Wedding Woes

I have a RPOTD, too.

I heard "Hurt Me Tomorrow" by K'Naan this morning on my walk. It's an okay song, whatever, but the lyrics brought me up a little short:

I used to be a strange fruit
Billy Holiday, then you got me by my roots
Sent the pain away
I tried to question our direction, that was my mistake
I had to ask you where we going baby, Marvin Gaye
I used to do it like Sinatra, do it my way
Now I'm the Fuji of my Lauren Hill that got away
I thought we had an 'at last love', Etta James
But now I'm wondering...

Ok, so, I get the conceit - song titles, mention the artist, yadda yadda. But am I - I don't know - wrong to think that "Strange Fruit" doesn't belong in a silly song about a breakup? (Lyrics: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/billie+holiday/strange+fruit_20017859.html

Ick.  That leaves a bad taste in my mouth, too.

S/O strange fruit...did you know that the guy who wrote that song was also the guy who adopted the children of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg after they were executed?  There was a story on NPR earlier this week about it. I don't know exactly why, but it blew my mind a little.

  • I agree.  It's just ...ugh.
  • Also, I'm thinking that you should record some bad pop songs under the name K'Nai.

  • Zsa, i saw that article.  I've ordered his book about the song.  He's also the guy who wrote the new book about Elizabeth and Hazel: 2 Women of LIttle Rock.  Most of his books sounded very interesting, I hope they're not bad.

This really feels like he doesn't know what the "strange fruit" is.  B/c if he does, it doesn't even make sense.

I heard that too, it was truly fascinating.  And that whole nonsense about "Did the communist party pay you to write this song?"  Right, because no one could see that lynchings were wrong without Teh Communists telling them so.
