I'm trying it!

I bought sunflower oil, caster oil, and tea tree oil last night at Whole Foods. I mixed 4 tablespoons of sunflower oil, 1 teaspoon of caster oil, and a few drops of tea tree oil. Sunflower oil cost $4.50, caster oil cost $3.95, and tea tree oil cost $7 (for a teeny tiny bottle, but I thought the anti-bacterial properties would be good).

It smelled mostly like the tea tree oil, but very mild and I like that smell anyway. It smelled a lot like most upscale facial cleansers I've used, honestly - mildly herbal. The only difference was it doesn't lather like facial cleanser.

I really like it so far! Putting it on was relaxing and felt nice (I was afraid it would feel slimey). The hot face cloth really released a lot of the aromas and made me feel like I was having a facial at a spa. My face felt super clean and soft after but not dry or tight, and definitely not at all oily or greasy. I even rubbed it down my neck, and that felt moisturized but not oily. Right after, it felt like my skin could 'breathe', so I'm guessing that's a good sign!

I'm going to try to take daily pictures of my face to record the difference - you could maybe use it on your blog if you wanted when I'm all done?

I'm so intrigued by this!!!! Your experience sounds really amazingly relaxing and I sort of want to do it too....I should bust out my essential oils!! Definitely update us on the progress, hope it works for you!!!

My sister just started doing this, too. She's always had really acne-prone skin, while I had really good skin until about the past 2 years. I'd like to know how it works out, maybe between the two of you I will learn something that could really help.

Yay Cal! Yes, if you don't mind, I'd love to use you for the blog! My first few days were so amazing, then the following week I started getting pimples as my skin starting purging, but as long as you make sure the oil has been completely removed, you will (hopefully) not get a huge cystic breakout. The tea tree oil should last long since you use so little, mine has. I haven't even gone through half of it. I AM SO EXCITEDDDD!!!

Oh, I'm happy to share! I'll be the guinea pig. Though CAB already does it and has gorgeous skin!

I'm expecting a bit of a breakout, but I hope they're at least surface acne rather than cystic. From the internet research I did on it, that seemed to be the case - it all comes to the top and comes out. I think when my skin gets dry, it traps stuff underneath so it becomes cystic.

My pictures will be phone pictures, and probably not pretty, but I at least want to document my skin!

I won't post every day, but I'll update once in awhile, and feel free to ask me about it. I'll definitely do a "before" and "after" picture if it works, though!

I don't take off my makeup first - it's supposed to be your only cleanser, and it comes off in one fell swoop. Because it's just oils and no benzoil peroxide or anything, I can rub it on my eyelids and lips and such, so I just take my face at the end of the day, a big tablespoon of blended oil (there's different ones you can use) and rub it gently into my skin while I leave the sink running on hot to get it as hot as possible. I massaged it from my chin (my worst spot) up my cheekbones, across my nose, and over my forehead, and then rubbed it gently over my eyes. While I was at it, I rubbed it down my chin and onto my neck since I think that needs some moisturizing, too, and occasionally I get pimples under my chin. Then you take a clean wash cloth, get it wet with very warm (hot) water, and let it soak into your face before gently rubbing off the oil. I used a bit of water, 2-3x, but didn't overdry it. Makeup and dirt came off with the oil!

It felt fresh and like it could breath (I think the teatree oil) and not at all heavy. In the morning, you just rinse it with warm water and put makeup on and go. I didn't wear foundation today, but a little bit of blush (not a target zone for me) and mascara.

ETA: My chin is my bad spot, along with some bigger pores on my nose, and an uneven surface but not necessarily pimples on my forehead - it looks oily today, though often it's quite dry.

I'm interested in this as well. Do you leave the washcloth damp sitting on your face, or do you get it wet and then press into areas of your face until they are wet then wipe off? (does that even make sense? lol)

Yeah, I get what you mean - do you wipe it quickly, or let it sink in.

The websites I had read suggested leave it on your face for a few seconds (10-15) and then lightly massage the oil off. It's all about massaging your skin, no harsh wiping which can aggitate the skin.

I just found this that explains the oil options a bit more - it's not an exact science, and everyone can have a different blend that works best for them. Based on this info, I might add a bit of sesame oil to my mix after I've tried it for a few weeks! I don't want to screw with it too much at first because I want to know what works or what doesn't so I can tweak it.

Here's the overview of different oils for OCM:

• Avocado oil - nourishes and restores dry, dehydrated skin. It is rich in It is rich in vitamin A, B1, B2, D, E and panothenic acid.

• Borage oil - It contains gamma linolenic acid, a fatty acid used in cosmetics as an emollient, antioxidant, and cell regulator. It is used to promote healthy skin growth and is an anti-inflammatory agent.

• Castor oil - it is an excellent emollient (leaves the skin soft & smooth), good hair conditioner (repairs & nourishes the hair, stimulates the scalp), moisturizer & lubricant (gives shine to lipsticks & lip balms). It can be added to formulas as is to the oil phase. Castor oil is used in creams, lotions, hair care products, bath oil, sun & baby care products, lip care products. It is extremely useful for brittle nails and dry chapped skin.

• Grapeseed oil - It is an emollient oil that also has good antioxidant properties.

• Jojoba oil - This oil is an excellent moisturizer; emollient (prevents transdermal water loss), anti-wrinkle agent (provides smoothness & softness), good lubricant (without oil film,
penetrates the skin), protects partly from UV radiation (SPF about 4). It penetrates skin rapidly and nourishes, softens and moisturizes.

• Kukui oil - It is high in essential fatty acids and is helpful for softening and restructuring skin. It
is an excellent choice for sensitive skin and skin that is mature, damages and wrinkled.

• Lanolin oil - This oil is used as an emollient, conditioner and moisturizer. It has limited water-in-oil emulsifier properties. The typical use is 2-10% in skin care applications such as creams and lotions.

• Macademia Nut oil - It is similar to the sebum produced by human skin. It is high in palmitoleic acid and an excellent for skin conditioning after exposure to the sun. Its absorption rate is high and blends well in emulsions.

• Safflower oil - It is used for its moisturizing properties and will not irritate skin or aggravate acne. It is used in skin care formulations such as creams and lotions and in lip balms.

• Sesame oil - This oil has aromatic, soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Sesame Oil
has sunscreening properties SPF 4 on its own. It is used in skin care formulations such as creams and lotions and in massage oils.

• Soy Bean oil - It has natural moisturizing factors and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in skin care formulations such as creams and lotions and in massage oils. <Note: you've probably already got soy bean oil in your cupboard too -- have a look at the label on your bottle of Crisco vegetable oil!! />

• Sunflower oil - it contains vitamins A, C, D, E and is high in linoleic acid. This oil will not irritate skin or aggravate acne. It is used in skin care formulations such as creams and lotions and in massage oils.

• Sweet Almond oil - It is an excellent emollient (leaves the skin soft, smooth & conditioned), good nourishing and revitalizing effect (penetrates well the skin), moisturizer; lubricant, heals injured and chapped skin. This oil is used in creams, lotions, protecting and healing creams, ointments, bath oils, makeup & sun care products, personal & baby care products.

• Wheat germ oil - It is a rich source of vitamin A, E, D and in protein. This oil has nourishing and antioxidant effects. It can be used in hair and skin care applications, particularly anti-wrinkle creams.

• Apricot Kernal oil - It is an excellent softener for the delicate skin around the eyes, mouth and neck.

Yeah, I do it with makeup on, too. Probably the best makeup remover everrr... Cal, I can totally see glowing skin already! It immediately sloshes off all the dead, and cleans those pores! I love it!

ETA: I use Jojoba oil, Castor oil (CAUTION: If you use this, you'll wanna use very VERY little.) and Tea Tree. I even got a bottle with a glass dropper and made my mix in bulk. Now I just shake the amber bottle, and use a full drop of the mix. Not only does is prevent waste, but it also saves time!

So based off of this list, you can mix these oils and use it as a face cleanser?

Pretty much, Ty. Depending on your skin type, you combine your oils and use just that to cleanse your skin. I'm big on taking sulfates out of my cleansing routines, which is why I started doing this. As you can see, it is best to do a lot of research, so that you don't get a negative result. There are a lot of people online that will say they've had a negative experience, but I have also noticed that they would use too much Castor Oil, or not completely wash off the oils, etc. The sites that Cal posted are also the ones I have used to do my research on it. They give great advice on it!

Yep, Ty, that's basically it. You use a carrier oil (sunflower oil for me, but a lot of people use extra virgin olive oil - any one of the ones I listed before would work, too), then you use a cleansing oil (almost always castor oil - I started with a very little bit of this and will build up because it can be harsh on your skin - 1 teaspoon of castor oil to 4 tablespoons of sunflower oil, whereas some websites recommend 50/50). You then can add a third or fourth or even a fifth oil if you so choose, but it's best to start simple to see what works. If I had 4 oils and had a bad reaction, I wouldn't know which oil caused it. Whereas if I start off with 2, I can go a few weeks and then play with the mixture a bit and add more to see if it helps or hurts my progress.

I do use a bit of tea tree oil as it's a natural antibiotic and I've used it before without reactions. In the future, I think I'd like to add almond oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil to play with the mixture to find what moisturizes and cleanses best. But so far I'm loving this far more than I thought!

For what it's worth, a big bottle of sunflower oil, decent sized bottle of castor oil, and a small bottle of tea tree oil at Whole Foods came to $15.

It sounds like it could be very good or go very badly. haha Thanks for the tips.

I just throw on a face lotion every morning after showering because my skin feels tight and dry after showers. It's Olay 7 in 1 anti-aging. I like it a lot but don't know if this will help in the long run or not.

I have a couple of these little white 'pimples' or dots on my face and I don't know exactly what they are or how to get rid of them. They don't look like pimples and I can't pop them. They have been there for months now!
I have three and they are between my nose and my cheek. It's annoying.

Do you think if I tried OCM it might make them go away?

It sounds like it could be, especially with the Olay product. I use that too, Ty (or did until yesterday...) and it has benzoyl peroxide in it, yes? It could be that it's drying out the top layer of your skin and preventing it from exfoliating naturally. I think that's why I have the cystic acne, and why I'm trying OCM.

You're right, it could go really good or really bad, but I think so far based on how it felt and my skin's initial reaction that it will likely go very, VERY good! I'm not so sure it would if I used a lot more castor oil, though. Or extra virgin olive oil - no matter what the websites say, I still feel like EVOO would block up my skin something fierce. It does warn against using coconut oil as it's a known cosmogenic (blocks pores).

The thing is, facials can also go really really good, or REALLY really bad. If you educate yourself, and do it right, you won't have a bad reaction. I think in the long run, the good outweighs the bad with OCM.

I really would love to try this, because I do occasionally have really bad breakouts, but man it makes me nervous to do so 15 weeks and 2 days before my wedding...

Ok I just found this so I'm coming in late to the convo...

I'm in grad school for chemistry, so I feel like I know a smidgen about what I should about products and what we should/ shouldn't put on our skin...

No idea if this is a good method or not, but I'd be totally willing to try it if I weren't too lazy to mix the oils up and test drive the right balance for my skin.

My personal rule of thumb with products:

-No animal testing

-No animal byproducts

-No amines (any ingredient that includes -amine in its name is an amine of some form)

-No sulfates (ditto amine explanation)

-No parabens

There are a few other things I like to avoid, but products that follow these rules usually follow all the rules I keep to.

Basically if you can pronounce the names of all the ingredients, or if all the ingredient names are Latin names of plants, you're doing pretty good.

If I were as close to your wedding as you are, I'd wait until after. A bad breakout can last several weeks, and it can apparently take 2-3 weeks of the OCM to trigger the "purge". I wouldn't want to mess with anything that even remotely works until after!

And LOL, I didn't remember you were studying chemistry. Does the oil face wash make sense chemically? I read something about "like washes away like" as logic for why oil was a better base than water for face wash, but I don't know how much I rely on that.

I'm 7 months from my wedding, so I'm willing to play around a bit!

You might be right. I google imaged it and there were some GROOOOOSSSS pictures that popped up.

Mine looks like this (from google)

But I only have 3 of those dots...
2 on my right side and 1 on my left.

Am I safe to assume this treatment will help get rid of them? :)

Sorry Fire! Took me a while to get back to you.

I did do it about 3 months away til the wedding, actually, 2 months, but I GOT LUCKY. So, I guess what I am saying here is, if you do decide to try it, and you are more of a cautious person than a daredevil like I am, then wait. I say a good time to try it is at least 4 months prior.

That looks like milia. It's a tiny cyst that forms on the top layer of skin. They are a pain to remove. You basically have to get the extracted by an estathetican. Some people have tried the product Natrualis for Milia. I have yet to try it, I constantly have them on my cheeks and under my eyes, since I was a teen.
