DIY Flower Question

Where did you keep your flowers? Did you find a big fridge or were they fine just at room temp? Also, how soon before the wedding did you assemble them?

I went to downtown flower district and got a super deal. When I got home I put them in buckets added water and sugar. I made sure to have the air on in the house yntil night fall. They still looked fabulous the following day.

I did my flowers a few weeks ago and considered it a huge success. After we cut the cake, DH made a really cute speech thanking my parents and saying how beautiful all the flowers were since he knew how hard I worked on them. A few tips: -Go down the week before and order your flowers. We were lucky enough to find a vendor that ordered almost everything for us so the flowers would be fresh (some of the gerber daisy vendors receive their orders on Monday and are still selling the same flowers on Saturday). The person we found spoke good english and also took credit cards. The English part was important because we didn't want any mess ups since we ordered 200 dozen flowers! My parents called when they were on their way to pick them up and they had already put them all in buckets we were able to keep (which was huge), and they were on a cart. They also helped take the cart to the parking garage and load everything! -Some vendors are willing to cut you a deal, some aren't. We were buying 750 gerbers and were shocked that some vendors weren't even willing to take off 50 cents per bunch. -Park at Moskatels and buy something inside. They'll validate your parking. -We picked up the flowers the day before the wedding. I was home getting all of the aquafoam prepped in the vases as my parents/relatives went to pick up the flowers. -We put out painters tarps in the living room and cranked up the air conditioning. They looked great still even days after the wedding. -It was a great way to save money, and I got exactly what I wanted so I wasn't disappointed in my flowers. If you want the name of the person we used or have any more questions, let me know. I'll get back to you on the candy too - I just want to weigh it.

It really depends on what kind of flowers you are using.  Tropicals don't mind higher temperatures and don't require a lot of refrigeration.Roses as long as they are well hydrated can last over a week.  A big fridge is ideal.  Some flower shops are even willing to rent a space in their cooler for you to keep your flowers if you have no place to put them.  Another option is put them in a room that will not have a lot of traffic and run the air conditioner on full blast.

Mrs. V - I would love the name of the vendor you worked with. The biggest problem I'm running into is because we live at the beach we don't have A/C. I think I may have to take over a friends house temporarily or look into renting a florists' fridge space. Has anyone actually done that?

I don't think you'd probably need to worry about renting fridge space. What type of flowers are you looking at to work with? That would possibly make a difference. The vendor in the flower mart is called Villa Growers. I can't find their information at the moment, but if you look on the website for the flower mart, you'll probably find it there. They're on the opposite side of the street from Moskatels (where we always parked so we could get validation), and if you go through the entrance on the left, they are the vendor right on the left side when you walk in the door. I would highly recommend them as they saved us lots of time, money, and stress! Let me know if you have any more questions!

awesome, thanks! We're planning to do dahlias, mums, and maybe ranunculas. I'd love to also have peonies if they are still in season at the end of the month. I think their pretty durable so maybe I'll just store them at my friends house who has A/C. Thanks for the parking tip. I always pay for parking so that's sooo good to know!

I think that ranunculus are in season in the spring. I don't remember seeing any when we were there a few weeks ago, but I wasn't exactly looking for them either. A few vendors did have peonies, but they looked really fragile (maybe since it was the tail end of their season???). I would have loved to have light pink peonies as well. I LOVE dahlias! I was going to have my bridesmaids each carry a dinnerplate dahlia from a farm up here, but didn't think I'd have the time to go pick them up. I have dahlias and peonies growing in my yard :)

Please tell me what you do for your dahlias in your yard? I bought 2 and they looked great. I repotted them in larger pots and then they started looking really crappy after a few weeks so I thought that they may not be draining properly so I put them in clay pots in stead and then they seriously just shriveled up and died! So said! I love the dinner plate dahlias. I'm thinking of just floating 1 on the top of a vase filled with limes instead of doing big bouquet center pieces. But you said they didn't have any downtown?
