I'm always in awe of authors - how do they come up with this stuff? What really stood out to me is how this book is great for a large age range, and it also provides so much to discuss. I almost wish I was in a literature class to discuss it more.

Really? That surprises me too. It seems kinda violent, but maybe I'm just in denial, lol. Kids blow each other up on video games every day.
My BFF is reading them now and says she's not all that impressed. It makes me sad, lol. I loved the books. I'm also really impressed how people can just put a story out like that and have all the details and everything. I'd never be that creative.

I agree there was violence, but I don't know, I thought it was necessary to tell the story.
Some random thoughts I had:
1. Say you're a 12 year old reading the book. The author definitely did not have the characters do more than kiss. Then, Peeta tells everyone Katniss is pregnant. Does everyone at 12 years old know for sure you can't get pregnant from kissing? Or are we scaring the beejesus out of some uneducated children? I just thought it was kind of a strange part to the story.
2. What fascinates me most, I think, is that I believe this could happen. Which makes it crazy to think about their society compared to ours, and how at the end of their revolution, they nearly ended up in the exact same place.
3. I was disappointed by the lack of closure with her mother and Gale.

My general opinions on the books is that I love the story overall, but the writing was lacking. However, I think that's exactly why I'm hoping that they'll translate better into the movie(s) because that should be able to fill in the writing that was lacking a bit.
As far as the age range, I think generally with those, don't the authors just write (with an age group in mind, but not exactly set) and the publisher determines the age range? Perhaps she didn't really intend it to be content young enough for 12, but overall the publisher decided it was? I dunno, but if a kid doesn't know that you can't get pregnant from kissing at 12, then maybe this book will be a great opener for parents to start that discussion, lol.

ITA. And you know what's funny? I did not feel that way the first time I read it, I didn't even notice it. After hearing everyone say that same thing here though, I noticed it big time when I reread the books & I was really disappointed at the end.

I was also bothered by the ending... the whole ending made me really mad and I kept thinking that Katniss would wake up from a tracker jacket type dream and realize it hadn't happened that way.
I was also bothered by the lack of closure with Gale and with the halfass ending with Peeta in the future. I hate those kinds of flash forward endings anyway because I feel they are cheap.
Overall I liked the story a lot, the writing wasn't the best and there were some loose ends but I forgave them since I liked the story so much.
And I don't really see how the target age range is 12-17, although I shouldn't be surprised since I was reading some thick novels when I was 12 that had profanity, violence and adult topics. My mom and I shared books (still do!)

I read Flowers in the Attic when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. Whoops!
Now, I tend to read fast, so I really didn't notice anything specific about the writing being bad? Are there certain things people are pointing out?
I would enjoy reading all three of them again.
I'm also looking forward to the movies. I'm curious to see how they handle the violence with the PG-13 rating.

I'm still not disappointed with the end. I hated Gale, like a completly irrational hatred of a fictional character and I don't give a sh!t what happened to him lol. Also, I like happy endings. I like that life just went on because I feel like that's how life is.

I don't think it was 'bad' as much as just not as descriptive as I would have liked, especially in the more emotional scenes in the books. I think this is more a trademark of the age range it's written for and less with the writing itself, but either way, I think the movie can only strengthen the things that were lacking for me (provided the acting is good).

THIS. I was totally Team Gale, and I was irrationally pissed off when she just ended it without any sort of closure between Katniss & Gale and Katniss & her mom. That just seemed like a complete cop out on her (the author's) part.
I also did not enjoy the ending in general, beyond that lack of closure. I felt like she just gave up at the end, and wanted to get it done. I hated that Katniss just married Peeta & had kids. I understand that she didn't originally want to get married & have kids because of the Hunger Games, but it just didn't sit right with me when she just went along with it.
I really loved the series as a whole, but the ending really, REALLY disappointed me.

I'm like this, too. I can put up with a lot of things, as long as there aren't tons of typos or grammatical errors. I read a book with a really good plot, but the fact that "your" was written as "you're" every time killed me!

I guess one thing I noticed is that I felt the last 3/4 of book 2 was kind of rushed. I had like, 50 pages left and they had just started the Hunger Games. I felt like that could have maybe been flushed out more.
I hated that Katniss voted yes to having the Hunger Games again with Capitol children. And then after that meeting, I know she killed Coin, but that was never really discussed again? Did I miss it?
I wanted more. I had many, many questions about how they set up their new society.

I really loved the books but I wasn't thrilled with the ending either. I was so upset about Prim.
I also read Flowers in the Attic when I was pretty young. I liked them but they were...odd.

THIS 100%!!!!!!!!! That's exactly how I felt about it.
Also was pissed that Katniss voted for the hunger games with the Capitol children, but I'm glad she killed that evil bitch Coin. I'm seriously annoyed it was never mentioned again, did it happen? Did it not happen? Having another hunger games just went against what Katniss stood for.
And I was so sad about Prim that I teared up. And (as I said before) I kept hoping that was a bad dream or hallucination that Katniss had.

Polo, I think the author said she got the idea for the story from what's currently going on in the news. About how some countries use children in war and what would happen if it escalated.
I didn't think there was any closure lacking with Gale. They went down separate paths, that's all. It was never going to be Gale in the end, we knew that from the beginning. She never saw a future with him. She saw a future with Peeta and it was Peeta that was able to reach her.
I agree with Jemimi that the writing was rough around the edges. The author used that phrase "but what could she do?" too often. It's one of my pet peeved that author do. It's supposed to trick the reader into agreeing with the character's choice. It never works with me.

I thought that Katniss agreed to the Hunger Games so that she could then kill Coin in that public setting and then there would be no more Hunger Games. Is that not what happened?

No, she initially really wanted the Capital to feel their wrath. She had no way if knowing that agreeing would guarantee her a chance to publicly execute Coin. :/

no, what bethsmiles said is correct. Katniss was previously told that Coin didn't like her because she seemed like competition if the rebellion worked. Katniss didn't always go along with what Coin wanted. Katnisswanted to make sure that Coin trusted her, so she voted yes.

Coin had sent Peeta to the Capitol with them in hopes he would kill her. When they all thought she had died, she already had the announcement ready to give. Coin didn't like Katniss because she didn't want anyone to challenge her, and was willing to get rid of her.
