I have recently been doing a little research on getting married on a cruise ship (or on the beach once you arrive) or having a destination wedding.  Our plan (right now, it seems to keep changing because we can't make up our minds) is to have just us two.  I looked into Carnival and Royal Caribbean and found there was a significant increase between the two's wedding packages.  Then I looked into destination wedding packages and found that it was more expensive than what I was expecting.  We are on a limited budget and wanted to possibly maximize our wedding with a honeymoon? I don't know, I think because it's "wedding" related it's more expensive.  Does anyone have any experience with picking and choosing things such as ordering a regular cake through the cruiseline and it being cheaper than what's available for the "wedding" deal? Or has anyone contacted officials in the Caribbean and set up something with them instead of going through a "packaged" deal?

Does this make sense? Sorry for the rambling :)

I have heard that getting all the documents and the proper officials lined up in the Caribbean is tough and doesn't always happen.  I would say just always, always have a back up plan when planning a DW.

Most "cruise ship weddings" actually take place at the dock, before the ship sails.  As someone else points out, you may need extensive documentation to get married at the actual port of call.

A patient of ours got married in Mexico and then the papers and documentation got "lost" and officials wanted extra $$$$, so they ended up going to the courthouse back here and getting married again - just to be sure it's official.  H and I also have a friend whose daughter had a destination wedding somewhere in the Carribean and the ceremony itself was just a "symbolic?"  They came back here and did the whole thing over again - this time official ceremony with a huge reception.  Very weird.  I guess I would be worried if I married out of the country whether or not it was really official.  But I'm a worrywort like that.

ETA:  OP, rather than go to sea or out of the country to get married, why not choose a destination here in the US?  My original idea was to get married in Tahoe, but by the time we would spend the money to get our sons there and put them up in a hotel, it would have been way too spendy.  Of course, just the two of us would have been awesome too.
