New Year's Resolutions

While we're all just recovering from Christmas - too much delicious food & wrapping paper in places you didn't know it could get to (minds outta the gutter!) & thank you cards to write - let's get ready for next weekend and talk New Year's resolutions.  A friend asked me yesterday what mine are and I hadn't even thought about it.  So, what are your resolutions/goals/etc for the new year.  And, will you still to them?!?

Re: New Year's Resolutions

  • I usually refuse to set Resolutions. I prefer to make lifestyle changes at any point. I don't see the reason to have it all hang on one day.

I do however set goals for the year. I just don't make my action plan to acheive those goals affective on January 1. Usually what happens with resolutions for me is that I will stick to them for a little bit and then I will fall off the wagon, and instead of getting back on, I usually let myself feel defeated because it's no lnger a New Year's Resolution.

  • i usually set a goal to wok on for the year.  This year I think it shall be to find a new job.  Losing weight isn't an resolution, because I'm consistently trying to stay active and eat right.  Perhaps my real goal is to plan and have a wedding without going insane. but I don't think that goal will be achieved.
  • I don't set resolutions. I also make goals. Some goals are easier to hit than others such as run so many races in one yr. If I register I know I have to do it bc I already paid for it.

  • This year I'm setting a goal to lose 60 lbs. It's not really a resolution, I've already started dieting and exercising.

  • I also like the idea of goals more than resolutions.  And I totally agree with ya Ollie - any day can be the day to begin a resolution!!

My goals for the year include completing my first half marathon - even though I'm behind on my training and I know I'll have to walk.  A lot.  Then, a second half marathon later in the year where I won't walk at all!!  Um, I would also like to be engaged sooner rather than later and married later in the year but that goal doesn't really have anything to do with me - it rests in BF's hands!!  So me & my engagement pony, Patience, are gonna hang out for awhile until something happens!!

  • I set goals at the start of each new year, most are pretty generic but I am usually able to stick to them.  2012 is going to be a busy year, in so many good ways.  I am looking forward to it a lot.

  • I'm on the 'resolutions aren't just for a new year' train. For example, I toyed with the idea of starting Insanity on Jan. 2, but thought I'd like to send a little message to myself that today is the first day of the rest of my life.... :)

If I WAS going to set a resolution, though, it would be to live each day like it's my last. Work hard, play hard, love hard.

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • I set goals more than 'resolutions' and depending on what they are, I tend to stick to them fairly well.  I make goals throughout the year, but with a fresh start of a new year, it's easier to remember how long it's been.

This year is a continuing goal of being more healthy/active.  H starts his new schedule on 1/12, so he'll actually be home on weeknights and we can plan healthier dinners (he currently works till 11pm M-Th, so I only cook for myself and don't do a very good job with it).  I really want to try doing meal planning for the whole week and sticking to it, as well as getting a better routine for going to the gym.

  • I like to set goals. I usually don't make or keep New Year's resolutions.

Yesterday was a bad night and so this year I'm cutting back on drinking (aka, no more than 1 drink, if that). With my current antidepressants, it's just a really dangerous combo to drink too much and it makes me extremely depressed, it's stupid.

If it wasn't New Year's soon I'd be doing it anyway and I'm going to start now. I'm sort of embarrassed to type this on a forum but I hope that having other people know will keep me on track.

  • I also prefer to select my days and times for making changes in my life rather than some arbitrary custom telling me to do so.  For instance, around Thanksgiving I decided I had gained enough weight (back, for the 3rd time since my daughter was born--she is now 7), so I joined SparkPeople and have been tracking food and fitness ever since.  I did fall off the wagon over the last week or so, but will happily report I am back on track as of today.  I started out my day with a 20 minute cardio routine, followed by 20 minutes of strength training and successfully met my goals for calories, fat and protein intake.

Now, I want to get back into doing yoga once I am fully in the groove with working out (don't want it to be an either/or proposition when time gets tight.)  While I was writing all this, I realised that a big problem I used to have was actually finding and taking time in my life to do things just for me.  Does anyone else have that issue?

  • I think my NY's resolution will be to get a new job. If all goes according to plan I'll be going back to school either this summer or next fall and hopefully getting out of this crappy job I have now and finding something more fulfilling to do.
