kids gone crazy!!!

I am considering having a candy bar at my reception in place of making individual favors.  My concern is that a number of the kids that will be attending the reception have been known to raid the favors of all the candy (have seen it first hand at at least 3 weddings in the last two years) and for some reason their parents do not seem to find a problem with this.  I dont want to tell the parents how to raise their children but I also dont want to have to stand and guard the table.  How should i go about telling the parents of these children how i feel without makign them feel as though they should leave their kids at home?

  • Just don't have one then.

  • I feel like a candy buffet is perfect if you have kids who've been known to raid favors -- then they can all they want to themselves!

  • I don't understand - you're concerned that the kids will take more than their fair share and the adults will be mad?  They won't be, I promise.
  • You should assign someone "candy table security" just in case.

  • substitute ex-lax for chocolate on the candy buffet.  They'll learn.  :)

Seriously though, I don't think it'll be a big deal.  When I got married the first go around, we had little roses made out of candy and disposable cameras.  The kids stole all of the roses and took all of the cameras.  Not one single adult complained.

If i were the guest, i'd be a bit miffed at the bad parenting and I'd be a bit bummed for the bride and groom...but I wouldn't think twice about missing out on my share of sugar.

[QUOTE]If you're that worried about it, have the candy buffet brought out for the last hour of the reception.  Less time for them to take all the candy. Or you could just not worry about it and let them enjoy the reception all hyped up on sugar.

    I agree.
  • This is a non-issue. This is almost like saying you're worried your party-hardy friends will raid the open bar. It's what kids do. As long as they don't start throwing candy at people and breaking stuff, what's the harm? Guaranteed, they'll burn that sugar off on the dance floor!
  • I would agree with what the PP said in bringing it out in the last hour of the reception.  You could also have some sort of godie bag type thing for the children and give them more than enough to keep them occupied than you won't have to worry about the candy bar so much.

Also, adults may complain that people aren't watching their children but I doubt they will get upset over not getting candy.  They will see that the effort was there on your part and at the end of the day its not a big deal.

  • We're going to have tons of crazy kids running amuck at the reception and I'm kind of really ok with that.  I think it makes weddings so much more fun, unpredictable and REAL.  Let kids be kids, you know?  Otherwise, you shouldn't invite them.

Sidebar question: What have you guys seen at other weddings that IS fun for kids?  Coloring table, crafts, games, etc.

  • If it is going to bother you if the kids raid the candy bar, then don't have one.  This isn't something that you should lose sleep over.  I don't mean that in a harsh way at all; I simply mean that if the kids taking the candy is going to drive you crazy, then make it easy on yourself and don't have one.  Then, you won't have to worry.

I was at a first birthday party recently where there were several tables set up with a million coloring books and a sh!t-ton of crayons, and nearly all of the over-3 set spent most of the party at the table (the under 3s didn't really seem to "get" the coloring concept and mostly just chased each other in circles for the party).  My vote is for coloring.

So you think weddings without kids running amuck are fake?

I knew you'd say that jill (can't blame you; that one drives me batty)

But if we're focusing on grammar today, to be fair she did say it made her wedding more real, which would not then imply a wedding without kids running amok was fake but instead less real.

Edit: Which is kind of true given that kids do, in fact, often run amok.

    And Jill, calm down.  Cheezus.
