I need some advice about how to put my cat on a diet.

I have 3 cats and one is becoming quite the chunker. I'm afraid he's going to start having hip/back/joint problems if I don't do something. The other two are normal weight. We just set a bowl out and let them eat whenever they want. It never seemed to be a problem until maybe summer time I noticed the chunker was eating like it was going out of fashion.

It seems to be pretty obvious that the chunker doesn't have any self control anymore. I know the obvious solution would be to feed him twice a day and a controlled amount. But how can I pull that off?

This is where I see the problem. My other two cats won't just eat when you put food in front of them. They are grazers so they'll eat a little bit every now and then. When I've given them medicine in food in the past I have locked them in seperate rooms but the two healthy cats won't eat much of their food.

If I put food out only twice a day I'm afraid my healthy cats will go hungry since they may not want to eat at that time or they'll eat just a little bit. What should I do?

I have the same problem with my dogs. I have two, and one is a grazer and the other one could eat all day.  I've started feeding twice a day instead of leaving food out, but I stay and watch them eat. Cuz my chunker will start eating out of the other bowl when hers is done. Not sure what to do otherwise!

Do your cats have to jump to get to their food?

Our 24 pound cat (in my sig).  Stayed 24 pounds long after we put her food on the counter.  But lately she hasn't been going up there as much.  I have no idea what her motivation is, but I think part of it is she just doesn't want to jump if she doesn't have to.  Between not eating as often and jumping up, she is down to about 21 pounds.  Still overweight, but even if she wasn't fat, she'd probably be at least a 17 or 18 pound cat.

My big cat is 22 pounds, I feed her once during the morning and once at night, yes she howls like she is dying but my vet assures me that she isn't. I also got her a harness and leash...it's a small dog she's outgrown the cat ones and try and take her for walks outside in the back yard.

i had one cat that needed to be put on a diet.

I went with the Science Diet mega-diet food for the whole crew.  My skinny kitty was supplemented with snacks and "regular" food to keep him at his ideal weight.

I just had to do this exact thing with my 3 dogs last month.

What we've done is give chunker her food in a room with a closed door (she's on a special diet food from the vet) and then give the normal-weight dogs their food in the kitchen.  For the first few weeks we coerced them (all 3 dogs) to eat on schedule by mixing some beef stew into their food.  We weaned them off the beef stew gradually and they have now figured out that they need to eat when food in put down beacuse it's getting picked back up in 30 minutes.

Maybe you could do the same thing by mixing in some tuna for your normal weight cats?

Can the chunker jump? I used to put high calorie food out for my skinny cat who could climb like crazy. My chunker couldn't get to it, so she just had to eat what I put in the bowl on the ground.

Well, I'm no vet, but I'll tell you what works for my cats. We have 6. Yes, 6. Some are grazers and some hoard the food & gobble everything in site. The exact same problem happened to us where the grazers didn't get to eat as much because the others ate everyone's food.

We feed them twice a day. Dry in the AM, wet in the PM. An occasional small amount of dry for the skinny one in the afternoon. Although they may complain at first, they'll get over it. There is no way that they will starve because of waiting 12 hours for food.

Also, stand there an watch at first. Is the chunky one pushing the others out of the way? That's what mine did. We give them all separate plates. We feed the fast eaters together in one room (still separate plates), and each slow eater eats separately. They are in each bathroom until they finish it.

They will learn that they better eat it all because there isn't anymore coming until night. You may need to separate them if the one is hoarding. This can make the skinny cats nervous & make them eat even less. Good luck!

My dog was the same way, and now he is happilly a twice a day eater.  You may have to drastically reduce the amount they get,  I used to just fill my dog's bowl, which I measured later to be 1 and 3/4 cups.  He now gets 1/2 cup twice a day.

Put the food down.  Wait about 30 minutes, and if they havne't eaten yet, pick the food up.  Don't put it down again until the next feeding time.  Again wait half an hour and pick it up, and wait until the next feeding time.  If they don't eat, don't worry they will when they have to.

In the morning my dog wouldn't eat, and I left it for 45 minutes just in case.  At dinner when I put it down, he ate it instantly.  Never again did I have a problem with him not eating right away.  Because of this, he lost 8 pounds, when he only weighed 27 to begin with, and is now at his healthy weight.

This is what we do. Skinny kitty eats on the bar and has food available at all times and fat cat eats on a low table and gets food twice a day.  (The low table is so the pup can't get her food).

The fat one pushes her bowl around and mews a lot at random times, but we know she's just being dramatic.

Is the fat cat significantly larger than the other two?  If she can jump, maybe you could put the food in a box with a hole big enough for the grazers to get in, but not for chunker.

Some good advice in here thanks. Might be something to try with putting the food up but I hate them being on the counters and such as it is... I'd hate to train them that it's a good thing. The chunker gets plenty of exercise because they're outdoor/indoor cats so it's pretty much him just over eating. The tuna mixing suggestion would work great for one of the healthy cats but the other one is picky and will only eat purina cat food. I know she's crazy! I think I'll start just doing the twice a day 30 minute thing and see how that goes. Thanks guys!

Haha, so true.

OP, I feel you with not wanting them on the counters. I don't like that either. I'd imagine that if you did that, whenever they feel hungry they'll jump up there.

I'd also talk to your vet to see if it's ok to put the chunky one on a low calorie cat food if all of this doesn't work. Really, if you're feeding them the correct amount twice a day, they shouldn't be plump.

I know that this may be difficult to find out, but could one of your neighbors be feeding your cat when it goes out? We had quite a few alley cats in our yard who made their rounds & hit up 3 houses on our block for food. They were strays, yet very chunky because they were eating 3x the food. If s/he wears a collar, I'd think someone would know that this cat belongs to someone, but you never know. Maybe there's a little grandma out there who feels bad & give them food? Just a thought.

It's definately a possibility but I know most of my cul de sac pretty well and don't think they would do that but I could very well be wrong. However, I do think the main cause is that I just let them eat whenever and however much they want.

I used to have multiple cats and what I did in the past was what one of the PPs suggested - low cal food all around and the skinner cats got extra "snacks" to supplement.  Now the lone kitty eats on the counter in the laundry room because otherwise the dog eats his food.

I've seen ads for special dishes that have covers that will only open for the cat wearing the collar with the correct chip in it. No idea if they're worth it, but a potential solution for cats who eat different food/different amounts. It would keep chunky kitty from being able to eat the other cats' food. Or the box idea - I think that's awesome. Although I'm picturing the cat trying to get in and getting stuck like the dog at the beginning of the Volkswagon super bowl commercial.

You might be able to make your current grazers twice-a-day eaters, as others have said.

The other solution would be to separate them during the day while you're at work. We do this because I have to measure how much one of my cats eats, and I would never get an accurate measurement if we left food out for both of them. Put the overweight cat in one room/part of the house with food and litter (we keep on cat in the bedroom - she normally sleeps on the bed and looks out the window all day anyway) and allow the others to roam the other part of the house with food. Let the overweight cat out when you get home, and 30 minutes later, pick up the food.

One other thing...I'd check with my vet.  It sounds like chunker maintained a healthy weight until pretty recently.  If his eating habits and weight really changed inexplicably and quickly, there could be a medical reason underlying it, like an endocrine condition.  Just a thought.  Hope he gets back to a healthy weight!

Do you measure their food? My cat has lost five pounds simply by me measuring his food, rather than H filling his bowl whenever it got empty.

I have three cats, one of which is overweight (he gained a lot of weight when I left him with my mom when I went away to college). So, now, we measure out their food and feed them twice a day - at 10AM and 5:30PM. It's actually to the point where they'll go stand by their dish at almost exactly 5:30 every evening as in "It's time to eat, Mom."  Now, oddly, the overweight one is the one who usually has to be coaxed to eat.

Plus, you'll save money because you'll be buying food less often since they're not grazing. It takes some time for them to get used to it, but once they do you'll notice a difference.

I didn't read other posts so sorry if someone already said this but my FI has a 10 year old dog that was quite chunky and would eat ANYTHING put in front of her.  I adopted a shelter dog abotu 6 months ago and once that happened, I seized control of feeding the animals.  I switched them to a really high quality diet, which means they need to eat less than cheaper foods.  Initially his dog ate immediately and mine was a grazer so I had to feed them in sepearate rooms to ensure one didnt' eat the others food.  Now they eat at the same time and I greatly reduced the amount of food that FI's dog was eating and they are both perfectly healthy.  Basically I would consult with a vet and also the higher quality the food, the less quantity they need.
