Has anyone donated plasma for money?

What was it like?

I have donated before, but never for money.  My good childhood friend had cancer and we donated plasma to help her.  It is a little bit of a process, you will feel tired afterwards.  But the benefits are so rewarding.

Hospitals are always looking for plasma.  If they are willing to pay for it, that's even better I guess.

I haven't but I've heard it could be a little painful.

I haven't but a lot of the people I knew in college did.  I think it's got to be worse than giving blood, just because they pay for plasma and not for blood.

I think I remember reading years ago about health risks associated with plasma donation, so you may want to look into that too.

my roommate freshman year in college did...a lot!  haha  she would get really sick and sometimes her arm would be all swollen from where they took it from.  basically they pull out a whole bunch of stuff then take out the plasma and put whatever back in (i know...real technical!)...but it takes hours as opposed to a short time for blood.

it was pretty painful and she would come back and sleep for hours afterwards!  i agree with it if you are doing it for a cause...but if it just for money...i do not.  as mary mentioned, there are many health risks if you do it often...i would definitely look into it - it MUCH more involved than giving blood.

It's really not that bad.  I did it for a while (i.e. over a year, and I know a few ppl who have done it for several years) as a way to bring in extra money (at least a couple hundred a month, usually close to $300).  Depending on  your weight depends on how long it takes.  If you weigh under 150 it taks about 30 minutes and with check-in and stuff, I was usually in and out in  45 minutes.  It didn't hurt at all and it was actually nice quiet time for myself to catch up on reading, listen to music etc.  You do need to drink a lot of fluids the day before and right after and a lot of places will give you gatorade or juice and a snack; even if you're not hungry/thirsty eat/drink it and it should prevent you (for the most part) from feeling sick.  If it makes you dizzy or sick from donating, tell the technician the next time you check in and they can usually lower the amount the take from you; you just have to let them know!  Hope that helps!

Well, I don't want to scare you but I did it in college abt 7 or 8 yrs ago, and it was the worse, but it is different strokes for different folks. My friends in college did it too& they came out fine, but my veins were to small so it was hard for them to get the needle in the vein. Both of my arms were black and blue when they were done with me, and I looked like I was a junky when leaving the place, but they did still pay me my money and I was able to get my books as needed, so its kinda hard to tell someone not to do rather than tell them to do it, b/c like I said my frineds did it too, and they were fine. Remember when goes to donate you will be extremely cold, and before leaving they will make you stay for abt 15mins or so, just to make sure you don't pass out. Be careful & Good Luck...
