and leave as a sticky at the top of the board so it will be easily accessible.

Knottie Screen Name: AmoroAgain
Wedding Month / Year: October 25, 2009

Ceremony Venue: St. Cecilia's Music Center.  They gave us free reign of the place, and since it was raining, we ended up taking a lot of photos inside with the theater! The only con was that they didn't seem too organized.  When my BM's arrived, the people at the front desk knew nothing about a wedding that day, or our use of the green room to get ready.

Reception Venue: Bistro Bella Vita.  There were absolutely NO negatives to this place.  Though they have guidelines on their website, they will basically allow us to do anything we wanted.  The service was above and beyond, the food was amazing.  They set up the room for us, and took it all down.  It was such an easy experience.
Attire (Dress/Tux Shop): Dress was from The Wedding Bell in Lansing and I had such great service from them.  They continued to communicate with me via email (at my request) because the dress I wanted was over budget.  When it went to sale, they sent me an email immediately and put the gown aside.  Great service!

Florist: Horrocks.  They did a great job, followed my requests to the letter, and well under budget. :)

Photographer:  Lisa Karzcag.  She was so amazing, jumping all over and actually got injured during the day!

Baker/Cake Creator: Sweet Cakes Design, LLC.  Communication was great, Barb was really easy to work with and gave us such delicious cakes to taste.  I loved that her flavors were different and included fresh fruit.  The style was perfect and so, so delicious.

Invitations: We purchased online from Wedding Paper Divas.  Everything went really smoothly.  We were pleased with the quality of the design and the paper.

Hair: Aimee, Sculptures Salon, St. Joseph, MI.  She did an amazing job working with a hairstyle she'd never done before.  Love her!

Jewelry: Earrings, hair comb and veil were purchased from Etsy.

Knottie Screen Name: Monkey0919
Wedding: Sept. 19, 2009, Holland, Michigan

Location:  Ventura Pines Cottage.  It was exactly what I had imagined for our outdoor wedding.  We had the house for 4 days and had plenty of time to get everything set up.  It has hammocks and a fire pit which were great for our rehearsal dinner.  The house is right on Lake Michigan so we had an amazing backdrop to our ceremony.  We were able to let our out-of-town guests stay with us so they weren't paying for a hotel.  We brought in our own caterer and provided our own alcohol.

Cake:  Second Floor Bakery.  Since I live out of state, I had to arrange this by phone and email.  The prices were very reasonable.  I emailed Katie (I believe that was her name) a picture of what I would I would like.  She made an absolutely beautiful cake and it was sooo delicious!  We only had about 50 guests and had enought cake for 75.  There wasn't much left over.

Hair/Makeup:  Salon Chevaux.  The ladies there were wonderful.  They did a fantastic job on my and my bridesmaids' hair.  My makeup looked perfect.  We had such a fun time there getting ready and we all looked gorgeous when we walked out!

My dad arranged for the tent and all food so I don't know those names.  When I get them, I would definately recommend them all!  My uncle is a photographer and he normally does portraits but I asked him to do our wedding.  He also did our engagement photos and they are beautiful.

Screenname: TheWop
Wedding Date: August 9, 2008

Ceremony/Reception Venue: Quail Ridge Golf Club.  I fell in love with the pricing of this place first of all.  They were extremely affordable for a golf club.  We had an outdoor ceremony and it was beautiful.  It was a great room for our reception.  They were extremely accomodating, and the food was amazing.  I still have people raving about the food almost 2 years later.  Great place for pictures too.  They have an amazing course.

Florist: Eastern Floral.  Fantastic.  We wanted something very simple and they totally nailed it for a great price.

Photographer: Kyle Bultman.  I can't even put into words how much I LOVE our wedding pictures.  He and his wife did an AMAZING job.  People are always asking us who did our pictues.  I still love going through them to admire their work.  They were also great with working with our budget.

DJ/Band: Moonlighting.  Rich was great to work with.  He was fun and you could tell he knew what he was doing.  We always had people on the dance floor.  Even my 70 year old grandmother was out there!

Ceremony Music: Cellist- Steven VanRavenswaay.  Great music.  He even wrote a song just for our wedding.  I was touched.  I would highly recommend him.

Hair: Elizabeth at Design 1 Cascade.  She was great!   She is great at making a picture or vision a reality.  Very talented.

Honeymoon:  Aventura Spa Palace.  We had such a great time at this resort.  It was gorgeous and service was perfect.   They made our honeymoon a dream come true!

Feel free to page me on the GR Nest board if you have additional questions or would like to see pictures.

I don't think I would be able to pull off our wedding without our wedding coordinator, Dee Mitchell of Elements of Elegance.  She is AMAZING!!!  We hired her for DOC because she had the most reasonable prices and decided to have her as our florist too.  She is the smartest choice I made.  Dee is on top of everything and I feel like I have a friend looking out for me.  She really cares what the couple has to say and what their vision is.  I know that our day will be perfect with Dee running the show.  I would recommend her to anyone in a heartbeat!

I can't say enough about Judy and Kelly. They are from my hometown and amazing people to work with. Wedding Month / Year: May 2010
Our wedding was just over a week ago and it was awesome! Everything went great!

Ceremony Venue: First Covenant Church, Grand Rapids - my home church so knowing everyone working there helped a lot. The church's wedding coordinator was so helpful and got everything organized and ready to go - I didn't have to worry about anything.

Reception Venue: Noto's Italian - We had a blast here! Cocktail hour started at 6 and John & I arrived around 6:30. The appetizers were already gone but dinner started a few minutes before 7 so I don't think anyone went hungry. The food was delicious and everything went smoothly! They let us stay late when we didn't want to stop dancing and were readily available for any questions or things we needed. I highly recommend them.

Attire (Dress/Tux Shop): Dress - Becker's Bridal - my dress was great, it came in very quickly and I thought they had a great selection.
Tuxes - Men's Wearhouse - a little expensive but easy to work with, especially with seven groomsmen spread around the US

Florist: J's Fresh Flowers - we went the do-it-yourself route and it was a blast. The employees were there if we had any questions or needed materials, but otherwise they left us to work.

Photographer: Paul Carlson - Amazing, he is just getting started but does awesome work! I've known him my whole life and have nothing but good things to say. He brought along a second shooter even though we hadn't asked for one and worked very quickly so we could get in out of the heat.

Baker/Cake Creator: Picked up cakes from Costco, very easy and everyone enjoyed them! Noto's also did a small decorated cake for us and it was beautiful. I don't think I got to eat any though!

Linen/Decor: Decor Elegance - Again I've known Lisa for a really long time, she does amazing work, our tables look great! If you go to her website she has photos from Noto's of the ceiling decoration that she did for us as well - it looked beautiful.

Wedding Planner/Day of Coordinator: JS Events - I know Jessica through mutual friends, she does day of coordinating on the side (its not her full time business) and she is awesome. I think hiring her was the best thing I did for the wedding! She met with me twice before, set up at the reception, got everyone where they needed to be and made sure everything got returned from the reception. Highly recommend!

DJ/Band: Friend - Chaz Evans - well he isn't available for hire, but he was great too. So good to have a friend DJing with great taste in music - I gave him a couple guidelines and let him go with it. So much fun!

Invitations: Five Feet Tall - Our invitations were screen printed by hand, we got a lot of compliments!

Hair & Makeup - Design 1 in Cascade - they did a great job, I got compliments on my hair and makeup all day & night!
Honeymoon: Excellence P*nta Cana - we had a great time there, just relaxed on the beach and by the pool, good food too!

Other Misc Vendors (Photobooth, Uplighting, etc):
Photobooth - Snap Happy Photobooth - Another friend, John is just starting out and did an amazing job! Photos turn out great and we had a great time looking at the pictures the next day.

Knottie Screen Name: Chelsea&curtGR
Wedding Month / Year: June 2009

Ceremony Venue: Hager Park  After a problem with spring grove i gave my mother in law the task of finding a new place since i was in the U.P. Everything was great the only thing is if you want an outside area its first come first serve. luckily on a sunday no one was there and it was for the most part secluded compared to spring grove.
Reception Venue: St. Cecilia  I loved it everything was perfect. if i had any questions they were always answered. it couldn't have been at a better price either.
Attire Tux: Bunny Tuxedo  the tuxes i picked were better in person.  the price was under 100 compared to mens warehouse and even Brial lane in dorr that were the same tux for 30 bucks more. i was very happy with everything.
Florist:  Waters Edge near Gun Lake/Wayland  I went to other places that were wanting to charge way too much and the ladies here were so easy to talk to and get my vision accross. They had suggestions in areas i wasn't sure about. they went above and beyond i couldn't have been happier.
Photographer: Clever Creations   Its an ify. i love the pictures she took, the price and amount of pictures there were (over 3000)  I ordered pics in march and still waiting for my pics to be delivered to me.
Caterer: Brann's catering  i think the food could have been a bit better. for me i had beef and it seemed a bit dry.
Baker/Cake Creator:  Sweet Cakes Design  Awesome! i let them pick the design all i asked for was texture and it was exactly what i hoped for and more. delicious.
Invitations: I did them myself but i found a place that sold invitation paper at a great price.  http://www.textstyledesigns.com/

Wedding date: June 4, 2010

Ceremoney Venue: Hillcrest CRC, hudsonville.  this is the church where I grew up.  everything went great, we were given the sanctuary when we needed it for the rehersal and they let me use what rooms I wanted and what I needed for the ceremoney.

Reception Venue: The Pinnacle Center in Hudsonville.  I cant say enough good things about The pinnacle center!!   Tammy was awesome she answered all the questions I had.  She helped me make decisions on things I had no idea about.  She took care of everything the day of, when I arrived for the reception I was given a peek of the room before the guest arrived.  It was BEAUTIFUL!!  It was set up the way i envisoned and the lighting was perfect!  I was able to get a vegetarian meal for the one person who needed it as well as a kids meal for the one child at my reception.  So many people told me the wait staff was wonderful, quick, polite and they got what they wanted immediately.  The food was delious ( all prepared onsite by their chef.)  The bar tender was one of theirs onsite, he was great, the guests loved him.  He also came out during dinner to the head table to take drink orders for us.  If you want any other information on the pinnacle center feel free to private message me!

Attire:  I got my dress at The Bridal Lane in Dorr.  they were great, I just walked in and they helped me right away.  there was no pressure to buy.  They even told me how to save money on my veil even though it ment not buying from them.  My girls bridemaids dresses came from here as well.  they were great about having a couple of my girls just call in their orders because they lived out of town.  The tuxes came from Bunny Tuxedo in Grandville.  They were really nice and it was the warehouse store so when changes needed to be made in sizes the day we picked up, it was no problem!  I was happy we decided to go through them.

Florist:  Gail Vanderlaan.  Gail was great, she helped me pick flowers since all I knew was my color.  she had several books for me to look at and get ideas.  She explained she doesnt like to do the same bouquet for 2 brides.  She delivered everything the day of and set up.  She also came back to the reception hall at midnight to take it all down!  I had several complements on how pretty my flowers were!

Photographer: Holli Ann Studios.  I enjoyed working with Holli and her assistent Joe.  She had a couple suggestions on where to take outside photographs the day of the wedding.  I havent seen my sneek peak yet but I am excited to see them!  She can be a little bossy sometimes but it happened only when the groomsmen needed it!

Cake Bakery: Second Floor Bakery in Holland.  My cake was so yummy!  It was also what I had envisioned, down to the smallest details.  during my tasteing we were given several flavors of cake, frosting and filling, all of which were very good.  we decided on the Champaign cake, raspberry filling and buttercream frosting.  I was also able to get a seperate cake from my husband that was a carrot cake, he said it was very good!  I was very happy with the cake.

DJ:  my dj was the house dj at the pinnacle center.  as part of your room rent there your dj is included.  he had me fill out a very detailed sheet on what songs to be played, what not to be played and what is to be played during all the special dances.  He played music that everyone could dance to.  we had a lot of classic rock.  He keep the dance floor full.  I had complements from guests on the music he played, they said he was the best dj they have every had at a wedding!  our dance floor was still packed at midnight during the last song!  I wish i knew his name so i could recommend him!

Invitations:  I ordered my invitations from the Advance newspaper in Hudsonville.  they had like 8 books of invitations for me to look through and choose from.  I was also given 20% off my order because I ordered through them!  It only took a week for them to come in!

Alterations: Deb Zondlak:  I love Deb, I've used her before and she does great work.  She is so much fun to work with, she keeps me laughing!  She is very affordable as well.  She does it out of her house, she has a private fitting studio in her home so her family leaves you alone during your fitting.

Hair: I had my hair done at Design one in Grandville.  Nicole did my hair.  I loved it, she asked me to bring in pictures for my hair trial so she knew what i was envisioning.  on the date she was waiting from me when i arrived and was ready with what tools and product she would need.  I would definatly go back to her agian for any service!

Makeup: my make up was done at Design one in Grandville as well.  Irene did my make up, she was very nice and wanted my imput on colors.  she asked about my daily make up so she could make me look like me.  I have very watery eyes that are sensitive, she was able to get the right product for me. She was able to get eye liner on me without my eyes getting all watery, no one can do that!  She was great!

Honeymoon: wedding night we were at the JW Marriot in Downtown GR.  That was AWESOME!!!!! they knew it was our wedding night so when we arrived we found a bottle of wine, chocolate covered strawberries and cheese and crakers in our room for us with a congratuatary note.  we were up on the consiare floors so we had an amazing view and they checked with us to see if we needed anything before we fell asleep.  we also were given  passes to the private lounge on the top floor.  we didnt make it up there but it sounded nice.  We then drove up to mackinaw city and stayed at the Holiday inn express.  we had a room with a jacuzzi.  they were very nice there and gave us discount coupons to get over to the island.

Jewelry:  I got my jewelry at Septembers Bride in Holland.  I was so disappointed with them.  I ordered my jewelry at the end of febuary and recieved it the week before the wedding(first weekend in June), they told me it would take 4 weeks to come in.  I had to keep calling them to see when it was in and to find out what was going on, no one knew where it was.  and then when it finally came in, they tried to double charge me!  I was very disappointed and angry with them, it was what stressed me out about the planning process!  I will not go back to them if i have a choice.

Ceremony & Reception  Venue: Historic Bowens Mills, Middleville, MI - The venue was fabulous! We were able to go in the night before to decorate, which relieved a ton of time in the morning. We had paid the late cleanup fee, and since we were completely cleaned up and torn down by 11:30, the owners came down and returned our clean up fee. Most people would probably consider the price high, but this is a Histroic site that receives no state funds, and we believe in preserving history, plus of you add in everything they include, its a great deal! We would definately recommend Bowens Mills to any one!!! A+
Attire (Dress/Tux Shop): Fantastic Finds, Lansing, MI - if you want an incredible shopping experience, then go here!! I had been to so many shops, and they felt like they were just crowded and out to make a buck. If you want a Say Yes to the Dress experience, go here. The dresses are incredible!! You get a private room, and they simply cater to you. I purchased and Essence of Australia dress that was not in a 150 mile radius (I know I called all of the other Essence stores). Also had alterations done here, and the work was wonderful. Very easy to get to in Lansing. Prices are a little higher, but the quality of the dresses are incredible. This isnt Davids Bridal! Paid 1450 for my dress thats including it being custom built due to height, 150 for alterations. Ask for Donna, she knows what she is talking about!
A+++++ ; Suits were purchased at JC Penny ;

After shopping at many stores, we finally found the bridesmaid dresses at Alexa Claire in Portage, MI. We originally went there looking for Mori Lee dresses, only to discover that they were not in yet. We found 2 dresses we loved, but agreed on one by B2, a part of Jasmine Bridal. The dresses were in our budget, we are getting them in the color "Tahiti" and tea-length.
Updated- they turned out fabulous!! The girls looked incredible and my girls all told me they could easily wear it again, either to a nice dinner or a cocktail party! What I liked about the salon is that you are the only people in there so no bumping in to others!
A+

Florist: I made our flowers, but they were all purchased at Hobby Lobby. I made a total of 6 bouquets and 4 boutineers. I bought all of the flowers when theywere 50% off and had less then $100 into flowers.
Photographer: Laura Munro, Hastings, MI - loved working with Laura. She loves details, and I got a quick peek at some of the pics, and am really excite to see the finished product!! Plus she is extremely reasonable. As of 2010, our package included our engagement pictures, the wedding (arrived 2.5 hours before the ceremony and was there till almost 10PM, so roughly 8 hrs) plus we get shared copyright to all of our photos! A steal at $500! A+
Videographer:friend of the family
Officiant: Sharon was fabulous. We truly enjoyed her being there. She made sure everything went smoothly at rehearsal and helping my overall vision come to life. $400 A+
Caterer: LOved the food!!! For appetizers we had deviled eggs and deli rollups, then for dinner we had the barbeque buffet - bourbon bbq chicken, grilled portablla mushrooms, bbq salmon, steamed greenbeans, escalloped apples and pecans, salad, veggie tray and rolls. In addition, we had the childrens buffet of chicken fries, pigs in a blanket, apple sauce, plus more. Not too bad for 10.50 an adult and 5.50 a kid (including apps).A+
Baker/Cake Creator: We did cheese cake and ice cream. The cheesecake came from Sams Club and was 15 a box of 68 minis, and the ice creamcame from Plainwell Ice Cream Company, 104 for three 5 gallon boxes. Lots of compliments!! A
Linen/Decor: The table clothes came from our caterer, Adeline Leigh. The cost 2.50 a linen and looked great. We had a surprise from my MOH and one of my sisters - they got us chair covers! My MOH MIL owns a decor company in Kalamazoo, and they got them through them!! Loved the look!
Wedding Planner/Day of Coordinator:My sister- she did fabulous, but doubt she is going to come over from Clarkston to help you all out!
DJ/Band: very easy to work with, made changes easily and kept the music spinning all night. Played everything exactly like I wanted it. Only downfall was that my slideshow started before it was supposed to, but I think that might have been my brother in laws fault! A

Reception:  Grand Rapids Hilton- A
The Hilton was extremely professional in every way.  They had every detail under control, even ones we forgot about.  The service and food was amazing and all of our guests complimented it.  The only reason I am not giving them an A+ is because Mike Kelly isn't great about communication which can be stressful.  Keep in mind if you choose the Hilton, though, that even if he isn't great with communication he will be on his game 110% the day of and everything will go perfectly.
Many of our guests stayed at the hotel as well and really enjoyed their experience, as did Andy and I.  The rooms were very nice and classy.  We also chose the Hilton because the Spinnaker bar/restaurant is there and it was a safe way for the party to continue after the wedding was over.

Flowers:  Elements of Elegance - A+
Dee is beyond amazing!  I had to do a lot of planning from Washington, DC and she was very flexible.  I also had 4 different people in contact with her regarding my wedding which was extremely confusing but she handled it all perfectly.  My flowers looked great the entire day and I did not have to worry about a single thing.  Dee is also a wedding coordinator and although I did not have one at all, if I did I would have had her.  I would highly recommend her services.

Cake:  My Aunt Janice - A
My aunt made great cakes for each table and for display!  She doesn't do the fanciest work but I also didn't mind that so I was very happy.  I wasn't sure what flavors I wanted but the ones she came up with her amazing and all of my guests raved about the cakes.

Ceremony:  St. Paul the Apostle in GR- A-
The day of the wedding and the rehearsal went amazingly.  I also greatly benfitted from the pre-marital counseling they required.  My only complaint was that the wedding coordinator there was a titch scatter brained which made me a little stressed.  At the end everything was great!

Photographer:  Marc Photography in Zeeland- A++++++
I haven't even seen all of the photos yet but I am already ecstatic about their services!  Andrew and Tiffany are amazing to work with.  They have great suggestions and go with the flow very well.  The pictures turned out amazing and everyone thinks so.  Their packages are great prices compared to some places in GR but you don't suffer in quality at all.

DJ:  Complete Music, Chip Kozal A++
Chip was an amazing DJ.  He even got Andy's family who never dances at weddings to dance and everyone had a great time.  He took requests, asked frequently if we were content, played great music, etc.  The offices at Complete Music were also extremely professional and efficient.  I would highly recommend them to anyone and everyone!

Dress:  Bridal Elegance in Cascade:  A-
The bad:  The day I went to look at dresses the store was slammed (possibly too much?) and no one helped my mom and I with dresses.  I felt that because we didn't bring a huge posse and swing our designer bags around we weren't given equal attention which was annoying.  That is my only complaint though!
The good:  I was able to get my dress seriously discounted for various reasons when I bought it (the day I tried on dresses).  Make sure you ask about such discounts.  At the time I bought my dress we got a discount for buying the sample, buying it the day we first came to the store, paid in cash, and my wedding was more than 6 months away.
The alterations were also more than a fair price and they did a fantastic job with them.  My dress had a few tears (lace) and they repaired them extremely well.  Their seamstress definitely knows what she is doing!
My mom also bought her dress there and she was very last minute about it and yet they provided excellent service, helped her find a great dress, and were able to alter it in time for the wedding.

BM dresses:  JCrew A+
My BMs all seemed to really like their dresses and it fit them very well.  They were all quite busty gals and they all said they really like how well the dresses fit their body types.

Hair:  Belladonna in Cascade A+++++
I have gone to Belladonna for quite a few years now and they are always perfect.  I didn't have any pictures when I walked in but Tara still did a great job on my hair and my SIL's hair.  Meagan did two of my other BMs hair and they were both so happy with how she did it.  Tara and Meagan also did my MOH and I's mani-pedis and those also looked amazing.  I recommend this salon/spa for anything and everything.

Rings:  Vandenberg Jewlers in Cascade- A+
Their prices were much better than any stores around/in the mall.  FI actually did all of the work with them but he was extremely pleased with their professionalism and services.

Tuxes:  Dunhill Tuxedo A+
The men folk all looked perfect.  The only complaint was that they sometimes misplaced members of our BP's measurements.  The organization wasn't the best but they ended up delivering beyond expectations for the wedding so I can't really complain.

Honeymoon:

Airtran-B:  Great prices and great service on the flight, however, when something goes wrong they aren't very helpful.  We missed our connection flight to Orlando because while in GR they held the plane for other guests and yet the same courtesy was not given to us in Baltimore.  We couldn't fly out until the next morning and they gave us the hardest time about finding another flight.  They also sent us all over the airport to file a complaint AND to find H's checked luggage.  In the end they held the luggage for our flight the next day but I didn't appreciate not knowing where it was.  Other than that, everything ran on time.

Downtown Disney Hilton- A-:  It was a nice hotel and it was in a great location but it wasn't perfect.  The transportation to the parks was sometimes unpredictable.  They would leave early or come late and the schedule was weird.  The staff at the hotel was polite but several times we called the concierge and they forgot us on hold.

I'm not a frequent poster here on The Knot, I mostly use the boards at http://boards.weddingbee.com (check out our wmichigan board!), but I thought I would pass along my photog's name -
Katie DeWinter, blog and site at www.katelorrainephoto.com
Katie is awesome to work with, very professional and fun, and her prices are waaay more reasonable than a lot of WMichigan photogs with her quality of photos! It took me a while to find her, so if this can help anyone else in their search for an amazing photographer with realistic prices, flexible packages and a great attitude, than I'm glad to have helped!

No other vendors to mention, really, mostly all DIY or friends of the family. :)
How am I supposed to taste test caterers from halfway around the world?!

I just received the proofs from my engagement session with Marc Photography in Zeeland and I love them!  Tiffany and Andrew are a husband and wife team who work together on wedding photos, and they do a great job blending their ideas together to create an awesome set of photos.  Tiffany had a great suggestion for my fiance and I to include an airplane (he's a flight instructor) in our photos, and they turned out great.  They were also willing to make the drive to Kalamazoo so that we could include a few locations that have meant a lot to us over the past few years.  These two photographers are fantastic to work with and I defiantly recommend them!

Here's a link to our engagement session if you'd like to check it out:

Wedding date: 08/28/10

If anyone would like to contact any of my vendors for a quote, PM me and I will get you their information.

Ceremony: Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church; Holland, MI
Our coordinator Helen Mantooth did a great job of getting the group organized at the rehearsal and going through every single detail of the ceremony. She spent over an hour with us at the rehearsal until everyone was comfortable with what they would have to do. She also showed up before the wedding party on Saturday to help make sure we all got ready and she stood at the door "directing" us and made sure the processional was perfect.

The officiant Father Charles Hall also did a wonderful job. We had several meetings with him prior to the ceremony to talk about what we wanted; and he delivered flawlessly. His homily was beautiful, and relevant both to H and I as well as the readings we had selected.

I had originally booked an outside musician to perform the ceremony music; however he had to cancel at the last minute due to a conflict in his schedule. The music director at OLL - Carol McAndrew - stepped up and quickly found an extremely talented pianist (Chris Janowiak) and cantor (Lisa Homik) who did a wonderful job. Both Chris and Lisa are parishoners and are available to perform other weddings if requested.

Final grade: A

Reception: Alpen Rose Restaurant; Holland, MI
Jerry Hill is the manager and event coordinator at the Alpen Rose. He was amazing. During the planning, he met with us as many times as we needed, answered questions, had tons of great ideas to share. He was truly a joy to work with. He was present during the entire set up of the reception, and stayed until the reception ended. He mingled with our guests, and provided incredible service to anyone who needed it. (i.e., my MIL wanted a Strawberry Daiquiri and our bar package didn't cover that... he went to the kitchen and made one for her himself.)

The waitstaff at the Alpen Rose was quick, efficient, and attentive to all of my guests. We had 1 server assigned to the Head Table; and 1 server assigned to every 2 guest tables.

Final grade: A++

Florist: Diane Gietzen; Holland, MI

Diane is a friend of my mom's and she was the only florist that we interviewed for the wedding. She did an incredible job of listening to my thoughts, and turning them in to a reality. I even went so far as to go to JoAnn's and buy spools of ribbon in the exact colors that I wanted, so I could give her (and other vendors) pieces of the ribbons. The flowers were absolutely perfect. The bouquets were exactly what I wanted and they held up beautifully! My parents are going to preserve my bouquet for me; I was at their house yesterday and it was just sitting in some water. It looked exactly the same as it did on Saturday when she brought it to me. The floral arrangements and centerpieces were creative and unique. I would highly recommend her.

Final grade: A

Photographer: Kelli Wiseman (Clever Creations Photography); Comstock Park, MI
Kelli was amazing. I booked her in January and in our initial meeting, she gave me several pages worth of "worksheets" to fill out with information about our family members, wedding party, who is who, and what kinds of pictures we want. She also had a 4 page list of "must take" photos and wanted me to add as much as possible to it. We had her for 8 hours - along with a second photographer (her assistant, and he was also very talented) - and I saw that she had her list with her at all times. She checked off all the photos as we went. She did a great job of moving through the photos quickly, with not a lot of "down" time between shots. She was fun and kept us laughing throughout all the shoots. My H was very skeptical about "having to smile" for so many photos - and even he was raving about her by the end of the night. I plan to use her for professional photos for a long time.

Final grade: A++

Limousine: Crystal Limo; Grand Rapids, MI
These guys did a great job and delivered exactly what I asked for. I was originally planning on using another limo service but there was a conflict in schedule about 2 months prior to the wedding. I thought for sure I was screwed. I called Crystal (at the suggestion of the other limo company who wasn't available); they had a car available for me and booked me over the phone. They called me the day before to confirm the details. The limo driver showed up early; he was dressed in a tux; he was so helpful getting drinks loaded in and helping the girls step up in to the vehicle. My only complaint was that they sent a driver who was not at all familiar with the geography we were in (Holland... the company was from Grand Rapids). But luckily my brother sat up front and was able to help direct him where to go.

Final grade: A-

DJ: DJ Sound Solution; Marion, IN
Jason Carpenter and his partner James Hoving were good friends of mine from High School. They started their DJ service while we were still in school; and their first paying gig was actually my 16th birthday party. So of course, I called them for my wedding reception. They were incredible! They run operations in all of Michigan, and all of Indiana - and are also willing to travel in the MidWest. The music was perfect; and they delivered my special requests exactly as I asked. Jason got up and danced with the wedding party members, and he even got my 94 year old grandmother on the dance floor. He performed a hilarious break dance. He did a great job of motivating all my guests. I saw people moving on the dance floor that I never expected.

For you girls who know me, I've mentioned before that my H is a huge Peyton Manning/Indianapolis Colts fan. Jason lives near Indianapolis; and also works for the radio station that sponsors the Colts. When we did the garter toss, Jason presented an authentic Peyton Manning jersey (that Peyton had actually worn during a game) and gave it to my H. He was thrilled!! He wore it for the garter toss (and H actually did a mock quarterback play call before he removed the garter haha).

Final grade: A++

Wedding Month / Year: August 14, 2010

Videographer: A++++++++ www.foreverfossilized.com" target="_blank" title="Forever Fossilized">Forever Fossilized - I am starting with this, because I honestly cannot say how extremely happy I was with our videographer. I wasn't even going to do a video, I figured pictures would be enough and with only 2 months of planning, I wasn't really thinking about it. Joe and Katie Fasel are friends of ours, and I knew they had done other videos, but like I said I just didn't care too much. The Monday before our wedding, my husband said he had watched a video and thought I would like to have one. I called Katie, and they actually weren't booked, so we went with it. I just got my video and I cannot believe I ever thought of not having one! Now if any brides ask for one piece of advice, I would say Get a video! It captures soooo much that pictures never can. Joe and Katie are AWESOME to work with. Since they are a husband/wife team, Katie was always with me the whole day, and Joe was always with my husband so they did not miss anything. The quality was awesome and their editing is amazing. They even make a fun little trailer that they posted on facebook and all our friends and family loved. And even though I got married up north, they are based in GR and will travel. I loved pretty much everything about my wedding, as you will see from my reviews, but this is a MUST HAVE. Seriously call them, you will not be sorry, and it will be one of the best memories you have.

Ceremony Venue:  Bayfront Park - Waterfall Area- Petoskey, MI - A++++ My fiance and I wanted to do something out of town, but not so far away that people couldn't come. Petoskey is GORGEOUS, the waterfall area at Bayfront Park was perfect, and only $125 to reserve with the city. We rented chairs from Taylor Rental and it was about $80 for 40 chairs.

Reception Venue: The Perry Hotel - H.O. Rose Dining Room A++++  Cannot say enough about how wonderful and perfect the Perry Hotel was. For one, they upgraded us to the Rose Dining Room a week before the wedding (we had a different room at first, which was still gorgeous, but the Rose room overlooks the bay and is SO pretty!) Everyone raved about the food, many said it was the best wedding food they had ever had, and the pricing was very reasonable. We offered 4 plated options ranging from $23-$33. The staff was super friendly and everything was perfectly smooth. This was also more impressive because I planned the whole wedding in 2 months! (Was SO lucky they had my date available)

Attire (Dress/Tux Shop):
David's Bridal- B
Yeah, it's David's. I went here because I had 2 months to plan and had to get something off the rack as soon as possible to have time to alter it. Luckily, I found my dress the first time looking, and only needed a bustle added. I loved the dress, but they were supposed to clean it and "bead check" it, which I had to wait 3 weeks for this, and when I got it, I saw loose beads right away. Luckily I had a great alterations lady (below) and she did a thorough bead check that was great.

Flower Girl Dress- Burlington Coat Factory! My flower girl was only 15 months old, so I needed a baby dress. Burlington Coat Factory had by far the best selection I found, and it was only $20. She looked absolutely adorable!

Men's Warehouse
- My husband handled this- he had the guys buy suits which with the deal they had ended up being about $175 each. All the guys were more than happy to buy a suit so that they had it to keep instead of renting a tux. And they looked great!

Florist: A++++++ Since we would be out of town and got married at 6:00 pm, I worried about coordinating real flowers. So, my MIL knew of a lady whom she gets all of her flowers from and I sent her pics of what I liked and she did fake flowers for me. They turned out absolutely GORGEOUS, and I love that they didn't wilt and still look just as good as the day I got married. :) Much less hassle! Obviously if you go fake, just make sure you get someone who knows what they're doing. :) My flower lady's name is Connie Schroeder, and she is from the Flint area. Her email is ConnieFlowers101@aol.com in case anyone is interested.

Photographer: A+++++ My photographer was Leslie Mulder (soon to be Leslie Koon (in less than a month!)) Leslie does an amazing job and takes some really creative shots! She is super reasonable (whole day package for $850) and I think the best part is you just get a disk of all your pictures, so you can easily print whatever you want. I was able to print a bunch of extras for my family and bridal party. I love that I have that access to all of them! Her website is www.Selahmemories.weebly.com/" target="_blank" title="Selah Memories">Selah Memories

Officiant: James Johnson - A++ - After our plans fell through to have my huband's uncle ordained to do the ceremony, we were stuck having to use a rent-a-reverend which I was not happy about. But James was very nice and professional, and reasonable at $160. He does most of Northern Michigan I believe. His email is minidu@gmail.com

DJ/Band: We were originally going to only have about 30 people, so we weren't going to have dancing, just dinner. But when the number grew to 52, we wanted something. So, we went with an ipod. And it was SO MUCH FUN. I was worried about it, but it worked out great. We did have a designated friend to play certain songs at certain times (first dance, etc.) but the rest of the time, people could go up and play what they want, and everyone had a blast. Granted, make sure there is a nice sound system at your venue before attempting. The Perry Hotel let us use theirs, and so it sounded professional, but just a lot more fun. Definitely go for it if you are considering this, we saved a good $400-$500!

Invitations: $40 at Target. I planned the wedding in 2 months, which means finding the venue and sending out invites in the first 2 weeks. Target was the easiest and I actually got a lot of compliments on them, no one could believe I printed them on my own computer. :)

Alterations: A++++++ Deb Zondlak - 616-896-7767 - I got her as a recommendation from the Knot. She was reasonable, super nice, and did a great job. My dress had a side train which is a bit different, and it looked perfect. Definitely recommend her!

Transportation: Saved on this because we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express - Petoskey- which has complimentary limo service!! We pulled up to the ceremony site and walked down the aisle out of the limo. And they came and got us at the end of the night. It was awesome :)

Hair: Grondin's in Petoskey. I was a bit worried because it's kind of like a Supercuts, but I didn't want my girls to have to spend $90 just to get their hair done at an expensive boutique. I have to say, Grondin's did an amazing job. I LOVED my hair, it was perfect, and all the girls looked great too, for only $40!

Makeup: Got it done beforehand at Clinique at Macy's, bought all the stuff, and did it myself. I have never liked when other people do my makeup, so I was really happy with this option. And I am definitely a Clinique convert now. :)

Honeymoon: We went to the Murray Hotel on Mackinac Island for a few days, but are planning to take a real honeymoon trip to Europe later this year. I have to say, the Murray was hard because the room was SO small. And I paid extra for a "patio" room which has a view of the pool, not an actual patio. So, in the future, instead of staying on the island, we will stay at the Holiday Inn Petoskey and go to the island for a day or something.

Jewelry: I looked forever for jewelry, and finally found www.advantagebridal.com/pearl-and-rhinestone-necklace-and-earring-jewelry-set-517m.html" target="_blank" title="this set">this set. I paid extra for faster processing and shipping since I only had 3 weeks when I ordered it. It came well before the wedding was exactly what I hoped for. Loved it!

Other Misc Vendors (Photobooth, Uplighting, etc): I definitely want to recommend the Holiday Inn Express Petoskey for anyone getting married up there. I mean, the complimentary limo service alone is reason for this, but it's also very new, the rooms were big and clean, the beds were super comfy, and to top it off, the staff was extremely nice and helpful. Our room was $180 a night, this was with a 20% discount for booking 10 or more rooms. We also got our wedding night free for booking 10 or more rooms. Some guests stayed at the Perry Hotel and loved that too. :)

Feel free to contact me with questions- like I said, my best advice- hire a videographer! (Preferably Forever Fossilized!) :) Happy planning!

List Recommendations and any pros/cons you would like to include for each vendor/venue, as well as the approximate price you paid (if you are comfortable, if not - leave this out) for the products/services for each:

Ceremony Venue: Corey Church of the Nazarene -- price was great, but we are members

Attire (Dress/Tux Shop): David's Bridal -- hated them, they messed up my dress order 3 times so I didn't get to wear a dress I even remotely liked for the wedding

Photographer: www.jacqart.com -- AMAZING. Great artistic eye. We LOVED her.

Caterer: Michelle at A Pizza Yen in Portage -- we had a backyard reception, and she was PERFECT for this. The food was incredible.
Alterations: Again, DB, and I would stay away

Wedding Month / Year: 09.10

Ceremony Venue: {B+} Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park - Absolutely beautiful Place, Johanna was wonderful.  It ended up being great, a lot more expensive then what I had originally planned. Lots of little add ons and all of them seem to be $100.

Reception Venue: {A+} Blythefield Country Club They were absolutely incredible. From the very beginning Andrea had great ideas that really helped our thoughts come together, The food alone gets an A+. We had a buffet and it was absolutely delish! The service provided to our guest was top notch. I would recommend BCC to every bride!!!

Attire: The Dress - {A+} Bridal Elegance - Loved them! They were very helpful & attentive even though I didn't make an appointment on my first time. Their staff was very honest and realistic when it came to finding the perfect gown for me. Being a plus sized bride they had such an incredible selection of plus size dresses it really helped me have the bridal experience that I was looking for! I ordered my gown, my maids dresses, my MOGS dress, as well as one for the rehearsal dinner and one for my honeymoon!! They also had the most & best discounts to take advantage of!! Who doesn't like to save $ especially when it comes the THE DRESS! or in my case THE DRESSES =)

The Suits - {D-} Mens Warehouse - We worked with Eric, at first he was very helpful in putting together the suits we had wanted with in our budget and still as jazzy as we had wanted. Once we got the suits ordered and paid for the customer service went from par to non existent. They were absolutely terrible when it came to keeping all of my fellas stuff in order, they were terrible with getting me info that I repeatedly asked for, they were charged for alts that they did not need (suspender buttons) others were forgotten when they needed them. One of the guys suits needed to be ordered again and it was a TOTALLY DIFFERENT COLOR then the other guys... I didn't find out til the day of.. which was awesome. BRIDES BEWARE!!! MENS WARE HOUSE = UNWANTED & UNNECESSARY STRESS!! go to Jos. Banks if you want to have good service!!! Or RENT!

Florist: {A+} Stems/Mulic Floral (same place ) Natalie there is absolutely amazing!!! I don't know if I can stress it enough!! She such a BEAUTIFUL JOB!!! Lots of ideas on how to reuse from the ceremony to the reception! We were going for jaw dropping and thats what we got, and within our budget!! SHE IS AWESOME!!!! CHECK HER OUT!!!

Photographer: Davyn Photograph {A+} They are a husband & wife team. They were so great. they had great ideas and listened to all mine. They took charge when needed and take some absolutely stunning photos if I do say so myself. Very reasonable in price & offer so many wonderful packages. Highly recommend them.

Officiant: Forever Together {A+} Gust B. He was great! Great at the initial meeting, sells a book with all kinds of great readings, vows, prayers,.... SO HELPFUL!! I would have been LOST. Also on the rehearsal dinner he mentioned he was also a singer. He ended up singing at the wedding and it was absolutely beautiful and a wonderful surprise for our guest!!
:
Baker/Cake Creator: { A- } Mary Briggs Cakes - The cake was good, but wasn't able to taste flavors,  just the white ( which was DELISH! Best white cake around!! ) Our cake was beautiful & everything we asked for!! She can be hard to get a hold of.. Great priced and has lots of options for other desserts (Sara b cookies were a HUGE HIT!!!!)

Linen/Decor: Special Occasions in Rockford MI {A+} The linens were the only thing that I firmly decided on. they were beautiful! ran into a snag because the company was not making them anymore & Penny was able to gather them from all over the country so we could still use them! They are a great company!!

DJ/Band: {A+} Rick Reuthers. We used their Jazz Trio & DJ. Both were INCREDIBLE!! We love live music, our guest were blown away!  They played all the our favs & our guest danced the night away.

Ceremony Music: Linda Missad {A+} She was great! Piano! Could play anything we wanted. She had lots of ideas depending on what we wanted. LOVED HER!! & coordinated with gust to sing the song last minute!! So accommodating!! Very reasonably Priced! PERFECT!

Invitations: Events by I Candy {A-} The mother & daughter were great with making our visions come to life. We had custom invites that were a huge hit. Ran into one snafu, but that was quickly fixed. We also had our programs & thank you notes printed from them. everything coordinated which was a something we wanted. We also rented our ceremony alter pieces. They have the most amazing studio to look around, they are very very customizable and work within every budget (rentals & stunning silk arrangements) GO SEE THEM!! SO cool!!!

Alterations: The Dresses {A+} Aubrey Price must have this little wand that she waves over our dresses because they were absolutely perfect! She also made my veil, headpiece, as well as special ones for my maids. She even made a  little dress for my little lady (dog) Lola. from all the leftovers of the maids dresses! SHE IS AWESOME! She is at Bridal Elegance, also the owner of AMP Designs! She is GREAT, & very reasonable!!!

Transportation: Executive Coach - {A} Perfect for what we needed. Very timely and accommodating.

Hair & Makeup for all the bridal party - A Chroma Salon {A+} Tara Jo did an absolutely wonderful job! I'm very picky about my hair, and she stayed very calm & relaxed for all my craziness. She Also came to the reception to put my hair up (it was down) and touch up my makeup! She was a lifesaver. I could not have imagined my wedding day without her! A Chroma Salon had mimosas & fruit for us in the morning and had the salon closed for our party. They come highly recommended from me as well as my bridal party!

Jewelry: My Ring - Pressures Jewelers - {A+} LOVE IT. it was custom, they did a beautiful job. Something for all budgets!!

HIS: Fred Meyer @ Woodland Mall - GO THERE & ASK FOR JOSH!! He was so helpful with picking out a ring for my fella, he was attentive to me and my budget. He had great ideas for customizing his ring and my fella loves it!! We will be life long customers of his. THANKS JOSH!!

My wedding day was the best day of my life so far & its because of all of these people above!

My wedding was in Ludington, Michigan

Knottie Screen Name: Imperatigirl
Wedding Month / Year: September 2010

Ceremony Venue: Beach in Ludington Michigan

Reception Venue: Cartier Mansion (www.cartiermansion.com)
If I could do it again I would NOT have had my wedding here

If you’re looking for a nice bed and breakfast, look no further. This place is comfortable and clean and has amazing food. The proprietor’s son, Drew, is a fantastic chef and the historic mansion is a lovely place to stay.

If you’re a pending bride, about to trust your special day to someone, read on:

I cannot even BEGIN to express how much additional stress having our wedding here caused me. I thought it would be stressful to plan an out-of-state wedding and having someone to do some organizing seemed like it would alleviate some of that stress. Not the case.

We visited the Cartier Mansion in January of 2010 to tour the facility and speak with the owners, Sue Ann and Gary Schnitker. I had done some research on the wedding industry in general and knew the importance of having a detailed and very specific contract. The fees that were due up front to secure our date included renting the mansion and garden for the day, renting a tent to be set up in the parking lot for the reception and also paying a wedding fee. Upon paying for these things our date was secured and if we canceled up until 2 weeks prior to the date we would lose $1000 of the total.

We also discussed prices for things that would be totaled once we had a final guest count. We established a price per guest for dinner, prices per drink, prices for the renting of tables, chairs and linens. I expressed an interest in arranging my own baker for my cake (I wanted cupcakes) but was dissuaded from doing so by Sue Ann when she guaranteed a specific price through a bakery she had a relationship with. This too, was put in writing in our original contract. Centerpiece flowers were included in the wedding fee, and we agreed that I would pay an extra fee for a few more hydrangea stems to make my own bouquets. I also expressed concern about rain or cold temperatures. Would our guests be comfortable under a tent? I was told that the tents come with removable sides (and was never told there was an additional charge for this or that they had to be ordered separately).

After hammering out a very detailed and specific contract with them 8 months prior to the wedding we were confident that the remainder of our budget would be going toward food and alcohol.

We made one more trip to Ludington to obtain our marriage license 3 weeks prior to our September wedding. We met with Sue Ann again and discussed the final guest count, and some details of our beach ceremony. There was no mention of any extra charges during this face-to-face meeting. Sue Ann told us she would email me the final invoice. We were expecting the only changes to be the price for food based on our final guest count. Alcohol prices would be determined at the end of the reception. To our surprise the updated invoice that was sent a few days later included a $200 increase on the tent, a $75 charge to plug our ipods into their PA system, and the price of our cupcakes had nearly doubled. When I responded in an email questioning some of these charges I received a curt email back from Sue Ann that ended with her saying she ‘no longer wished to be responsible’ for obtaining the flowers for my bouquets as planned. This not only sent me scrambling to find a florist with only a little over 2 weeks till the wedding but also significantly shook my confidence in the professionalism of the Mansion. We felt on the hook to pay these additional and inflated charges (due 2 weeks prior to the event) fearing if we didn’t our wedding would be further compromised.

We selected a location for the ceremony on the beach along Lake Michigan (a few miles from the Cartier Mansion). It meant a lot to us to have our ceremony on the beach because that is where the two of us first met 14 years prior. Due to the high winds the day before we had to rehearse our ceremony inside the mansion. On morning of our wedding day it was also a bit windy and cool, but because it was so important to us to have our ceremony on the beach we all agreed to make the call on the weather closer to the actual time of the ceremony (4pm). In the 4 hours leading up to our wedding we couldn’t find or get hold of anyone working at or for the Cartier Mansion. My fiancé and I tried the main number and also Gary and Sue Ann’s cell phones and could not reach anyone. The weather was reasonable and we wanted to have our ceremony on the beach as planned. After failed attempts to reach Sue Ann and Gary, I finally reached their son Drew, who made sure I’d have chairs on the beach in place for my ceremony as originally planned. Amidst all of this chaos I had to clean up my room and make my own bed before the photographer arrived because, after leaving a message to have our room cleaned before the his 3pm arrival, no one responded.

I didn’t know what to expect when I finally arrived with my father at the ceremony site. I had no idea if everyone would simply be standing around, or if the need for chairs had been successfully communicated. Luckily we have a tight group of friends and my fiancé had managed to let everyone know to come to the beach. I later found out that some people had called the mansion and were told that our wedding would not be on the beach. The general lack of communication was flagrant.

In the end it was a blessing in disguise that the weather was cool, and Sue Ann had been unable to rent sides for the tent at the last minute. We were lucky to be able to have our reception in the lovely carriage house, a building behind the mansion that, I believe was built the same time as the Mansion. It has a beautiful interior, nice windows and a floor made for dancing but is not an option in warmer weather due to a lack of air conditioning. The tent we paid $400 to rent was nothing but a fabric roof on poles, pitched above an uneven cement driveway, not much of a place to dance or have a fun reception. Having the reception in the carriage house was also nice because otherwise we would have been spending all that money to rent the mansion only to have the majority of our reception in its parking lot.

More questionable practices ensued when Sue Ann and Gary acted as bartenders during our reception and had the nerve to set out a tip jar for our guests knowing full well that they would be charging us an 18% gratuity on the alcohol sales at the end of the evening.

The icing on the cake (pardon the pun) was Sue Ann literally screaming at us in front my husband’s family the next day when we quietly asked to be refunded the extra fees for the tent, cupcakes and sound system. Gary also added that we were never charged for the beach chairs when having chairs at the beach was spelled out in our rental agreement and we had been charged to rent 67 chairs that were, apparently, only for the reception. I was told that I am the ‘most difficult, nit-pickiest bride she’s ever dealt with in 30 weddings’. I find that hard to believe when I was only expecting the good business practice of honoring a contract. The mere fact that someone working in the hospitality industry would scream in my face in front of my family left me reeling. In the end, Sue Ann wrote us a check for the amount in dispute, and then berated us further for being in her house past 'check out', even though we had to wait for her to show up to even discuss our final bill.

The sad thing is that after being paid over $10,000.00 by us (rehearsal dinner, wedding and rental of all 6 rooms for 2 nights) an argument over a few hundred dollars left us with a horrible impression of the Cartier Mansion. We make trips to Ludington every year, and would probably have made an anniversary stay at the Cartier mansion a part of our itinerary had we been treated differently.

Attire (Dress/Tux Shop): Nordstrom.com!

After my first trip to David's Bridal, I wasn't into the whole idea of going dress shoppping, so I ordered several dresses on Nordstrom.com! I found the PERFECT dress for only $178 and returned the rest to my local Nordstroms. It was nice being able to privately try on gowns in front of my parents without any high pressure sales people. Also, don't give your email to David's Bridal or you will be stalked with several emails a day until the day of your wedding!!

Florist: Bela Floral, Ludington Michigan (www. Belafloral.com)
Rick at Bela Floral sold me flowers to make my own bouquets and was very nice and helpful. He even let me borrow the large container they were in to make sure they stayed fresh. I recommend him highly!  Great prices too! He even gave me an extra hydrangea stem for free!

Photographer: Darrell Adkins, Remus Michigan (www.darrelladkins.com)
Darrell did an amazing job with our wedding photos. I was crying during the entire ceremony and he somehow managed to capture great photos of me despite my tears and the winds of a blustery day on the beach. His portraits on the beach were breathtaking. He was unobtrusive throughout the ceremony and reception (no one even realized he was there) yet managed to capture so many special moments that I will treasure for a lifetime. I made a lot of things for my wedding (boutonnieres, programs, favors, centerpieces, etc) and he captured every single detail perfectly. Using Darrell was a little expensive, and I might not be able to afford getting an album from him (although I am saving up!), but I still am so pleased with my decision to use him!

Officiant: Tom F Hamel, Pentwater, Michigan (www.mywestmichiganwedding.com)
I loved Tom Hamel! He was so nice and accommodating. We had a beach ceremony and it was a little hard to hear him. He didn't think we'd need a microphone because we only had 60 guests, but we definitely did. He rented us a lovely beach trellis that made the photos even better! I highly recommend him!

Baker/Cake Creator: Happy Endings, Muskegon Michigan (www.happyendingsbakery.com)

Autumn at Happy Endings did an amazing job on our wedding cupcakes and top cake. They were delicious and she was able to incorporate my design (I had a bird-themed wedding). I was really impressed with her work!

DJ/Band: I used an ipod and I HIGHLY recommend it! I spent some time deciding the order of the songs (more dancy stuff at the end) and also had it plugged in to ensure battery power. I timed out the music based on time allotted for my reception and it worked perfectly! My guests said it was the best wedding music they're ever danced to and no cheesy DJ songs were played!

Ceremony Music:
I used an Ipod for this as well.

Hair: Generations Hair Salon in Scottsvile Michigan (231-757-0350)
Thank you to Kim Ingle and Generations in Scotsville for making my hair beautiful for my wedding! I was only in town for a couple days to obtain my marriage license prior to my wedding (we live in Chicago) and the first (and only) hair test I had scheduled at another salon was an absolute disaster. I wanted a messy braided up-do that would hold up on a beach ceremony (windy) and throughout the rest of the day/evening. Kim not only got me in at the last minute (literally saw me within 30 minutes of my call) for a test, but executed the same style beautifully on my wedding day. She also bent over backwards to accommodate me. She had an important out-of-town family event on the day of my wedding, but made a special trip just to do my hair for me, and also had her father run to her house and cut me some lovely hydrangea stems (for free!) from her backyard just in case we needed any extra flowers for our reception. Who does that!? I'm so impressed with Kim and cannot wait to send her a thank you card with some photos of our special day. My hair looked fantastic andand even held up to the winds on the beach that day! Amazing!

Instead of recommended who you SHOULD go with, I hope you learn from my mistakes and learn who NOT to go with...
First of all - PHOTOGRAPHERS - Do NOT select Beautiful Wedding Photography.  The photographers are very pleasant in person but when it comes down to it, communication with them is like pulling teeth.  It takes days to weeks to respond to an email or phone call.  It takes 8+ weeks to get your photo's online and all they do to "tweek" the photo's is copy pictures and turn them black and white.  I had a bad feeling from the start but dreams ruled my instinct at that time.
MUSICIAN - Do NOT have James Hilary, classical guitarist, play at your venue.  He played beautifully at the bridal expo I attended but when I walked down the aisle, to a song he swore he had played on numerous occasions, every step I took I was cringing at his off time, out-of-tune guitar.  Terrible!
DRESS - Please, above all else, DO NOT and I repeat, DO NOT get your dress from Bridal Elegance.  Horrendous service and bad attitudes go a long way.  We paid over $2000 in dresses for my bridal gown and 4 bridesmaids but the manager cancelled my entire order, 5 months before my wedding, because I complained about a sales associate.
My venue (Above and Beyond in Muskegon) was gorgeous.  My flowers (Flowers by Ray & Sharon/Sams Club bulk floral) were absolutely beautiful!

Place: Grand Volute Ballroom Lowell Mi-beautiful staircase that makes a great entrance for the Bride.  Plus, the Bride is facing the guests upon entrance, therefore pictures are better. Kent and MaryEllen are top notch. They are the coordinators there and are a huge help with recommendations for the wedding and worked with vendors to give us a better price. Their rapport with other vendors really paid off for us! www.grandvolute.com

Caterer: Grand Volute: they had a great meal for us. Ice Sculpture was beautiful also.
Officiant: www.weddingceremonyvows.net
Ken Kibby I Now Pronunce You Wedding. He was perfect. We interviewed a few, but he was highly recommended with reviews on Google. His experience and professionallism--along with price, made him the only choice. (some Officiants were not close to professional)
He dressed to match our colors with his shirt, tie, suit,  gave us the ceremony to review beforehand, allowed us to switch to sand ceremony from unity candle last minute and was awesome.
Grand Volute recommended him because he always has great reviews from those he marrys--I can see why. His voice is perfect for doing weddings and he really put us at ease throughout the ceremony. He will help with the coordination of the Processional, Wedding March, Recessional--which was a relief for us because we needed help with choregraphy and he took charge.

Flowers: Gail VanderLaan www.gvlfloral.com -Gorgeous flowers and decorations. She did a fabulous job for us.

Photography: Modern Photography; Brandon . www.modernphotographics.com  He was so much fun to work with . Our pictures were awesome!! He truly captured our personalities in the photos. Plus, it was nice to have the Photographer, Place coordinator, Officiant and Caterer all know each other --they work awesome together.

Dress: Renee Austin Wedding www.reneeaustinswedding.com Maggie was great! She helped to find the perfect dress for us. Located on Bridge in Grand Rapids , she had a great room with a ton of mirrors for our group to have a wonderful time viewing many styles!

We found them out of the West Michigan Wedding Assoc. I recommend using these vendors. Our wedding was Awesome!

I LOVED my photographer.  Her name is Laurel Peacock and you can find her at http://livelaughlovephotos.wordpress.com Her pricing is very reasonable, and she really works with you to get you the pictures you want for the day.  I was a very hands on bride, so I liked being able to say what pictures I wanted taken where.  She will make you prints, but you get the best pricing if you have her put the edited pictures on a disk.  You get all the copyright to the photos, to share as you see fit.  She doesn't make your guests and family get their prints through her

I had my wedding at the Michillinda Lodge in Whitehall, MI on their beach front bluff overlooking lake MI, you couldn't have asked for a more beautiful setting.  The staff was amazing friendly and helpful, and the liqour flowed all night long.  The food here is also AMAZING and the pricing for bar and food is unlimited per person so you don't have any surprising bar tabs at the end of the night.

Chalet Floral in Muskegon, did an AMAZING job with the flowers.  Jaime, was completely on top of things, the setup was seamless, and i didn't have to worry about a thing the day of.

Rykes Bakery in Muskegon also did a fabulous job on my cake.  It was absolutely gorgeous!  And again, I didn't have to worry about anything the day of.  She came, set up and was gone before the reception started.

Do NOT book Encore DJ's.  That was the only thing that went wrong with the whole wedding.  The DJ actually threatened to LEAVE before the reception started.  Once we convinced him to stay, he announced us, but got my name wrong.  Nothing like being announced for the first time with the incorrect name.

Good luck planning!

Ceremony Venue: A We had our ceremony at our church, Lighthouse Community in Allendale.  Everything was set up perfectly and went great!

Reception Venue: A Our reception was at the Holland Fish and Game Club.  We rented the South Hall.  It was very clean and a great facility.  We were able to take pictures around the grounds which was a huge plus.  There was plenty of room for our 160 guests, plus a dance floor.

Bridal Dress Shop: I bought my dress at Cutlerville Bridal.  She had an excellent selection of dresses and my perfect dress was the first one I tried on there!  The ladies there were so helpful and allowed me to try on multiple dresses before making a final decision.

Tux Shop: We ordered our tuxes through Anything Sews in Allendale.  Overall, we were happy with the tuxes.  We did have a glitch with 1 tux being way too big, but she contacted the tux company and they had it delivered in the correct size the next day.

Bridesmaid Dresses: We had the bridesmaid dresses made at Anything Sews.  I was happy with the style of the dresses (I was able to design them myself) and they were well made.  However, we received the dresses the Friday before my wedding, which was cutting it way too close to me.

Florist: I purchased silk flowers from Michael's and my mom's friend helped me arrange the bouquets.

Photographer: A+  Marc Photography was our photographer.  We ended up having 3 people taking pictures as they brought along an associate photographer.  They did a great job making sure they took all the pictures we requested.  They were really accomodating with getting everyone arranged and where they needed to be for pictures, especially the kids!  We are so happy with our preview!

Caterer: Carole's Catering catered our wedding.  We opted for a buffet and the food was fantastic.  Her wait-staff was efficient and helpful.  Our guests commented on how good the food was and how well everything went.

Baker/Cake Creator: A+  Marilyn VanderWilp (a lady from my church who makes wedding cakes) did our cake for us.  She talked me out of the cake I originally wanted (which was a good thing) and thrilled me with a beautiful cake on pedestals.  It was delicious and looked beautiful!

Linen/Decor:  I purchased all my own decorations and planned how it would look.  Some of my bridesmaids and I decorated the church and my mom and some of her friends decorated the reception hall.

DJ/Band: A+  Cameron B. Kuiper Productions DJ'd our wedding.  He is a full-service DJ and will do as much or as little as you want.  He introduced our bridal party, helped coordinate an ice-breaker, allowed our guests to request songs, and kept the dance floor full.  He did a great job!

Invitations: A  Grand Valley Printing printed our invitations.  I purchased the cards from Hobby Lobby and had them printed.  He also printed our programs and thank you cards.  They all turned out great.

Hair: A+  Amy Scherhorn (of Amy's Hair in Zeeland) did my hair and my bridesmaid's.  She did an incredible job for everyone.

Honeymoon: A+  We went to Sandals Whitehouse in Jamaica.  It was incredible!  Everything went so well, we didn't have any issues, and we had a wonderful vacation!

In response to negative feedback on Cartier Mansion:

I have to disagree with PP on the Cartier Mansion.  There are two sides to every story and I don't believe all of the facts are being shared.

You have to expect to pay more when you want fondont covered cupcakes with individual birds on them in place of regular butter cream frosted ones.

$75 for the use of their PA system is cheap... imagine what a DJ would have been.  I look at this like a cake cutting fee.  If you want to hold your event at a venue with a fee lke that... you pay it.

As for the room cleaning, the house keeper is probably in her 60s and this is a family run place (it's not a Holiday Inn where the house keepers are knocking on your door at 7am).  If she wanted her room cleaned before the photog came, she should have asked and I'm sure it would have been done.

Also, I didn't rent a tent but looked into it and knew the sides were extra if you wanted them.  $400 is VERY reasonable for a tent in that area... I was looking at a much higher price.

I don't think you should rule out the Mansion if that is the kind of wedding you are looking for.  Just be reasonable and remember that it is a family run place and also Sue Ann and Gary's home.  My only suggestion - keep it intimate!  But I WOULD recommend them!

Officiant: Marion Koleski Battle Creek, Mi...super laid back and nice yet profressional. http://sites.google.com/site/revmarionkoleski/home

Knottie Screen Name: AmandaSwisher1
Wedding Date: October 23 Kalamazoo, MI

First Presbyterian Church – Ceremony Location
              Grade A+

This is the church we attend so when it came time to pick a venue for the ceremony, it was either here or someplace outside. Since I’m a control freak, I decided I couldn’t handle the added stress of bad weather (good decision on my part since it happened to rain on our wedding day). They have a wedding coordinator that helps walk you through everything. Her name is Sharon and she’s super helpful and super responsive to questions.  The church itself is stunning so that’s a big bonus. I did very little decorating and I received tons of compliments on how amazing it was.

Here was the only issue we had. They had an interim pastor when we put our deposit down. They found a new permanent pastor 4 months out from the wedding. Before even meeting us, the new pastor said he wouldn’t marry us without giving us any reason other than he didn’t think 4 months was enough time to do the counseling he wanted to do. Mind you we’re 30 and 38 years old, not 18. The previous pastor had told us only 3 meetings were required with him, no counseling. It ended up working out since they asked one of the retired pastors to marry us (who only met with us 3 times) and we really enjoyed him. I don’t think we’ll be going back to church here because of the way the new pastor handled our situation however.

Rose Street Market – Reception Hall and Catering          Grade A

The food and service were both wonderful. Linda, the co-owner is the person you deal with throughout the entire process. They do so many weddings here that they have it down to a science. They help you plan everything out to make sure you get exactly what you want. My only complaint is that Linda gets so busy she isn’t super punctual in returning emails right away but she always gets to it eventually. They also don’t have a liquor license so you have to purchase your own through one of their verified vendors. This was a plus for us since we were then charged on consumption, not per head.  The hall comes decorated and it’s very pretty without anything additional.  Everything went so smoothly the day of the wedding, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

Tiffany’s Wine and Spirits – Alcohol               Grade B

My parents are part of the half case of wine a month club so we didn’t shop around when it came time to pick from Rose Street’s list of approved vendors. Saad the owner is very knowledgeable but can be a little unresponsive. He also planned on sending us more than double the alcohol we needed for the reception until Rose Street noticed the mistake. They do take “returns” on any unopened bottles leftover at the end of the night. I say “returns” because they don’t actually charge you until the day of the wedding after they know how much has been consumed.

Wedel’s Nursery, Florist and Garden Center – Flowers          Grade B

Flowers were one of the things I thought I didn’t have to stress about. I met with Bonnie, the floral contact, numerous times to make sure we both had exact the same thing in mind. For the most part, I was very happy with things however there were a few details I would change if I could go back. All of the bouquets had ribbon wrapped around the stems as I requested. Maybe I wasn’t specific enough but I wish the stems had been wrapped further down. As it was, only about 2 inches of the 10 inch stems was wrapped.  Secondly, the roses in the centerpieces should’ve been blown open. In the end though I was happy with the result and definitely happy I didn’t have to deal with doing them myself.

Powermix Productions – DJ                            Grade A

I wasn’t really sure where to start with my DJ hunt so I picked Powermix purely based on Rose Street’s recommendation.  They almost exclusively use Justin Katz and I have nothing but good things to say about him. We had an older crowd so the dance floor was pretty empty most of the night but he got the few young people dancing, even me and I hate to dance. He came to talk to me several points during the evening to make sure I was happy with everything going on. He also acted as our emcee and did a wonderful job. Powermix itself is under new ownership and there are some kinks to work out there but overall things went smoothly.

David’s Bridal Kalamazoo – Dress and alterations           Grade A

While I wasn’t wowed by David’s Bridal I don’t have any negative things to say either.  The girls were all very helpful when I came in each time. I also showed up without an appointment one day to try on a short dress I bought for the rehearsal and they fit me right in without a problem. My bustle was very complicated but looked amazing and Natasha did a wonderful job with it.

Libin’s Formalwear – Tuxes                           Grade A

My groom is all about going to stores that are locally owned so he was happy to be able to get away from the “Men’s Wearhouse” type shop and come here. They ordered his tux the day he picked it out so he could try it on and make sure it fit right. He’s a standard 40 Regular so he shouldn’t have had a problem but for whatever reason, the size they sent didn’t fit. The clerk was able to adjust the sizes of everything so that the tux that came in the week of the wedding fit like a glove. They also have on site alterations so they can tack removable stitches into the tux to make it fit right if needed.

House of Brides Chicago – Bridesmaid dresses            Grade C

My girls picked out the dress they wanted to wear and I saw it was available here. I work in Chicago so coming here wasn’t inconvenient for me and I didn’t like the idea of ordering online. I called and found out they had a sample of the dress and showed up with one of my girls to do a quick try on.  They wouldn’t let us in (they have to buzz you into the building). We followed in behind another woman who had an appointment and after some attitude by the front desk girl, my Maid of Honor talked her way into getting a fitting room to try on the dress. 10 minutes later we ordered it. Vanessa, the consultant who worked us in, was very nice and very responsive. My other girls all had to send in their measurements since they’re out of state and Vanessa made sure they looked proportionate.

I wouldn’t go back here again. Vanessa is no longer there and I haven’t found anyone who isn’t a total b!tch. I had to get measured for a dress for one of my bridesmaid’s upcoming wedding and they wouldn’t do it even after I reminded them that I’d spent over $1000 in dresses there for my bridesmaids.

Gallagher’s Eatery and Pub – Rehearsal Dinner          Grade B

We had our rehearsal dinner in one of their private rooms. The food was good and service was decent. They didn’t move the individual tables in to two long banquet style table liked I asked but a few of my guy friends made quick work of that. There isn’t a charge for the room just a food/drink minimum that we met easily so I think it was a good deal based on what we got.

Continental Pastries – Cake                        Grade A

Our cake was beautiful and the groom’s cake (a Mastercraft speed boat) came out great. Everything was delicious and the planning process was easy. I did a tasting and ordered that day.

IDUN spa and salon – Hair & nails                 Grade A+

We had manicures and pedicures the day before the wedding and hair done at the salon the day of. The girls all seemed very pleased and I was thrilled. I had a trial done so I knew things would go smoothly but it was great. Ashley is amazing and everyone is super nice.

Judson Miller Photography                               Grade A

Jud is a wondeful photographer still working on building a reputation for weddings. We were somewhat unsure of what to expect because he doesn’t have tons of experience but we were ecstatic with the results. He spent all day with us and got tons of amazing shots. He has a great eye and loves what he does. I’d definitely recommend him to anyone looking for engagement, wedding, or portrait type photos.
