Hello! :)

My alma mater is having a race in mid-April (about 8 weeks from now) - a 5k and a 10 mile.  I ran two 5ks (last fall) after completing the C25k program.  Some of my college friends would like to do this race (10 mile) with me, but they're pretty serious runners.

I admit I don't love running, but I love accomplishing a race.  When I look at the race site, they discourage walking since we only have 2 hours to complete.  Right now, I'm running about a 13-15 minute mile, which would put me over the 2 hour limit.

Which should I do?  Should I try to do the 10 mile?!

TIA!

Why would you set yourself up to fail?  I mean, I think it would be possible for you to get your time down enough to finish in the two hours by then if you really busted your ass, but I don't think it's worth the pressure.

I say stick to the 5k, and look at a different 10miler if you'd like to give the distance a shot.

It might take you a little bit longer than 8 weeks to work your way up from 3 miles to 10.  You risk overtraining and injuring yourself... (been there, done that, got the crutches to prove it, and I don't reccommend!!!)  I would stick to the 5k and just go out to do your best & have a little fun :)

Thank you for the honesty!  My friends keep saying I can make the 10 mile, but I don't want to be at the back of the pack... or spend the money and have to get my a** carted to the finish line.

BTW, where was your sig pic taken?  It looks familiar!  You look beautiful in your dress, btw :)

Trying new distances is a really good thing, but I'd hate for there to be so much pressure on you for your first race at that distance, KWIM?  I definitely think you should find and train for a different 10miler if you want to though!  You can totally do it, just not worth risking injury in 8 weeks :)

Thank you!  That was at Riverside Park in La Crosse, WI.

I agree with J&K. (Oh man, I wish I had 20$ every time I've typed that.)

Why not take the opportunity to try to actually race the 5K--I mean, run it for time rather than just for fun? That way, you can still feel like you're challenging yourself, but without the whole "I don't know if I can finish within the time limit" aspect. You can easily add in some speedwork without increasing your mileage, and it might be nice for you to have an acheivable goal.

Thank you, ladies!!!

I definitely don't want to get injured, especially about a month before our wedding.  I think I'll still do the 5k and push myself, like you said.  This was very helpful.

:)

Good advice from the ladies above. Maybe you can find a 10K and work toward that. I think it's a really good distance jump from a 5K.

This. 10 miles is so very different than 3.

I wish I had $20 for every time someone's typed that too! ;)
