Changing your name

What all do you have to do to change your last name? My passport is with my current last name so is it okay to do it when I get back from the honeymoon?

Re: Changing your name

  • Yes.

Changing your last name takes some time.  You first have to change it through the SSA.  Once you receive your new card/wait the amount of days they tell you to you can then change it with the DMV.  Once that is done you can change your name on everything else.

Trying to do this prior to your HM, depending on how long you wait to take your HM, could be disastorous.

Also, if you are using your passport doesn't the name need on it need to match the name on the plane ticket?

  • Yes my plane ticket and pass port have my current name and will not have my married name. Thanks for the info!

  • Oh and don't do what I did, which was go to the SSA, get your number, sit for 45 minutes only to realize that you have forgotten the most important piece of paper...the marriage license.  Needless to say I was extremely pissed with my self!

  • I actually changed my name before the HM and still traveled under my maiden name. As long as your tickets have your maiden name and so does your passport your DL can say Minnie Mouse for all the TSA cares.  No one will even ask you for your DL as long as you have your passport.

  • This is good info to have.  Especially about brining the marriage license to the SS office!

If you are traveling abroad, then yes, your passport needs to match the name on the ticket, so it's good not to try to change your name beforehand.  I would be a litle nervous about having IDs in different names while traveling (some countries are less relaxed about names than others are), so if you do have a different name on your Driver's License (or credit cards) than is on your passport, then you might want to carry a copy of your marriage license to prove that the name-change is due to marriage.

  • I changed my name with the SS office and the DMV on the same day because the SS office gave me a slip of paper with my new name on it. I think I carried around our marriage license for about two weeks in my purse just in case I needed it!
  • In Texas you can even go to the DPS before the SSA as long as you go within 3 days. All you need is your current DL and your marriage license you've gotten back from the county clerk.

  • glad I read this. I would've been the ditzy blonde that changed everything before our HM and then been screwed. Also, thanks for the specifications about Texas. Good to know!

Look up online "No-Hassle Name Change Kit" and it will give you a step-by-step process on how to do this. Seems like such a pain. I'm NOT looking forward that aspect of being married, lol.
