Kitty TMI

Any other cat owners have this situation?  Our 12 year old cat has for the past few days seem to not want to cover her "business" when she is done...both # 1 and 2.  And for some reason when it is #2 it stinks bad.  According to FI, he thinks she is being a woman and is ashamed of not smelling like roses especially since she goes running after she does one.  I am hoping it is just a quirky behavior and not a sign of illness or something.

Re: Kitty TMI

  • Has her poop always smelled bad? If it is not normal behavior I recommend visiting the vet.

  • Her poop occasionally smells bad...she eats Meow Mix dry and a can of Fancy Feast wet every day.
  • Worst thing was...today FI and I were taking a nap and he smelt her poop from the kitchen and thought 2 things 1 I pooped my pants or 2 she did a smelly poop.

I would take her to the vet.  My cat, who was 19, began not covering her business in the litter box and she was also peeing on the floor and carpet.  My mom took her to the vet and it turned out she was in kidney failure.  I'm not saying this to scare you so I apologize if it does/I do, but I would rather take her to the vet and it be nothing, than not take her and it be something.

    Good Luck!

  • It sounds like a health issue.

Cats are instinctively secretive about their waste.  If it's especially smelly and she's not covering it, there's probably a medical reason why.

I mean, if your poop started smelling particularly bad and you stopped remembering to flush the toilet, wouldn't you think something was up?

    I'd call the vet.
  • Most things related to the litter box and eating habits are medical, so I'd take her to the vet.  My cat had some litter box issues not too long ago and needed emergency surgery (not to scare you!) but when those natural things aren't so natural, it's usually a sign of something.

same thing happened with our cat

on another note - the cat we have now neverrrr covers her little ... our other cat sometimes goes in and does it for her . its really annoying but this has always been normal behaviour for her so like other people said because this is different behaviour for your cat - better safe than sorry

Our cats NEVER cover their poop. I have no idea why. Their mother does, but the 3 littermates don't. Somehow they all skipped that class in kitten school. Unless you changed the diet recently, I'd definitely take it to the vet if the poop smells different.
  • I have only had the cat for a year and a few months, while FI has had her since she was months old.  He said she has sometimes not covered her urine.  And he hasnt been too upset about the poop.  He is an overprotective furry parent.
  • I'd still check with a vet, just in case. That sounds abnormal for a cat, and for yours by what you've told us.
