Re: What would you value my ring at?

  • Decent sized would be difficult to tell because it's directly related to cost.  However, a jewelry store isn't going to give you the time of day on cost for that because they really don't know/don't care because it's CZ.
  • $100 seems low.  The stone itself is probably worth very little, however most gold settings cost at least $200.  How much jewelry is worth is a tricky subject because the jeweler may have meant that they would give you $100 for the ring if you tried to sell it to them.  This is because they would still need to make a profit if they were going to resell the ring.  Hope that makes sense.

  • A diamond should come with some certificates as well as a receipt.  Diamonds are certified and graded, and that's where they get their value.  Many are also tagged with a microscopic ID number so that you can prove it if your diamond is switched out.  Does he have this certification info?

I've got to say, a person who works at a jewelry store should be able to tell the difference between a CZ and a diamond under the lupe.  If they told you it was a CZ, they are probably right.
  • WEll I can say that not all diamonds come with a certificute stating size, cut ect. Most of the time when you buy a preset diamond or a lower caret the diamond certification doesnt come with, also certain stores like kay don't provide certification unless you ask for an appraisal form because you plan to insure the ring (I know kay for sure says we don't do appraisals unless your taking the form to an insurer)

Now a lot of times if you take your ring to a different jelrey store they'll say a lower "insured" price because they're trying to pull your buisness in they would rather you buy an expensive engagemnet ring from them rather than just resizing your ring, they will also say the price they would buy your ring in at as a trade in (normally half the price they would sell it at and then you have to buy a peice that is worth about double what theyll give you as trade in)

As the other ladies said you should goto an appraiser which is sepret from the industry, aside from appraising. If it's a CZ it's no big deal the setting obviously would have to cost him some cash since it's 18k and also think of it as you two are always connected since he wears thesecond in his ear.
  • I have to add in also like PP mentioned, not all diamonds come with a certification.  You have to actually purchase a diamond that has been certified.  Yes, diamonds are pregraded, but to have it certified, it's slightly different process, and then the cost is added into the cost you see on the sticker.  Honestly, getting a cert. when you buy doesn't really mean anything as it is highly subjective, and it depends a LOT upon which gemological group they went through- some are better than others.

When a diamond is certified, it goes through I think 5 gemologists working for AGA (or whomever), they all grade it according to what they see for clarity, color, cut.  When those come in, the group "throws out" the highest and lowest grades, and takes the average.  So, your diamond may be worth more or less depending upon who grades it that day.  It's a tricky business.

Anyway, OP, I hope you guys get this figured out.  If it turns out you've been bamboozled, just take it as a lesson to be more knowledgeable next time.
  • Just popping in to agree to get it aprased.

Also Kohls and most diamond stores have a simple divice used to test if it is a real diamond. I worked at Kohls in jelewry and know this.

We bought mine on the internet and the first thing I did with spare time was take it over to Kohls and test each stone to make sure it was a real diamond. Color, Clarity and such didn't matter to me it looked great and I loved it.

I hope you get it figured out. Because if he bought "diamond earrings" years ago and now finds out they were fake I would be pissed at the place he bought them from.
