I am sooo not a fan of the unity sand/candle; not to mention our ceremony is going to be outdoors and either one of these events could be a little precarious given a bit of wind...   Does anybody

I am sooo not a fan of the unity sand/candle; not to mention our ceremony is going to be outdoors and either one of these events could be a little precarious given a bit of wind...   Does anybody have another "unity" idea?  Our current theme is sunset garden if that helps.  Thanks!

Wedding = unity. Ta-da!

Seriously, though, you don't need an extra unity ceremony. If you come across an idea that is truly meaningful to you and your groom, go for it, but don't feel like you have to do something just to do it.  We took communion together because that was meaningful to us, and instead of lighting candles, our mothers signed a family Bible that our parents gifted us.

we thought about doing a salt covenent, but it dates back thousands of years so that might not be new enough for ya. We think we might just do sand because its soemthing we can keep and put in our home somewhere (and our home is kinda of southwesternish so it fits) and it would take lots of explainging to do the salt covenent, and we dont want to proglong the ceremony with lots of talking. Heres some explination (but you can do it with any sort of bag or pouch doesnt have to be eggs):

We're doing a tree planting ceremony for our Earth Day wedding. It's complicated though, because you have to keep it alive.

I know this isnt totally different than a sand ceremony, but we are using grandulated wax.  Same wording as the sand ceremony and can use it later as a candle.  I was able to find unscented colored wax.

Where did you find the colored wax, that sounds much better than sand!  We are doing this with both of us and our two children and I am so afraid of sand flying everywhere...

My FI and I are doing a handfasting.  It's typically associated with pagan/Wiccan ceremonies, but has also been used as Christian for a long time.  I sew/crochet and I plan to make our handfasting cords on my own.  Plus, it goes great with our medieval theme :D

I like that it symbolizes unity without dissolving the two identities into one.  I might be overthinking it, but it's all personal preference.  As far as a long explanation, I'm just going to include a quick description in the ceremony script and include the longer one for the program, where guests can read about if/when they like.

This is what we are doing. If you are involving God in your wedding, it might be an idea. Our wedding is also outdoors and I didn't want to deal with candles or a sand pillar getting dusty post-wedding.

We went with the classic unity ceremony: wedding vows.  Our theme was tried and true, "we're getting married."  It worked for us.

I had read about the box and wine idea.
I thought it was cute to have this box from your wedding day to open at a future anniversary, or if the "road gets bumpy".
I think we are just doing the traditional sand thing, although I'm getting ideas from the other brides too! :)
