If we want to get married in the state of CT, but our actual ceremony is in HI - can we bring the marriage license to a different state and have it signed? I'm pretty sure that isn't how this works bu

Nope, the marriage license is valid only in the state in which it is issued.  In some states, it's only for the specific county, town, etc., in which it is issued.

We did a legal ceremony in CT (where we live) in 2010, but we're planning a big church wedding for May of this year. You could always do the legal part in CT and then the actual ceremony in HI. The legal part is almost just a matter of paperwork. The ceremony will be the fun part.
