Men's tux length and BM's dress length "matching?"

ok, so FI really wants to wear some sort of tux with long tails, maybe something like this:
(but maybe with black pants)

I think it's ok if the GM don't completely match his tux, maybe if they have something that's more like a suit-jacket (sorry, I don't know all the proper terminology!) like this:

(FI likes the gray look of the vest/tie for himself, but we are thinking blue ties/vest for the GM to match the BMs dresses. First of all, would that look weird for him to have a not-matching color?)

HOWEVER... I really want the BMs to be able to wear tea-length dresses...

so...I would like your opinions...is it ok if the GM wear a shorter/different suit-jacket than FI? If the GM were to wear the same length as FI (longer and more formal,) should the BMs wear *long* dresses to be more formal?

The groom usually wears a different color vest and tie then his GM. And I think that having him in tails but the others in regular jackets would be fine with the girls is tea length dresses.

Ususally something like the first pic of the tux you posted is worn for a very, very formal evening event.

Yeah, my wedding is very formal and FI is wearing tails, and the groomsmen are wearing the first tux that you posted, but with the black pants and green vests to match the BMs. The BMs are in floor length dresses.

However, if your FI is wearing tails, then he's already going to look pretty formal, and it would give the groomsmen a similar cut of tux while standing next to him. Plus, guys look REALLY GOOD in that cut of tux. I think that as long as the cocktail dresses your bridesmaids are in aren't jersey fabric or something, that the level of formality would be fine to have the guys in the tuxes that your FI wants. Trust me, no one's going to be judging you because the guys have longer jackets and the girls are in cocktail dresses. =) Let your FI and the guys get what they want and you do what you want, and everyone will be happy.

[QUOTE]I beileve the picture you posted is a cutaway coat, usually worn with striped trousers.  It is for very formal DAYTIME weddings, and is not appropriate in the evening.  Kate's father wore one. A tuxedo is shorter, like a suit jacket, and is worn for evening weddings.  If you want your groom to wear a different length, he might wear a tailcoat with white tie.  This is for VERY formal evening weddings.  The usual rule is that the groom should match the groomsmen in levels of formality, and should be different from the groomsmen with a special buttonier. Do not put your groom in a cutaway morning coat for an evening wedding!
