Ordering a dress from China?

I have seen a wedding where the bridesmaids all ordered their dresses from China. The dresses were gorgeous and had no issues. I am considering ordering my wedding gown from China because not only are they cheap, but I found one I absolutely love. When a lady overheard me talk about the dress I wanted from China, she proceeded to tell me how people have been on tv saying they did that and the dresses came back really messed up or they received the completely wrong dress and could not return them as they got no response from Customer service. Has anyone else heard of this problem or maybe ordered your dress(es) from China? Any information or thoughts appreciated! The website in particular I am looking at is FishInTheSky.com

Re: Ordering a dress from China?

  • There's several things you need to think about.

First of all... there's a reason they're so cheap.  Best case scenario... the dress looks fine, but it's made of cheaper materials and shoddy construction.

Second of all.... think about the worst case scenario.  We've had plenty of girls come on these boards devastated because they've wasted time and money on an unwearable knock-off dress from China.  It's a complete gamble, and most of the time, these places have terrible customer service.  You will never see that $ again.

Lastly, while some professional designers use cheap, "sweatshop" type labor too, you can almost guarantee that your knock-off dress will be involved in that.  Also, if they're willing to create a knock-off gown, what other unethical business behavior are they engaging in?

Just don't do it.  There are other options.  Try and find your dream dress used, go to a consignment shop, or try to find a seamstress that can custom make your design.  There are also plenty of more budget-friendly designers (like alfred angelo), and other retailers like department stores that sell cheaper, but still high quality gowns (Ann taylor, nordstroms, bloomingdales, etc.)

  • I have read all of the above issues. I thought perhaps there were some reputable sites out there since I have seen dresses ordered from China and looked great. I dont know what site those dresses were ordered from.

My biggest issue is I want a colored dress - red, in particular. There are no colored wedding dresses made by Alfred Angelo or Davids Bridal. I have to look at bridesmaid or prom dresses. While some of them are nice, they aren't quite at a level of a wedding gown. I search for red ball gowns or red quincenera gowns (they have more detail to them) and most of the sites I find are from overseas. I am having trouble locating places in the USA.

A few red wedding gowns from reputable, North American companies: Mary's Bridal http://www.marysbridal.com/bridal.aspx (style S12-5618, S09-7925, s12-2343) Mia Solano http://miasolano.com/gallerydetails.asp?main_id=95&cat_id=27&subcat_id=0
  • http://miasolano.com/gallerydetails.asp?main_id=234&cat_id=27&subcat_id=0 There are several discounted styles by Allure and Maggie Sottero that were available in red. Maybe you can find a sample or used gown? Sorry. It wouldn't let me add that to my last post. I would strongly suggest against ordering from China. I dealt with several brides when I worked as a bridal consultant that came in with horror story Internet order gowns. . I know this doesn't help with your actual question of reputable sites. . .

[QUOTE]Most USA discounters do not post pictures on a website.  You telephone them with your information, and they will place an order for you.  They are not a shopping service, just a discount ordering firm. If you find a dress that you like, you can order it at a discount from <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.pearlsplace.com">www.pearlsplace.com</a> in Mettarie, LA.  We were very happy with our savings.  There is no discount on Maggie Sottero, though they can order it for you.  David's Bridal dresses are only sold through David's Bridal.  They do have a few red gowns: <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Strapless-Tulle-Ball-Gown-with-Beaded-Satin-Bodice-NT8017_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns">http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Strapless-Tulle-Ball-Gown-with-Beaded-Satin-Bodice-NT8017_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Strapless-Taffeta-Ball-Gown-with-Beaded-Bodice-NTT9325_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns">http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Strapless-Taffeta-Ball-Gown-with-Beaded-Bodice-NTT9325_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns</a> (You have to click on the red color to see it in red) <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Satin-and-Tulle-Asymetrical-Pick-Up-Ball-Gown-NTT9669_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns">http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Satin-and-Tulle-Asymetrical-Pick-Up-Ball-Gown-NTT9669_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns</a> (ditto) <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Tulle-Over-Satin-Gown-with-Metallic-Embroidery-NTV9675_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns">http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Tulle-Over-Satin-Gown-with-Metallic-Embroidery-NTV9675_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns</a>

Yeah I knew Davids Bridal had some red dresses but they are bridesmaid or prom dresses.. a little simpler than what I had in mind. they don't have any wedding or ball gowns that are a bit more elegant. I may have to suck it up and look a bit more into those ones though. They are definitely cheaper than a wedding gown. It's a shame you can't just order a wedding gown and have it dyed in that color. I appreciate the help with links!

Thanks for the links! I couldn't view the first one through Mary's bridal but the second one is red and white. I'm looking for an all out red gown. I might consider a 2 color dress if i came across the right one. but most of the 2 color dresses have a white dress with an accent color.  Rather than a red dress with white accent.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Ordering a dress from China? : Those aren't bridesmaid gowns that I posted.  They are red wedding gowns.

I didn't realize that until later after I posted. I thought they were just bridesmaid or prom dresses because the sizes only went up to 14 or 16 in some of them. One of them wasn't too bad. but biggest they had was a 14 and im more of a 16. (hopefully that will change in the next year <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-undecided.gif" border="0" alt="Undecided" title="Undecided" />)
