Quick back story: Dad's sister has always been sort of antagonistic towards me. She has been a little better in recent years, but generally speaking, she takes passive aggressive jabs at me, my mom, my mom's sister whenever possible. I'm very close to him, as was she until my mom came along (and they had me). I suspect that could be behind it but don't really know.

She has been really gung ho and enthusiastic about hosting a bridal shower. I really am uncomfortable in her presence and not looking forward to accepting such a gift. My SIL/MIL offered to throw me one and I'm more close with them, actually. If I simply say no thank you, she will not let it go. My mom suggested I tell her that as much as I appreciate the thought, that they offered first and I want to get off on the right foot with them. That seems reasonable, but given her tendency to speak out of turn and general passive aggressive nature I can pretty much count on her saying something douchey to them at the wedding.

So WWYD? How would you say it?

Your mom is wise. And your SIL/MIL would probably be okay if you say "Hey, guys, just a head's up, my aunt is crazypants. If she gives you crap, smile and back away slowly."

I love the use of crazy pants :-) Ideally I wish she would not say/do anything stupid at all, but I don't have any control over this.

Exactly. You can only control what you do. And anything you do as sort of damage prevention is what is needed, by the sounds of it. I would recommend saying something along the lines of what I`m saying, as you said that you`re close with FSIL and FMIL, and they`d probably see it as really funny.

LittleMiss is wise. I agree wholeheartedly. Also, how sweet of your in-laws to throw you a shower :)
