I am not planning on using a whole song.. I am thinking of however using either a phrase from one song or a few select phrases from about 2 or 3 songs that fit together an fit our life.  Do you think this is a bad idea to use song lyrics as part of our vows? I would have him do the same, maybe start off with phrases we choose and then finish with the average, i take you to be my husband love cherish blah blah...

I didn't think he would want to write his own vows but he said that it sounds like a great idea. If you write your own vows do you still say the traditional to have and hold part?

I definitely think it depends on the couple.  If the lyrics meant something to their relationship, or if they were big music buffs, I would find it really appropriate.  If they were just adding something to sound poetic, I'd think it was a little corny because I prefer words from the heart that reflect the true nature of the couple.

We wrote our own vows, start to finish about 30 seconds each.  No poems / lyrics and no traditional vows at the end.  It worked well for us, but certainly can be considered too alternative for more traditional couples.

I think this is a great idea. Songs just have a way with words. Its your day and I think this would make it even more special. What I would do, is write down lyrics that you like, then you can arrange them and add your own twist/wording to it.

I second JaeGray12's post. That's a really great idea.

I would also consider using songs that aren't incredibly well-known, unless they truly mean something incredibly significant to you. You don't want to make the cheese factor too high! If you get just the right lyrics, you could even have them flow into some of the more traditional vows at the end.

I really like this idea though...my wedding has a music theme, so you've given me some great inspiration.

Good luck!

My FI was a music major and we love going to concerts together and I haven't seen his vows yet but from what he's told me he basically wrote them out of song titles! I love it and its special to us, and thas what vows should be. So if you love it, and you mean it, go for it!

I would have to see how it was written to comment on whether or not it sounds weird.
