DH and I are going on a Carnival cruise out of Tampa in May with stops at Grand Cayman and Cozumel. I am So excited!! And looking for some excursion suggestions or suggestions of things to do while on the two islands. Also, for those of you that have been to Cozumel did you feel safe? DH is actually the nervous one about Cozumel! I think it will be fine.

I've been to both places.. Grand Cayman is AMAZING and probably the most popular activity is Stingray City.  Cozumel is fine... if you're downtown there isn't much to worry about but the beaches aren't "great" but they have good snorkeling and scuba diving.  I was slightly less than impressed in Cozumel but Grand Cayman is gorgeous!.

If you stay with the cruise shore excursions, you will be just fine.  Watch your wallets!  In Cozumel I recommend going to Chankanaab Park.  Wear bathing suits!  Here is a link:

Shopping is expensive in both places.  The silver jewelry is cheaper at home than in Mexico, especially at tourist prices.  If you do buy silver jewelry, make sure it is stamped 925.  Otherwise it is a Mexican silver alloy. Don't buy anything on the street.  Usually I warn people of the cruiseship's recommended shopping sites.  These sites are recommended because they pay a percentage back to the ship line.  However, if you really want a silver souvenir, in Mexico I would say to stick to the cruise ship recs.  Do not believe one word of anything a sales clerk tells you!  Unfortunately, taking advantage of naive American tourists is a national pastime in Cozumel!
Other than getting pick-pocketted or scammed by a  sales clerk, you are safe in Cozumel if you stick with a group.

FI and I are also doing a cruise for our HM with stops in Grand Cayman and Cozumel.  I haven't been to either place, but I asked some friends for recommendations.

One friend, who vacations in Grand Cayman regularly, said that 7 Mile Beach is gorgeous and he highly recommended it.  We definitely want at least one relaxing beach day, so we're planning on going there.  Other friends also recommended Stingray City, but neither of us are really interested in that.

As far as Cozumel goes, some ladies on here recommended Xcaret.  I looked it up online and it sounds like a lot of fun.  However, some reviews I read said that you can't possibly see and do everything in one day.  So we decided against it and we're planning on an excursion to Tulum to see the Mayan ruins instead (something we've both always wanted to do).

If you haven't already done so, check out Cruise Critic.  There are tons of great reviews and photos, as well as boards similar to The Knot.

I have family that lives in Cozumel and was just there for 14 days.  It was beautiful and there is lots to do.  Please do not stick to the cruise ports.  They will tell you it is unsafe to go elsewhere, but Carnival owns the shops and restaurants at the cruise ports and wants you to spend your money there.  Take the time and go downtown, you will not be disappointed.  The food is absolutely amazing there, so if you eat there, go to a local place, not a tourist joint.  You will not be disappointed.  Don't tell any merchants that you are there with the cruise.  They will gouge you, so make sure if you want something that you haggle the price!  We walked all over the place in Cozumel and never once felt unsafe.  The locals are very friendly.  Just be smart, like you have to be anwhere.  It's actually a pretty up-scale island in terms of what they have there.

Cozumel has the best diving and snorkeling in the world, so if you are into that, I would for sure go there.  Another great excursion is to Tulum.  It's about an hour and half away.  If you are looking for a beach, Playa Del Carmen is 30 minutes across the boat by ferry, but it is very busy as it's mad tourist/resort area.  Cozumel is a lot quieter.

My sig picture is in Cozumel, at the town center.

Chankanaab!  Xcaret if for families with kids.  http://www.cozumel-tours.com/chankanaab-park.htm

Thanks ladies for all of the reviews and suggestions!! I think that we are going to go on an excursion to the dolphins and Chankanaab! It looks like a blast! What should we bring with us when we get off the ship? should we bring our passports, ID's etc? or leave them in the safe?

Thanks!
