Depends where you are getting married? Outside or inside what kind of surroundings? Its really up to you how you want people to dress.  Most wedding women do wear dresses/slacks/skirts and men dress pants/collared shirt or maybe a tie.  If its Formal and you want a blck tie then you need to just be clear on that.

it depends on what style your wedding is. day or night? casual or more formal? most weddings i've ever been to...females wear cocktail dresses, males wear at least dress pants, shirt, and tie if not a suit. i guess i would call that "typical" wedding attire, but really it's your call. but jalafa's right..if you want black tie, you need to say so.
