Not really sure where to post this, so I figured here might be good. I'm getting married on June 16th and we're having only about 50 people are invited. We're getting married in a very large ballroom

Not really sure where to post this, so I figured here might be good. I'm getting married on June 16th and we're having only about 50 people are invited. We're getting married in a very large ballroom in a hotel with way more tables and room than what we really need. There's pretty much only family invited with a couple friends thrown in (we don't really have many friends), and everyone gets along. Do you think I should still do a seating chart or do you think it would be ok to let my guests choose their own seat?

Is your group used to open seating? There might be confusion if they aren't used to that.

Well, at my brother's wedding and my cousin's wedding, neither had assigned seating. There was a sweetheart table and everyone else chose their seats. My cousin had long rectangular tables and my brother had small round tables, but both were fairly small weddings. We'll have a sweetheart table, too.

I'm a fan of assigned seating (at least tables) even with small groups. If you have open seating, there's no way to ensure that your parents don't end up at the table with your friends, while your brother is stuck with Fh's cousin, and your FH's grandparents are with your aunts and uncles.

I'd take the 1/2 hour or so to assign tables and make sure everyone is with the people they'd enjoy being seated with.

I'm a big fan of assigned tables, but if people are used to open seating, it might not be a big issue to stick with that.

I like assigned seating too,  It is just a way to make sure your family gets to sit together and friends sit together too.  You don't have to assign seats you can just assign tables, that is what I plan on doing.

I would at least take the time to assign tables.  At my brother's wedding they choose not to and it was pure chaos. Since the wedding party and immediate family stopped for pictures on the way from church to reception hall, all of the people that would typically be seated towards the front or at least together were scrambling for seats.  They had reserved a table for themselves and their party but my parents and I got stuck sitting in the back with a random family and their 3 small kids...seriously, I was miserable.  it is worth the 30 minutes!

I just think assigning tables is a gracious thing to do for your guests that shows you truly considered them while you planned your big day. It won't take long.

That said, it's a small wedding and I'm sure it would be fine not to if you think your family would find it odd or for some other reason you're opposed to the idea.

We are struggling with this too. I'm planning to assign groups of tables and let people pick from there.
