Cocktail hour food question

FI and I are having a very personalized wedding - our decor involves the occasional flower made out of sheet music (he's a musician), we are having his sisters read a poem in both Spanish and English during the ceremony (I'm a Spanish professor), etc. One of the things we were thinking about was including little cards at the hors d'oeuvres stations and on the trays for the passed ones explaining who picked them and why. For example, FI is obsessed with all things teryaki so we're doing teryaki chicken pops whereas I chose empanadas with Spanish filling because of my study abroad experiences. Would including those little cards be tacky? I think it might be nice for those of our guests who don't know us as well to get to know us a little through the food we picked, but I don't want it to seem like we'll self-obsessed. Thoughts?

Re: Cocktail hour food question

  • I don't think it's tacky at all, but I just think people won't care.  When I'm at a wedding and the hors d'oeuvres are being served, all I'm thinking about is that I'm hungry and how quickly can I grab one.  It doesn't much matter to me if it's your favorite.
  • I do not think they are tacky.  However, I do not care how or who picked the food and will not appreciate the card.  Doubt I would even look at it at all.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Wouldn't care about them.   I think most won't read them or, if they do, they'll slow up the area near the stations.  :D

Ok, thanks for the feedback. I guess I'm one of those detail-oriented type people who would totally love this, but I can see the point that most guests probably won't notice and/or care. One less thing for me to work on!

  • Hi.  I think that some people will care, but not everyone.  Maybe the place to elaborate on your menu and reception decor is on your wedding website.  On our wedding website we have a page called "Wedding Design Details."  We explain here (briefly) about various details we have chosen, such as our cake decor, and our table sign choice, and how these play into our theme.

Another idea would be to do a explanation on the back of your menu.  Maybe front side menu, back side 'thank you' and 'explanation' but you know, worded such that you see fit.

Our menu is more of a 'reception program,' and I can relate to your design to elaborate and be detail-oriented- I am the same way.  On the back of our menu is our reception meal-time i-pod playlist.  On the inside is the dinner menu (left) and dessert menu (right).  On the front is the signature cocktail and appetizers menu.  You could do something similar, and intersperse or segue out details.

People will read it or they won't.  But some will, I'm sure.
