CN: Yesterday, the women on a local radio show say they would never vote for a woman for president because women are "too emotional" and other countries would not respect us as a nation. Interestingly both males on the show said they would vote for a female.

Obviously this had me fired up. Lots of callers had nasty things to say about this.

As an update, today they tried to redeem themselves by saying they wouldn't vote for a female right now, they would if they saw a candidate they liked one day. They just have yet to see a female candidate they like. This is different than what they seemed to be saying yesterday.

I think it really depends on the woman.  I would never automatically vote for a woman as president, strictly because she has ovaries, and I think it's ludicrous to discount a woman automatically for the same reasons.

Oh no, I'm not saything that either. It was just that yesterday, it seemed like the women were saying there could be an ideal candidate, great foreign policy, great economic plan, etc, but they would write that candidate off if it was a female, because she gets PMS and wouldn't command respect. I think those are dumb reasons.

I think it's kind of insane to suggest that other countries wouldn't respect us.  Angela Merkel, anyone?  I'm pretty sure she leads Germany, which is one of the strongest countries in Europe right now.  Oh yes, I'm sure she and her fellow EU folks would be completely likely to respect the US less if we had a female president.  Because women are clearly too emotional to lead countries.  Obviously.

I seriously cannot take the widespread ignorance.  Cannot.  Take.

Sex and race should not be the deciding factors on who you vote for.  The character of the individual is the important part, not what's between the legs.

Hillary Clinton has been very successful as our Secretary of State. She commands plenty of respect as our face  and voice to other nations and, oh, she has a vagina.

This doesn't surprise me at all. There are plenty of self-loathing people out there and women can buy into bullshit gender norms just as much as men can. It's sad, and hopefully we can get over it as a society eventually.

Amen. They also argued the country isn't ready to handle a woman as president. Yeah ok. Sure some people would be less than thrilled, but hey we have that now with Obama being African American/multi racial. Whatever. You're never going to win over everyone, but it's just sad that race and gender still affect some people's opinions so much.

Their argument to this was she reports back to a man, so that's why she gets respect.

Wow. I think this shows just how ignorant these radio as*hats are about politics. The Secretary of State is far more powerful that just reporting back to the boss.

The emotional thing pisses me off. Every time I go to my boss with a problem (from something as simple as asking if we have a holiday off or not to reporting something that was stolen from my desk), he always tells me that I need to stop being so emotional. And anyone who knows me, knows that I'm rarely emotional (at least in front of people). I think it's his way of brushnig me off and making me look bad, especially since in every review he says the same thing, I'm too emotional, even if I haven't talked to him in 6 months.

So yeah. Anyone who uses that excuse, I automatically lose all respect for them. Being a woman doesn't make you inadequate due to some ignorant pre-conceived notion of being "too emotional." <---not me being emotional, just making a statement

Me too. It's fine if those women feel THEY are too emotional to run a country, fine. I am too. But don't make a sweeping generalization that all women are not capable of thinking logically.

I also want them to think about the oh so perfect track record men have set being President of the United States. Since you know, they have never done anything controversial or wrong while in office, in a wide range of categories. =/

Are they so flawless? No, because they are human. As are women.

Sure I'd vote for a woman if I felt they were the best person for the job. People boggle my mind.

Sesh, your boss is ridiculous and inappropriate. I really hate to pull the sexual harassment card, but I think he's doing it.

This made me miss Melissa.

The whole idea that "other countries wouldn't respect us" is so moronic.  I didn't hear the show this morning, but I read some of the comments online yesterday where people were pointing out how many countries have female heads of state.  (Not just western Europe.)

Anyway, it's sad when men are sexist.  But sexist women make me crazy.

Seriously. It's mind-boggling to me when people think this way. I still believe that's why Obama got the nomination over Clinton. (I'm not an Obama-hater; I just still think she would have been so much better than him, but of course no way to prove that one way or the other.)

Meeee too. Never really had a problem with Kristin before this, other than I think her and Wendy sound indentical and I find both of their voices annoying. I can't stand the way Wendy says "Atlanta" during every traffic update. She sounds so stupid.

I'm pretty sure North America is the only contient that hasn't had an elected female head of state, so the comment about losing respect is ridiculous.  Pakistan had a female head of state in 1988!  Iceland currently has an female Prime Minister who is openly a lesbian!  I think the time has passed for the "women can't be leaders" thing, other somebody better tell the 19 elected female heads of state they can't do a good job because they're "too emotional".  Sheesh.

Kristin did something else that pissed me off, but I forgot what.  I've thought Wendy was an idiot for years.

I really think the show has gone downhill since Melissa left.  I think it's on the way out.

Oh, to argue against the already existing female heads of state, they claimed that being President of the US is "the most stressful job in the world" (not saying I totally disgaree) so the fact that other countries have had women leaders is not the same thing because they aren't as big/influential/awesome as America (this I do not agree with).

They also said that the other countries who are being lead by women are not necessarily in the best shape in various aspects. She did not tackle Germany but said "Look at Argentina."

My biggest issue is, what's wrong with being emotional? Let's be real. We're people. As humans we have emotions. I get the point is the fear that someone will run the country with emotions, but isn't that what every senator/representative/person in politics does? They get people to vote for them using EMOTIONS. They have political, social, and emotional platforms that draw people to vote for them. Thy prey on people's hatred for abortion, love of god, disdain for formal government. All emotions. So it's not just women that do this, considering most of the people in congress are male.

This is a very good point. I think they feel that this is different because it's a campaign that can be planned out, not something decided on the fly. I think they are more concerned with women making rushed decisions with their heart rather than their minds while on their periods or something stupid like that.
