Cupcakes

Question for y'all:

We would like to have cupcakes instead of a traditional cake -- there is an awesome bakery near our house and it will be both cheaper and allow guests more choice since we can get a bunch of different delicious cupcake flavors.

But -- to satisfy our own traditional side and our more traditional family, we'd like to have a small 1-tier cake as well.

My question is, how would this work with the cake cutting and saving the top tier (since we'd only have one)?  We'd probably get a smaller cake that wouldn't feed all guests because of the cupcakes.  Would we still cut the cake, or cut a cupcake?  Would we save the whole cake and not cut it at all, or save a cupcake each?  What might you think as a guest of these different options?  I feel as though it might come across as rude to have a cake tier without cutting it at all, or saving it for ourselves!

Does anyone who has done this or seen it done have any suggestions for how we might manage this?

Thanks for your help!!

Re: Cupcakes

  • Personally, I would do a sheet cake which is cheaper (for those that want cake) and cut the one tier.  No one has to see the sheet cake.   How many guests are you talking about?
  • I would only offer your guests the cupcake and save another entire tier for your anniversary and as far as "cutting the cake" I would just have that part be you two feeding each other the first bite of your cupcakes :)

You can get a small cake for cutting and still serve cupcakes to all your guests.  Or you can cut a cupcake and feed it to each other.

As far as saving cake for your anniversary, year old frozen cake reaisn't going to taste very good, and it takes up a lot of room in your freezer.  For a year.  Why not just buy another cake or cupcake from the same baker for your anniversary.

<div>It's not JUST about doing things cheaper -- we also just like the idea of cupcakes (it's self-contained so no mess or worry about cutting the cake, we can get a bunch of different varieties, and we can get mini-cupcakes as well so we have 2 different sizes) and have a specific cupcake shop we want to use :)</div>
  • The bakery we are tasting with tomorrow offers cupcakes as well. You might ask what they can do to combine a cake/cupcakes. I have seen non-wedding cakes with such arrangements, and bet they would be willing to work with you to develop or carry out an idea.

We did this exactly.  Our reception was to be outside, so we opted for a small two-tier cake to only be on display, ceremoniously cut, and disposed of.  Then we had cupcakes brought out.  We did this for a few reasons.  1. We didn't want bugs getting on the cake while it sat outside.  2.  We liked the idea of having a variety of cake flavor choices with the cupcakes and 3. Our venue charged a $2 per person cake cutting fee.  Each cupcake wasn't even $2.  So it was a no brainer.  However, weather forced us to move inside so the cupcakes were just on display the whole time.  We still only cut the cake and it was not served to guests.  I told the venue staff they could eat it (I've worked at a lot of weddings....always a bonus!!)

Our bakery will provide a complimentary cake on our one year anny, but you could easily cut into either the bottom or top tier of the cake and have the venue staff save the other tier.  Here's us cutting the cake with the cupcakes displayed.

ETA: I re-read your post OP and saw you were considering a one-tiered cake.  Ask your bakery if the anniverary cake is complimentary.  Or, consider a small two-tier and save the top as i mentioned.

  • We are having the same dilemma as you. We are only doing cupcakes and my parents think we need a small cake to cut into, but then what would we do with this cake that maybe serves 6-8 people? So we decided to just feed each other a cupcakes to satisfy this tradition! Maybe if you can convince your family to do this, it might work!

Also a really good idea.  I agree with PP that the cake might not be good a year later.  Unless perhaps you have a deep freeze.

Having a small cake will look very nice displayed, and your parents will be happy.  I would consider it -- cutting the cake was kind of fun and a cake of that size would be inexpensive.  You don't have to do anything with it.  Toss it or give it to the wait/kitchen staff to enjoy as a thank you.

Take a look at the link PP posted above of cupcake tiers with small cake on top.

  • We're having mini cupcakes and a 6" top tier to cut (fi REALLY wants to cut the cake, or we'd just skip it). We'll serve the cake to guests and get a new cake for our anniversary. Our bakery gives a free 6" for the first anniversary too, but even if they didn't we wouldn't freeze any. I saved the top tier from my first wedding and could NOT bring myself to try it, even though exH said it was great. Year-old cake just eeks me out I guess! If you do want to freeze some, just wrap super duper well, and I don't see why you couldn't freeze a couple of cupcakes if you wanted!

  • We're doing cupcakes for the guests and I'm also making a 10" layer cake for us to cut. Part of the reason for this is because I'm vegan and vegan cakes cost a small fortune; I can make the simple layer cake I want for less than $20! I wanted us to have something to cut into but didn't want to have some huge cake, especially when a simple vegan cake costs so much! And I didn't see the point of cutting something I can't eat...

  • A lot of people only save a slice of cake for their 1 year.  You could do that.

  • Totally agree with Stage Manager.

If you get good quality cake and you, or someone else, wraps it appropriately, the cake is delicious one year later.

We actually were gone on our 1 year anni, and took the cake out to share at a dinner party with parents.  And that was 14 months after our wedding.  And it was fabulous.

We had cupcakes, we just cut a cupcake. It was actually fun. Our baker provides half a dozen cupcakes for out 1 year anniversary for free, so I didn't care about freezing anything. Maybe your bakery would offer to do something similar.

That's what we did...our top tier was way too big to keep in the freezer for a year (teeny freezer...can't wait to get a house with a big ole fridge!).  I cut the cake into slices, saved 2 for our first anniversary, and then we ate a slice a night until our honeymoon a week later.

I really like the idea of feeding each other cupcakes - that would provide for mega-cute pictures and you can each choose your own flavor (maybe you have different cake tastes, I don't know).

    Enjoy!
  • We are doing cupcakes for the guests on a Cupcake tower (looks almost like a wedding cake). I love the cupcakes for the same reason as you. We have 6 different flavors. I then will have a 2 tier cake on the top. 8 inch, then 6 inch. so that we can cut into the 8inch, and save the 6 inch tier.

  • can anyone help make them? My aunts did mine for the shower and they turned out great!
A wedding is a party, not a performance. If at the end of the day you are married to the one you love, then everything went perfectly.
