The President on The View

What's your take?

I cringe quite a bit over the idea. It's one thing to run the talk show circuit before and after you hold office, but tacky to sit down with people one small step above nasty paparazzi for an interview when you should be upholding the reverence and respect of your Office. The fact that he declined to speak at the BSA 100th anniversary because of freakin Whoopi Goldberg just adds to the tackiness. You hold one of the highest offices in the entire world. Hold off on yacking it up with the busybodies of TV for a few years, ok?

The fact that he declined to speak at the BSA 100th anniversary

**And is the organization's honorary president

    Agreed 100%, Bec.

  • I agree.  I feel like he is constantly on the campaign trail and that there are MUCH better things he could be doing with his time.

  • I'm an Obama supporter, but I think he should have spoke to the Boy Scouts. I think that would have send a much bigger message than the View.

  • I agree.

But you know, this presidency alone has been strange, and I mean that in a non-political way.

Why are he and Michelle ALWAYS in the tabloids? He's not a celebrity that's cracked out in public or sleeping around with every other celebrity in Hollywood; he's the PRESIDENT. I think that it's the way that the media has taken the office of presidency and watered it down into celebrity gossip that I find disgusting. I highly doubt tha that The View invited President Bush to come and sit while he was in office. There's just a different stigma around the Obamas that I have yet to comprehend, and it has nothing to do with what his politics are.

What was this about? I live under a rock when it comes to most politics and / or Whoopi Goldberg.
  • He's doing The View instead of speaking at the 100th Anniversary Celebration for BSA. That's the part that makes me cringe the most.
  • Obama has a fan base. Which sounds strange as a political figure. But it's true. The tabloids report on his family and talk shows want him as a guest because there's a huge demand.

FWIW, most of the really ridiculous tabloids always have a poltical figure on the over. Like, "Jimmy Carter farms peanuts for commies!" "Hilary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi in torrid love triangle!" I don't know what kind of demand there is for that.

Here's one (albeit biased) article I got as an alert talking about how the White House responded "we were always going to be out of town." And how other presidents had changed travel schedules in order to attend. Apparently, he did TAPE a message, and based on the pictures my dad's sent, so did Biden.

But, today, they've got some WWE stars (I can't see who they are) and Sgt. Slaughter, and Mike Rowe is there. I'll share more if I get more info.

  • I think that the tabloids jump on the Obamas because there is a market out there.  I think a lot of people think he must live a completely different lifestyle just because he is black, rather than because he is president.  Obama is scrutinized much more than many other politcial figures in this manner.

Also, I think some of the magazine articles about Michelle are just included to prove how "liberal" and "progressive" the magazine is.  For instance, as soon as Obama was elected, Michelle was on the Glamour Women of the Year cover.  The article was about her fashion sense and glamour (and mentioned some of her charity work, etc.)  To me, it read "We are sooooo superliberal, we love the new black president's wife and her awesome style!"

FWIW--I am a big Obama supporter.
  • I like to call it Cosby Syndrome, npas. It's definitely a new fascination. People are very interested.

You have a point - but I think there are a lot of mediums out there that are better for a presidential platform than The View.  Watching The View is like volunteering yourself to witness a cackling catfight for a half hour and then watching four-five women asking people who matter really stupid, pointless questions.

I love Barbara Walters and I appreciate her vision for when she started the show - I just think it's turned into a joke.

  • There's a difference between demand for stories about him and him distancing himself from the gutter of daytime TV. Respect your position and uphold a sense of reverence. Do an exlusive interview with a respected news source that's unscripted. You really don't have to lie with the swine to appeal to the farmer.
  • I'd rather see Mike Rowe anyway.

And The View certainly shouldn't be a priority for the President. Yes, he'll reach millions of people, but I would hope most people would rather he being doing something productive instead of visiting a trash daytime talk show.

FWIW, I don't support the BSA, at least not the beliefs they have about gay people not being allowed in.

  • It's one thing, IMO, if you are president and people just so happen to be really interested in you.  It's another if you play into it.

He does exclusive interviews too. But not everyone watches respected news sources. They get their news from The View and other talk shows. I think he should have chose the BSA this time. But I think political presense on talk shows is just the nature of the beast. From a campaigning standpoint, it's necessary. And when you're a first-term president, you're always campaigning.

  • Well then, maybe next week he can give the paternity test results on Maury and break up a fight on Springer. Those appeal to the masses as well. My point is, you can be accessible without resorting to trash tv. He broadcasts speeches at night; why not broadcast a one-on-one interview during the day with a reputable anchor instead of cackling about with the Queens of Trash?
  • But you can't be less accessible than your potential opponents. You have to stay on everyone's mind. More people get their news from Jon Stewart and Whoopi than Diane Sawyer. I don't like it. But it's difficult to get around it.

  • I get your point. I just think he shouldn't sacrifice his honor and the honor of his position to gain celebrity. Once that's gone, it's gone. Not just for him, but for future presidents as well. The advantage a holding officer has in campaign time is his record while in office and his history of performance. His opponents can never gain that while campaigning. And the people actually voting are not those getting their news from Jon and Whoopie.

<div>This. It's sad, but true--The Daily Show, Colbert Report, etc...they draw a large audience, and for a large populations of citizens, these shows are their only source of news. </div>

<div>I don't think it's all about "gaining celebrity." That may factor in, but I think it's also about reaching a larger audience, a more broad audience than he would get from those who tune into a presidential speech on the evening news. </div>
