Hi ladies,
I know this isn't exactly DIY related, but I trust your judgement so I'm asking about something I have no clue on: Beer.
Sorry for the long post, I am so overwhelmed by this that if half our guest list weren't big drinkers I'd just have a dry wedding reception!
I don't drink much but I know most of FI's family does and that they can be pretty heavy drinkers, so I want to make sure that I have some for them. I come from a non-drinking household so I have no idea what kind to get or how much. We are thinking about 120 people will be there (full guest list is at 145)
I know FI and his brother will drink Blue Moon every once in awhile and I've seen Corona at his parent's house. Do you think just having those 2 options will be enough?
His parents have also graciously bought us 2 cases of wine (I'm thinking we may need to buy more though since not everyone is like me and nurses one drink all night) for the reception from a small local vineyard, so guests will also be able to have a glass of wine if they like.
If possible we'd also like to do a Signature Drink, and have it be the national drink of Brazil, where my family is from. I have a feeling it will be too labor intensive for our bartender to make though since it involves muddling limes and sugar.
What do you think? Too much, not enough? We have to bring in all the alcohol to the venue (they don't have any on site), so I want to make sure we have enough since once they run out of alcohol, that's it.
Any input is appreciated. I just feel so lost on this one!
Sorry for the long post!

I can tell you, I like beer :o) I think that you can accomodate mostly everyones beer taste with 2 beers. However, you mention 2 beers that are pretty particular in taste. I would at least swap out 1 and go with a more mild, lighter beer. Blue Moon is definintely heavy so you will not go thru as much of that. The Corona is a lighter beer but it does have a specific taste to it. I like Coors (yes, any "real" beer drinker will tell you- "that's not real beer" Lol, but I'm ok with that) my fiance likes Amstel. When we have parties, we compromise and get kegs of Miller Lite. I do believe beer tastes different coming out of a keg and it's usually more economical so take that into consideration. This works for us but certainly, everyone has their own taste. I think you have to let your fiance guide you on this one and get his input since it sounds like he's got a bit more experience and should have a better idea as to what his family/friends will like. Good luck!

I'm a beer snob, but it has been my experience that heavy beer drinkers aren't as particular about their beer as those who only have one or two. I agree that you should ask your FI what he thinks his family will enjoy, but also keep it in your budget. "Real" beers are more expensive than things like Miller and Budweiser. You could always start out with a keg or two of the pricier, better tasting beer and then switch to the cheaper once that's gone. The more people drink, the less they tend to care about the kind of beer they're drinking.

Here is what we are bringing in for 140 guests, most of which are moderate to heavy drinkers:: 1 keg of Dos Equis, since that is a more expensive beer 12 cases of Bud Light (which we can keep the leftovers so we are overestimating) 8 bottles of each red and white wine 1 huge vat of margaritas that will pour spout over ice to be on the rocks.
We wanted the vat so it would be quick and easy to have a specialty drink. I think a specialty drink that requires muddling might back up the bar quite a bit, and no one will think twice to have a quick specialty drink.
It's simple for us to overestimate, like I said, since we are keeping all of the leftovers. Hope that helps!

I am also a beer snob- but most of our families are not. Our venue has beer and wine, we just have to choose them. For price reasons we are likely going to do one local beer (Asheville is Beer City afterall) and probably Bud Light or something for the rest of them. And we will definitely have a Pinot Grigio (my families fave) and a red wine that FI will pick out. So pretty much four choices. The city we are getting married in is still semi-dry so no alcohol - except for personal flasks ;)
As far as how much to choose- that depends on the guests. Most of mine drink wine or beer a bunch so we will likely need a lot. But I haven't honestly thought about it because the venue sells it downstairs in a shop and they have plenty.

Thanks everyone for the input. I just got off the phone with our venue and learned that they actually don't allow Kegs or cans, so any beer has to be in bottles (so much for keeping costs down, lol). Guess I'll have to talk to FI and see what he thinks. All he's told me is "if there's beer, my family will drink it. Trust me, we won't have to worry about leftovers", lol
@Iconoran, we are getting married close to Golden, CO (where we grew up), so maybe I will get some Coors. We're having a bunch of other things locally grown/made (food, wine, favors), so that might fit right in! :)

We are also having two beer choices - Guiness (which is a "speciality beer" and very heavy) and Spotted Cow, which is a lighter beer. There's a bit of an inside story on the Guiness and it's pretty much the only beer that is consistently in our house so we definitely wanted to have it at wedding but also realized that it may be a bit too heavy for most. Spotted Cow is made by New Glarus brewing, which is a Wisconsin brewery, and I just like it. It's also one of the few beers that my mother will drink.
We're red wine fans, and I will have a variety of reds - probably one type each of Cabernet, Merlot and Petite Syrah and one type of white. Most of our friends are primarily red drinkers, so that's why we're going more red-heavy. I think most groups tend to be the other way, though, so you might want to go half and half or have more white than red.
We are not doing any other alcohol, because other than a few "wine snobs" and "beer snobs", no one in our group is a really big drinker. We've got a guest list of about 50, and almost a quarter of that is kids. We're not big hard liquor or mixed drink drinkers (except vodka - I love vodka), so I'm also thinking about what's going to be leftover and making sure that it's actually something we want to consume.
We haven't decided on amounts yet - but I'm going to err on the side of too much because leftovers aren't going to be a problem.

My FI brews his own beer and is a beer connoisseur, and we will still be having at least SOME generic beer at our wedding (Bud Light and Miller Lite probably). I'd say to be on the safe side you should provide at least three different kinds of beer. Like PPs have said, Blue Moon is a very flavourful specialty beer that not everyone will enjoy. Most guests will be accustomed to attending events where Bud Light or Miller or PBR or Coors is one of the only options, so they'll be more inclined to drink that over other beers they've maybe never heard of?

We're most likely doing Spotted Cow and Guiness as well. :) We'll also be doing one red and one white wine, and a specialty drink (which we still haven't decided on). Don't forget to have plenty of soda/lemonade/iced tea (at least a few different options) and water for the guests who don't drink.
I agree with PP...although I like both Blue Moon and Corona, they have very specific tastes that not everyone will like. I would suggest getting a "regular" beer (like Miller or Coors) and then one "special" beer. I think that will give your guests plenty of options.

Do you have any BevMo stores near you? They can help you with choices and estimating how much you'll need. A friend just had a wedding and was able to rent kegs from them and bought cases of wine.

FI and I are big beer drinkers. We're having Amstel light (the only decent light beer IMHO) and Brooklyn Lager, plus red and white wine and a signature drink, probably electric lemonade since it's easy and we have to bring in all out own liquor.
What about doing a drink using cachaça instead of doing a mojito? Lebloncachaca.com has a ton of recipes that look delicious!

Thanks for suggestions, I'll def. talk to FI and see what he thinks about those beers. :)
We're actually planning on having traditional Caipirinhas as our signature drink, which is basically cachaca, lime juice and sugar muddled together. It's our fave drink and a nod to my latin roots since it's the national cocktail of brasil. I've had it mixed with vodka instead of cachaca at restraunts before, but it's just not the same to me. I'm all for the original version! :)
