We are planning our ceremony for 2pm.  We want to do family photos, then do our strip tour so that we can get some pics during the day, and some right as it gets dark and all of the lights come on... Most of the restaurants we have looked at don't start dinner service until 5pm, which works perfect for us...But what about our guests?  Is 3 hours too much time between the ceremony and dinner?

If we do find a place to eat right after the ceremony, we won't be able to start the strip tour until dark [I checked the sunrise/sunsets for November, the sun sets around 4:30]

I wouldn't worry about it. You could plan a double decker bus tour if you are really worried about it but its Vegas and they can find something to do.  You could also include a list of things in the area of the ceremony/reception so they have ideas too.

But make sure you communicate the times so that your guests know there won't be food until 5 so they can plan their meals accordingly.

Normally a three-hour gap would be a little annoying, but it's Vegas. :) As long as they know dinner isn't until 5:00, they can plan a little nap/gambling/snack time before the reception.

How formal is your ceremony, what time of year and where is it being held?

The reason I ask is because unless it's been explicitly stated that it's going to be a casual wedding, I always wear a suit.  If I'm wearing a suit in Vegas and have a formal activity to attend later, like a dinner, reception, etc., I'm going to want to avoid the outside if it's summer, the casino because it's smokey and I hate going to dinner and smelling smoke coming from my clothes, I probably won't want to walk around a mall, so on and so forth.  You get the idea.  Most of the things I'd normally to do keep myself occupied for three hours I might not want to do based on how I'm dressed.  I'd go back to my room to change and then hit the craps table but three hours isn't quite enough time to go back to the resort or room, change, back to casino to gamble, back to room and change, get to the reception.

If any of that is the case, I'd prefer to have some planned activity so I can hang out with others attending the wedding and reception.

We had the same times for our ceremony and dinner... it worked out great!  But, my ceremony and reception venue were quite a ways from one another...

As it worked out, our ceremony venue was running a little late so it was about 3:00 p.m. when we got back to the hotel with everyone.  Our guests had a bit of a breather before the limo was to pick them up and take them to the venue.  People generally used the time to freshen up a little.  Then they got to the venue around 4:30 and the restaurant served them drinks while we came in a few minutes past 5:00 and dinner began.

If you do do this... I'd make your grand entrance right at 5:00 when dinner is to be served, instead of having your guests get there at 5:00 and then have to wait for you two to arrive before getting started.  But if both venues are in the same place or really close, it may not be a good idea to have them separated that much...

I agree with PP - where are your ceremony/reception taking place?  3 hours sounds like a long break to me.

We're doing about 1.5 hours in between... just enough time for the double decker bus to tool around the strip and get everyone to the restaurant.

As a guest I would be bothered by having to find something to do for 3 hours... to then run over to your reception.  I mean like VegasGroom said it's not long enough to really do anything but long enough to be PIA.  Just my two cents..

We're getting married November 11 at Imperial Palace, and I still haven't settled on a place for the reception. It's not going to be super formal, but even then some people will probably still dress up. Thank you all for your feedback :). It seems as though I better find an activity to keep everyone entertained, or maybe have a lunch reception.

After reading the responses I thought more about it and realized I'd probably be a little annoyed with such a long gap in between if I was a guest at someone else's wedding.. I also didn't factor in the idea that some of my guests would probably end up drunk before dinner!

We're considering a lunch reception now, possibly with an informal dinner that night so people can hang out and have some drinks if they choose to attend.

Thanks everyone :). I definitely appreciate the help!!

That sounds like a good idea..or you could invite everyone to your suite later in the evening and serve Hors D'Oeuvres and drinks.

A lunch reception with an after-party sounds like a great idea. A couple of my friends did that, and now they have really fun pictures of everyone bowling in their wedding clothes. :)

Plus, you can often save money by having a lunch reception.
