The quote we got for the very same thing (12 cans and set up) was around $3l for LED lighting and I can rent them for $228.00

Thoughts?

Hey there!  Saw your post on the E board.  I used diyuplighting for my wedding on Thanksgiving weekend and loved them.  We really wanted uplighting but pro services were quoting ridiculous amounts that were just not in our budget.

Set up is pretty quick and easy; we didn't have access to our venue (a museum so we had to wait til closing) until about 3 hours prior and my brother set them up with no problems.

I liked them for all the reasons you probably saw on their website...easy set up, LED so they didn't get hot or use much power (and my venue was a stickler on a lot of things but they ok'd these just fine), you can program the RGB to get a more exact color (we just used the standard pre-programmed purple), return shipping is included, and they are affordable.

Let me see if I can find a pic of our reception hall.

We are utilizing this company for our October wedding and the price can't be beat, so I'm glad other people have had success!

We spoke with one lighting company who came out to our venue and then gave us a proposal and a blue print of their lightling plan. They wanted $80/light (labor charges are killer)...so we've taken that blue print, tweaked it a little, and ordered a package from DIY lighting.

Great minds think alike... we have a meeting with a guy who told me that LED lighting starts at $2500. My plan was to see exactly WTH costs so much (a) and (b) try and recreate it myself.

Kimberly,

You'll be happy with them I'm sure.  It really was one of the easiest parts of our planning.  We ordered just 3 weeks before the big day; we had pretty much given up hope on uplighting at that point and then I found their website.

We called to make sure they were in stock since it was so late and the girl H spoke with was really cool.  Got an immediate email confirmation after ordering, another email when it shipped, had the in-laws pack them back up and ship them (we flew in from out of state), and that was it...done!

I'm a theatrical lighting designer, and ANYONE can manage doing their own uplighting. Super, super, super easy peasy. The guys that charge $500+ to come out and do this for you are totally ripping people off.

Go for it! You totally can't mess it up :)

This was the seal for me. If I post a pic of the room do you think you could tell me (round about) how many lights I should reserve?

Here's one:

I don't know the exact dimensions (I can probably find the info online but I gotta run soon) but it was large room in art museum; pretty decent sized.  This was with only 10 lights.  We probably could've gotten a couple more but we were being cheap. :)

ok so this diylighting.com is the greatest thing I've ever seen and I will totally be looking into them also!

but in regards to what you said... I actually emailed a couple of uplighting vendors and one of them told me he had been to my venue before and recommended 16 lights... maybe you could try emailing some places to see if they spill the beans?!?

Sure! A picture of the room and a rough size estimate and I'd at least be able to make an educated guess :)

Tip:  You're going to need to tape down the cords with gaffers tape.  We were searching everywhere for it but home improvement stores do not carry it.  You can find it at music stores, like Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc.  And I think H spotted some at Best Buy after the wedding.

Production Advantage has really good prices on gaffe tape, if you don't mind ordering it:

I am so excited to hear about this!!  On another board, one girl is renting out the ones she bought that use LED lights and I don't think you have to plug in at all.  I will check out both!  On that board I posted that the lighting company I had a consultation with quoted me $1136 for 10 lights and a monogram on the dance floor!  Geez.  I don't think so.  I almost gave up hope, our wedding is overbudget and we are STRESSING.

Keep in mind this trick requires different lights- Gobos (the metal disk that makes the monogram) only fit into certain instruments. Gobos generally cost anywhere from $14- 50, and can be more for something custom.
