low budget honemoon

We are getting married on October 17 2009. Coming up here real quick! We want to go on a honemoon and only have baout $1,000 to spend. Neither one of us have our passports so we need to stay in the country. Any ideas will be great!

Re: low budget honemoon

• What part of the country are you in? Maybe there is a local city to explore, a lake to enjoy nature near by, or a beach to hang out in the off season? The point of a honeymoon is to decompress from the wedding hooplah and focus on eachother for a bit before returning to the daily grind. It needen't be expensive, or even far away. You could do something small now, and if it really is your dream to go on a real trip, make it a goal to save up for it by your 5th anniversary or something Congrats and lots of luck!
• Sorry if our posts pushed you away from New York Niagra... I'd just hate for you to come here and find out it sux! Anyways, I see that your in Michigan. What about traveling to Chicago for a weekend and stay at some awesome hotel and just enjoy the city? It might not seem too exciting if you go there a lot but it could be an option. hth!

• I recommend signing up for weekly travel deals from travelzoo and kayak. They often have incredibly low priced flights and vacation packages that would fall right in your budget! Good luck!
• We are going to Las Vegas for 5 days 4 nights.  I got a good hotel and air fares.  My total $819.  The hotel deal includes free buffet, 3 meals daily, each day for 2 ppl.
• based on where you are at I would vote for either Chicago (although it can be a bit expensive sometimes), St. Louis (very underrated yet a really wonderful city) or Vegas (which always seems to have cheap flights/cheap rooms.  Another option would be to find a B&B maybe a few cities away from where you live! Good Luck!
• Upstate NY is nice and will be beautiful in October.  I'm partial but fall anywhere in New England is gorgeous.  Maine or Vermonth are especially pretty.   Or check out some National Parks... lots to do and generally more on the inexpensive side.  Good Luck!

• What about Traverse City/Leelanau area? It is beautiful in the fall and they have a ton of bed and breakfast places and wineries. Good Luck :)
• We've had a good time in Boston and Washington DC - those are great cities if you like sightseeing and exploring different neighborhoods. We're also from the NYC area so we're there all the time, but if you've never been then that would also be nice. There's a ton to see and do in New York. Could you go to Disney for a few nights? If you like sports (football and hockey are in-season in October, for example), see if your favorite team has an away game and arrange to get tickets in that city. See the game and then spend some time in that area. We're thinking of going to Chicago, San Francisco or maybe somewhere in Maine. Friends of ours have highly recommended Charleston as well. Maybe you could go to the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone National Park, or how about Napa Valley?

• I went to Yellowstone for my honeymoon and I loved it.  The only reason that I didn't recommend it was because of the time of year.  I went in June and it snowed twice.  They told us they have 3 seasons - July, August and winter.  I have a feeling it would be snowing in October.  But I think everybody should go see that place at some point in their lives - it was unbelievable!

• If you get an enhanced DL it is cheaper and quicker then a passport and you can head to toronto or Niagra Canada...do not go to Niagra, NY it is horrible...if you do go with the falls stay on the Canadian side. HTH!
• Have you spent much time in the UP? It is beautiful this time of year. There is lots of hiking and waterfalls. You could do a tour of the penninsula and see the soo locks, do the pictured rocks tour at munising, spend some time in marquette, go up to the porcupine mountains and/or isle royal, and see the paulding light at watersmeet. There are lots of little inns on lake superior that probably have off-season rates!
• Where do you live? If you live close to Florida, New Orleans, Texas or California, chances are the two of you could take a cruise for your honeymoon. Some Royal Caribbean or Carnival cruise lines offer great deals on standard cabins (like $280 for a four day cruise). If you live with in driving distance (even if its a full days drive) the two of you can probably do a 4-5 day cruise for under 1000 including taxes and fees (and maybe even gas to drive to the port).  Everything would be included except drinks. Another great suggestion is a honeymoon registry. You can sign up for one at any of the many websites that host them, or you can have any travel agent arrange one for you. This way your guests can give you $ towards your trip (perhaps a room upgrade?), or they can purchase things for you like excursions or spa treatments to enhance your honeymoon. :)Good luck!
• I agree with erina...Traverse City, Petosky...any of those places are gorgeous.  FI and I are always going up to TC for a weekend getaway.  We love it and each time we only spend $300-$500 for 3 days depending where we decide to stay.We love staying at these placesGrand Traverse Resort and Spahttp://tinyurl.com/ycmdghfat this hotel I would stay on the 9th and 10 floors facing the bay but as for a room i the middle of the floor and down though because the views are much better.  They usually have good deals when seasons change.  We always stay in the winter time because that is when the deals are best.Sugar Beach(hotel) or Grand Beach(condos)http://tinyurl.com/ye3je67We enjoyed this hotel too.  It is right on the water with great views.  We usually get the king size room with the tub in the room to see the views.  If you call any of these places and tell them you're looking to book a honeymoon, I'm sure they can hook you up with some deals.  I would pick Grand Traverse over Sugar Beach for the honeymoon.  Oh and if you choose Grand Traverse make sure you make reservations for aerie restaurant!  It is amazing food with great views.  Watching the sun go down is awesome!  With cocktails, appetizer and dinner is around $100 or so...but it is so worth it!  =)GL!
• You live in Michigan, so you can go anytime, but wow am I in love with South Haven, MI.  What a gorgeous little town it is and it reminded me so much of Maine!  Chicago is always nice.  This time of year, its a little chilly and it would be great to spend a couple of nights at the Palmer House Hilton or The Drake.  I love them both.  We live in Central Illinois, getting married next May and are going to Cedar Point and Cleveland to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
• I'm from Michigan too. My cousin is getting married Oct. 16 and they are just going up North to view the "fall colors" They will be in full bloom then. Most hotels and B&B's aren't that expensive up there and may be offering deals to do the horrible economy in Michigan. Travel has been way down thsi year. My recommendations are the Lelanu Pennisula (lots of wineries, if you are into those) and Traverse City or Macinaw Island. :) Good Luck!
• I second Boston. (Cool) historical sites, rich cultural neighborhoods, numerous amazing museums, the Atlantic Ocean, and a sort of old-world charm. (If you like your city streets laid out in a nice grid, you're out of luck). Public transportation is reliable, everywhere, and relatively decently priced so you don't want to rent a car. It's less fast paced than New York, more affordable, and less aggressive. There's a ton of shopping, too. If you're looking for a more leisurely trip away from the hustle and bustle, I can't speak strongly enough about my love for Portsmouth NH. The foliage is turning in New Hampshire, there's a small town Main Street charm to Portsmouth, with great local food. There's a few breweries in the area, again the city's right on the ocean, the Kittery Outlets are close by, and if you know where to look, even though it's a small sleepy city, you can find anything from organ brick oven pizza to a roaring karaoke contest midweek. If you're interested in more information let me know, because I can give you more in depth information You can fly into Pease, or Logan is a little less than an hour South.
• We are going to Traverse City. The shops are open even in the fall and winter. Hotel prices are great in the off season, we got our sweet (includes lake view, fire place, jacuzzi tub, and kitchen) for $370.00 from sunday to wednesday. The same sweet runs about $350.00 a night in the summer. We go up there every fall and enjoy the shops, casinos and dining. Good luck with your decision.

• Go to a city you've both been wanting to go to (Chicago, New York, Boston, Washington DC). See the sights, grab some good food and enjoy the time together!! Best of luck!!
• We chose Ocracoke Island, NC, it's STUNNING! and the rental prices are AMAZING! promise me you will check it out!!!
• We're from Chicago and I can definitely help you save a TON of $$ by giving you options OUTSIDE of downtown.  You could easily do 5 days here in $1k.We love Savannah, Ga and it is still beautiful in the fall, weather-wise.  You can do it on $1k if you're up for a road trip.A lot of airlines are doing the $79 or $99 sales these days - just pick one of the destinations on sale and go from there.  Once you're booked, I'm sure the knotties on that local board can help you with hotel recs.
