Think about having the reception in a restaurant (ceremony in a local park or church....though some churches ask for large "donations"). Look into a Sunday brunch or Saturday lunch. Keep the WP small as well as the guest list. You'll need to be creative but it is quite possible.

It really depends on the number of people you're inviting. If it's small (50 people or less) and you are OK with a daytime event, it might just be do-able. Like Cinderella30 said, going with a restaurant is your best bet because there's usually no separate venue fee.
But once you're around 75 people or more, and if you want an evening reception with alcohol, I don't think it can be done in the city for less than $12,000-15,000, unless you start making some cuts that are really going to hurt -- like having cash bar only, not serving a full meal, etc. We're having an 80 person reception with a full buffet in a Tribeca restaurant on a Friday evening and it'll be about $12K for the venue, food, and drink, including tax and tip. That's the LOWEST we found of all our venue choices.

Totally doable, but you might have to give up some pre-conceived notions of what your wedding is going to be. For example, you just can't do a 150 person Bridgewaters wedding. BUT - can throw an amazing, meaningful, fun party.
First, sit down with your fiance and discuss what is really important to you guys. Is it the booze? The food? The venue? Budget stuff around that.
Like casyme and cinderella said - a restaurant is totally affordable. You don't have to worry about the venue fee, the linens, or any of that additional crap that just blows your money away. The important thing is that you're marrying your best friend! Yay!
Now think of who you want MOST to be there. Don't worry about that girl that invited you to hers that you no longer speak to. AuntTilly will get over it. And your boss doesn't need to be there. (Unless s/he's a good pal) The guest list, I think, is pivotal. The less people you invite, the better party you can throw. You know?
Good luck!

I do think so. Im planning on a 70pp and my budget is 5K not including rings. So far we have been able to do it, we are planning a Friday night ceremony/reception and we are doing a lot of DIY projects, like favors, bouquets and I would like to do an aisle runner. It all depends on what you want, we find a great venue for a decent price that includes simple floral centerpieces and the cake, also alcohol is included. For us this was the best approach to save money. If you want some info PM me. My venue is in queens. Good Luck!

thanks.. yea, i think the restaurant would be ideal for budget weddings but would we be able to have a dance floor? Most restaurants don't have enough space for that though... thank you for the ideas though, greatly appreciated.
If any of you know of any open indoor space, loft, studios etc. that has a reasonable rental price, then please let me know. I was thinking something like that, then just decorate it myself. Maybe that would help the budget.
