"Texas" things to go in OOT bags

Since a majority of our guests are not from Dallas (or Texas in general), I was thinking about doing some Texas/Dallas things in our OOT bags, like a bottle of Shiner, maybe Dublin Dr Pepper.

My cousin did a bunch of cool snacks made locally in Austin for her OOT bags in April, so I thought I may attempt something similar.

Right now I have our personalized water bottles, Dublin DP, Shiner, and I have a friend making some TX shaped cookies frosted with the flag.

I'm trying to think of other things that are Texas or Dallas-related to go in bags. Any suggestions?

The extent of mine is trail mix purchased at a Costco which is located in Texas. I initially wanted to do something 'Texas' like a chili mix, but ran out of time, money, and patience ;)
You are good to start looking into this now!!!! I wish I had, because it is a nice little addition for the OOT-ers.

I'm thinking of getting little boxes from Michaels, putting in spiced pecans from Austin Nuts, and sealing them with Texas stickers.

Also, I contacted the Texas Convention and Vistor's Bureau, and they shipped me --for free!-- 45 "Visit Dallas" magazines that I am putting in the bags.  Along with Texas Rangers schedules :)

Yeah, I already have the CVB thing checked off even though with our schedule of events (afternoon wedding), I don't think they'll get much time to do anything like that. I am just thinking F&B things to go in the bags.

    I am doing this too!

World market has baskets with twine and plastic for $4.99 each
I bought red/ white and Blue raffia. For memorial day they had these star clothes pins that I will clip there card too.

There is a Texas store at the Gallaria Mall on the top floor that sells Texas shaped chips and small jars of local made salsa! Whats a better snack in texas then chips and salsa? I think I'm going to do pralines too.

Make sure to check with your hotel about the restrictions. I can't use alcohol in my baskets and they are charging me $5 a basket to deliver them to the room. They won't just give them to them when they check in :(

I did Dallas Cowboys wet wipes and Texas Pecan Pralines--they were so cute, they came 2 in a box with a Texas flag on the front.

ETA:  Oh, I see you have flag cookies already.  I love the Dublin Dr. Pepper!  I wish I had thought of that.

I wish I could put Blue Bell ice cream in without it melting. One of my favorite things I miss about Texas.

Maybe if you can't do beer, you can include a Texas bottle opener with a list of recommended Texas beers?

Luv that idea about the visitor guides--going to steal it!

Where'd you get the wet wipes? I'd love if I could find some Mavs wipes since it would be prime BBall season.

They have hard ones and chewy ones.  I like the hard ones because the chewy ones are so messy.

Albertson's.  The one where I live has a huge Cowboys section.  They had BBQ sauce too but it was too expensive.

    My ideas:

-Joe T. Garcia's Salsa, or any Stubb's sauces/marinades/rubs (may get pricey though)
-LONE STAR BEER (I mean, Shiner is okay, and well known, but Lone Star is the "National Beer of Texas' and is rarely available out of state, unlike Shiner...just sayin' - I guess I may be biased since I have the old label tattooed on my arm...)
-Any Lone Star Beer related accessories
-kind of cheesy, but maybe one of the Texas stores has little Armadillo ornaments?
-Fun, but possibly labor intensive: mix CD of music by people from Texas (ZZ Top, to Beyonce, to Roy Orbison, to Jamie Fox, to Toadies)

I found Dr Pepper barbecue sauce.  There is also a Dr Pepper cake mix.

I had thought of this and there are some great ideas but I only have one problem and not sure if this will affect anyone else or not.  All of my OOT guests will be flying in and unless they check a bag, most of these items will not be allowed on.  Just a thought...  Lots of good ideas tho!

Most people do OOT bags with the intent that the guests will use the items while they are here.  So yeah, stuff like BBQ sauce is risky.  You want them to be able to enjoy the snacks and candy while they are here visiting for the most part.

A majority of mine are actually driving in, even the ones from AZ, so things should travel easy but yes a majority will be snacky things to have during the course of the weekend.

This is what my mom and I are doing. We are going to get little baskets and fill them with mainly snacks. I do like the Dublin DP though! Since our hotel is right off Main St and 114 in Grapevine, we are going to restraunts (well she is sending my dad) and see if there are menue or little things that other towns don't have. I know the ones from Lubbock don't have any of the restraunts along there except Chilis Joe's Hooters and Outback. Also, my mom suggested maybe going to the city of Grapevine and having a vistors guide for Grapevine in the basket too. Maybe you could get a city guide to nightlife or something similiar where your guests will be staying.

For anyone who wants to include the 90 page Dallas visitors guide, contact Barbara at barbara@dfwandbeyond.com  :)

Also, if you are in Arlington, there is a TX shop at the Parks that had a TON of cute things when I was there a couple weeks ago!

    Wendi,
I don't know if anyone mentioned it but there's a great little Texas shop on Main St. in Grapevine.

Also, this just jumped into my brain (sometimes brilliance is pain), but what about a packet of bluebonnet seeds?
  • edited December 2011
Thats a really good idea, especially for the ladies doing eco-friendly weddings.

I may steal it :D  (PS: Home Depot has seed packets for $.19 for those who are curious)
