I am having a wine themed wedding reception. I was so excited to see a card holder in the shape of a barrel to be used as our card holder.

I received my barrel and have no use for it. While the description does list the opening is 4.5 inches, I simply assumed that it would fit wedding cards. I did not research (shame on me) that the average greeting card is A7, which is 5 1/4" x 7 1/4". Other envelopes, which are baronial envelopes, constructed with a deep pointed flap and diagonal seams. Traditionally used for formal business announcements, invitations and greeting cards. The most popular size is 4.75" x 6.5"

I have tested multiple cards (12) and only one fit through the slot on the wine barrel. When I e-mailed to figure out how this problem could be fixed, I was basically told that the hoops could be cut, but it would probably cause the barrel to break. They also mentioned: "The description of the slot is clearly noted and I just measured an average size card (Bday, wedding, congrats card) and it clearly fits.  I am sorry all of her cards are too big for this”.

So, now I am basically out of over $200 for a purposeless barrel. While the company claims to pride themselves in customer service, I felt that was clearly untrue. I am pretty easy to work with, but they were unwilling and basically said "too bad for you".  I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BARREL OR COMPANY TO ANYONE. While they claim they have never heard of anyone else having this problem, I just think you should be aware that it can't really be used as it's described....unless of course you want all your guests to have to bend the card in half.

Company is Wine Barrels For You, e-mail address is dslinking@gmail.com
Order at your own risk or make sure you do A LOT of research prior to placing your order as they don't seem to describe the use of their product well.

Why is it their fault you didn't thoroughly research the product before ordering 200 of them?  Why didn't you order just one?  Why can't you use different paper?

I am not sure where you got the idea that I ordered more than one. I only have one barrel and it cost over $200. I do understand that I am at fault for not bothering to research the average size of an envelope, but their website states:

"Consider using this Wedding Barrel for Guests to send their best wishes! Check out our Testimonials and order yours today! These 20 liter/5 gallon barrels have a slit in the body center for envelope gifts.
The slit is 4 1/2" long. A 6 inch "hinged back door" allows for easy access to your wedding gifts."

The slit size is listed (which again, shame on me for not researching envelope size); however, they imply three times that it can be used for enveloped gifts.

I'm not sure what you mean about using "different" paper, as people will come with their own cards?? I think we must be thinking of different products.

Either way, I just wanted to let other people know, prior to buying this product, that it can't really be used for cards, unless you want your guests to have to fold all of thier cards.

I see, I misunderstood.  Are you going to try to use it anyways or return it?

When I read your OP, I thought you meant escort card holders.  In which case, cutting paper to fit it would make sense.  I see what edielaura was confused.

You could try reselling it online, or repurposing it.

Could you adjust the hole size or mount it to a larger container underneath so that it is more suitable as a card box?  If it's wooden (making an assumption here) can you just cut the hole so it is larger?

They won't take the return because they listed the dimensions so they "aren't at fault". Their production people said that if we cut the bungs (metal rings that go around the barrel) the barrel will break. I am planning on taking it to my dad to see if he can cut the bungs, but only about 1/4th on each side. If it makes the bungs weaker, at least I won't have to worry about it getting damaged while in the shipping process and we'll just have to handle it carefully. Most of the bung will still be intact (they are 2 1/4 inches wide) and it will add 1/2 inch total, making the slot 5 inches so that it should fit more envelopes. The others (A7) will just have to be folded.

I'm just glad that my dad thinks he can work on it, otherwise, like I said, I would have a purposeless barrel. I don't want other brides to make the same mistake.

As far as reselling it, I don't think I could recoop the cost because I would feel awful if I sold it under the assumption that it could hold cards. If my dad can't make it work, I will just have to "repurpose" it as a rather pricey decoration...and will still need to figure out what to use as a card holder. I will try to sell it after the wedding, but again, I won't be able to charge that much for it as it's basically just a prop.

I just looked it up online... I think it's totally doable to make the slot bigger.  Use a jigsaw or sawzall.

How about cutting a slit in what should be the top but is of course the side since is is laying down and not upright. Does this make sense? The side is the top and the top is the side, the slit is cut on the "top" right now so maybe cut one on the "side"

This is what I was going to suggest. I would be hesitant to cut the bungs. With the pressure they are under I would hate for one to pop as a guest was trying to insert a card. Just turn the slit to the back or put a sign/fabric to cover the original hole.
