Thursday New Member - cleanse??

Ok trying my best to follow the instructions!

I have been lurking for a day or so...and I was very confused by the invite wording postings too haha.

I'm sure this has been brought up in the past at some point but I didn't see anything recent...anybody use a cleanse before, how does it work and is it safe?
I keep seeing "green tea cleanse" and "acai berry cleanse."

You DO NOT need a "cleanse". Your body is perfectly capable of cleansing itself, it is a waste of time and money and can be dangerous.
  • Welcome!

Really, there's no medical need for a cleanse.  If you ate like crap, and then you start eating well, the nasty stuff will just naturally work it's way out.

Cleanses for weight loss will only rid you of water weight (or fecal matter) that will just come back once you start eating and drinking like a normal person.

My suggestion?  Don't waste you money.

  • If I could make a suggestion, you might try simply going meatless (if you're not already) for a few days. For some people, focusing on colorful fruits and veggies and rich, whole grains is a really great way to transition into eating better. And since it's a little "lighter" way of eating (or can be), it can really push you into improving your diet and focusing on whole foods (re: not packaged/over processed) in your diet.

Hope that didn't come across as preachy! It's just a thought.

P.S. Plus, these types of foods are high in fiber so you can get a "cleansing" effect if you're not used to it, LOL. Laughing

  • Cleanses are completely unnecessary. (Disclaimer: I did a quick check with my nursing textbook before writing this) The human body is incredibly efficient at removing waste from your body through the liver and the renal system. I know several people who have cleansed for various amounts of time,  and they all said they felt horrible after the first day, which isn't surprising since you're basically starving yourself by only drinking whatever the cleanser is. Your body only has so much stored carbohydrate, and then your body starts metabolizing protein. The byproducts of protein metabolism have nitrogen in them, and are actually toxic, so your kidneys have to work harder to excrete it, and you end up with a negative "protein balance." In about a week your body switches to fat metabolism, which may sound like a good thing, but too much fat metabolism also  makes the kidneys work harder. So basically, the cleanse defeats its own purpose, sends your metabolism out of whack, and once its done has to shift it back to normal again. CN: Don't do it!

Agree with pp...they're not worth it.  Fruits and veggies are absolutely the way to go!  Good luck!

  • I have done a cleanse before, but not a green tea or acai berry thing.

I dropped sugar, caffeine, and meat. I focused on grains like wild rice and quinoa, lots of fruits and veggies, and learning new sources of protein. I loved it!! It was hard at first, but it turned out great. It helped me make better choices with food when i was done the cleanse. These green tea cleanses and stuff, focus on you eating nothing but that dont they? That is terrible! You still need to fuel your body and get all your nutrients, that is something you want. I wouldnt buy a "box" cleanse or anything like that. I am actually getting ready to do another one.

You can find details of cleanses in: Jae Steeles: Get it Ripe. or You are What You Eat (i forget the author)

  • I agree with darkling. I did a raw veggie clense for one day.  I have to say, the next day I had a lot more energy.  But then I started adding lentils and beans te next day.  The third day, I added bown rice.  Since mid-January, I have lost 8 lbs, and many inches.  I cheat a few days a week, meaning I allow myself things I know I want, but can't have normally, like a cheeseburger (without fries), pizza, etc.  I am still losing.  But, I have found that for me, it is about portion control, and more meals throughout the day. I had pasta (whole wheat)a few nights ago, with pesto and shrimp, loved it, so let myself have more than my normal 1 cup, and was crazy full!!!  Smaller meals thruoghout the day, no white stuff, and less cheese, has helped me lose on a contiued basis.  It is about changing your lifestyle, not necessariy going on a diet.  HTH!
  • Fully agree with everybody. The body is an amazing this and is capable of cleansing itself if you give it the proper ingredients. My roommate occasionally does cleanses where she eats a lot of greens to help cleanse. She agrees with this pH miracle stuff (can't remember the author)...I personally don't agree but she would definitely feel better after that initial cleanse for a few days of just eating what the earth gave us.

For me, that is what this lifestyle change is all about. I have quite a bit of weight to lose, have lost 10-12lbs since I started this time (depending on the day) and can't wait to keep going. I can't think that I'm on a diet, I am changing my overall diet and the way I live my life. Eating more fruit and veggies, going mostly whole grain with very little "white" grains, more water, and more activity. The body will appreciate any and all efforts made to better your life!
