Stressed out? Ready to smack your FMIL, MOH, or both? Do it! Or tell us all about it and keep your hands to yourself.
There's a new guy at work.  He's super nice and a great worker.  I think he has an accent but I can't be sure (I'm hearing impaired) and I really want to ask where he's from but: a.) I don't

There's a new guy at work.  He's super nice and a great worker.  I think he has an accent but I can't be sure (I'm hearing impaired) and I really want to ask where he's from but:

a.) I don't want him to feel awkward or annoyed about being asked

and

b.) If he doesn't have an accent I look like a dumba$$

Would you ask a co-worker about their country of origin, especially if you're not certain they are even foreign born?

I think it can come up after you are friends, but it is a poor opening line.  He might be embarassed about the accent or considers his birth location as personal info.  You could very easily look like a dumba$$.

I just a friendly gal looking for options.

That's what I'm thinking.  We've talked several times but I don't really want to be all "Good morning, where were you born, can I borrow some paperclips?".

no. don't ask. eventually if you become close acquaintences, it may come up naturally in conversation. until then, you guys are coworkers and it's not appropriate to get that personal.

The first question people ask me is usually 'where are you from' or 'are you australian' (which I'm not, I'm English).

We had a doggy party today for one of Nimo's friends... three people asked me where I was from.

It gets wearing, really. It's not as bad here in MD as it was in FL, but really. SO many people asked me in FL, I was at the point to where I couldn't take it anymore. People were stopping me on the street after hearing me talk. I was so glad when I got on the plane, because the next person to ask me would have had a punch in the face - and I'm not normally violent.

Please don't ask. Wait until you become better acquainted.

I'm just going to go ahead and say that my love for the NY accent is one of the main reasons I was able to meet/date Man.
