Mortgage Registry

Is anyone doing this? We really want to buy a house in the next two years (after the wedding and graduating law school), is this tacky to register for?

    Simple answer - yes.

We didn't register - but I knew my family gives cash gifts anyway. I had DH's Mom spread it around there side. We got a a pretty hefty sum for a down payment. It could definitely work with the right tact. Don't let people dissuade you if you don't need your fancy linens and china yet.

yea, it's tacky. we registered for only practical stuff, and not a ton. our guests who wanted to give us more than casual dishware and other random house hold goods gave us money.my opinion on mortgage registries is that they're about as classy and subtle as sending out deposit slips in your invites

Yes it absolutely is tacky. If you just want cash, don't register for anything. Word will spread that you are trying to save for a house and that is what you would like money to go towards.

I don't agree with the no registry. Some people really like to give a physical gift, so you should at least have one small one. You could always choose a place like Bed Bath and Beyond where they let you return items from the registry for cash, but I wouldn't just avoid one all together in hopes people will give you money straight out.

LOL...well I guess that is the answer then. I thought it might look tacky too as we aren't looking too. We do need other things for the house, but I just wanted people to know that if they gave cash it would be for something like a house. I had read several articles on the knot that said go for it, but I tend to old fashioned in this department and wanted to err on the side of caution. Thanks ladies!

my FI wanted to do the same thing, but i posted the same question here and got the same response. TACKY. i felt it would be tacky too but with banks, the knot , and yes, even Emily Post said it would be ok i had to ask. we decided that we're going to register for small items (vases, picture frames, candles, and other non-expensive gifts that we could use since we already have most of what we need) from Bed, Bath, & Beyond and Macy's. Then we're also going to mention that gift cards from either Target or Lowe's would be appreciated since we are looking to purchase our first home together in the very near future. this leaves a wide variety of this for people to choose it they choose to get us a gift. hope this helps!
