Snarky Brides

40% of my bridal party is preggo!!

Babies! Babies! Babies! lol
2 of my 5 girls are pregnant! One is my sister so i'm super excited about a new niece or nephew. On top of that, FI's sister and a very good friend of mine are also preggo. AND yet another very good friend is currently TTC, so i'm waiting on word from her any day now.

My first thought when i found out about my 2 BMs was to do the calculations, hoping that they wouldn't be due near the wedding because i just really want them both to BE THERE. Once i figured out that they should both have delivered by then and there was no chance that they would be in the hospital delivering on the day of the wedding i was relieved. Because i don't care if they are waddling down the aisle or just gave birth and have to go off to pump before the ceremony, i just want them up there with me on my special day.

I will admit that i am disappointed that they (and the other preggos) will miss out on my Vegas Bach party because this is my sister and one of my closest "roll dawgs" and it really won't be the same with out them, but i'll live. (my other BM/sister won't be able to go to my bach party either because she won't be 21 until 2 months AFTER the wedding. So that leaves only my MOH and BM/cousin from the BP attending my bach party.)

So now i'm not sure what to do about the dresses. Should we be in a huge rush to have the buy them now before they start showing? or should we try to guess what size they'll be after delivery?

for a timeline reference...
Wedding is 7/9/11
BM (sister) is due 6/28/11 (but is having a c-section and may go in a week early)
BM (friend) is due 6/20/11
FSIL is due 6/15/11
and other friend is due some time in may

so the ones that are in the wedding and will need a dress will only NOT be pregnant a few weeks before the wedding. So we will have to be choosing their dresses while they are still pregnant. Any experience with this ladies?

  • Why would you rush to buy them before they are showing? That won't change the fact that they are pregnant and will need larger dresses.

I had a pregnant bm. I let her decide what dress to buy. The dresses that my bms got had a maternity version and I told her I didn't care what she picked as long as she was comfortable. That was about as involved as I got.
  • No experience whatsoever, but I think I'd be tempted to keep it as flexible as possible by buying complimentary dresses off-the-rack from Nordstrom or something.  That way you can put it off until much closer to the wedding, when your bridesmaids will have a better idea of the sizes they need.

    Hey what's a "roll dawg"?
  • edited November 2010
No experience with this, but it kind of sounds like fun. I have a feeling that a lot of pre-wedding talk will involve commisserating among the three new moms.

One thought: given that three of your five bridesmaids are pregnant (that's actually 60%), your best bet might be just to let them wear black dresses - then they can get whatever in the few weeks before the wedding. Since you've got three girls to consider, that just seems like the most humane idea.

Also, I know it's your bach party and your dream and all, but if that many of my nearest and dearest were pregnant, I'm not sure if I'd have my heart set on a Vegas bach party. A nice luncheon followed by something relaxing might be a lovely wedding to spend time with your sister and friends.

  • NC - you should just let the bridesmaids figure out what they're going to wear on their own, perhaps?  Since two of them will be pregnant they might be more comfortable picking out a dress to wear that they'll feel good in.  KWIM?

  • Will they be dipping the babies in the Prego? Kind of like garlic bread or something?
  • Or - have them talk to the bridal consultants maybe?  I mean, sometimes they can be really pushy to get people to order dresses to make sales, but they have more than likely dealt with pregnant bridesmaids before and could give some good advice.

Ya, but they won't be pregnant for the wedding. So they'll be smaller, but who knows how much smaller.

I was thinking about going the coordinating dress route so that they can choose their own. But again, it will still be hard to predict how much smaller they will be just weeks after delivery.

Oops. I must have completely skipped the timeline. So, they will have already had the babies at the time of the wedding? If it were me, depending on how close the wedding was to me popping out the little baby dippers, I would just buy a size up.

Well at least for the first two, probably not that much.  Especially the c-section...she won't really be able to start working off that baby weight right away.

Actually only 2 are BMs (sister and friend) are pregnant. In addition to that another friend and FSIL are also pregnant but they aren't in the wedding. So it's still 40% of the bridal party. ;)
  • Buy those convertible dresses and hire the person that knows how to tie them fifty different ways.  They're only like, $300.

Sorry, I'm useless.  But I really want to talk to brides that used those.

I would suggest a wrap dress, or something that can be adjusted.  Guessing what size they will be is going to be hard.  Good luck!

Ah, I see. So the FSIL reference was a red herring. ;)

Well, even with that info, my advice pretty much remains the same. Either pick something simple, like black dresses, that can be figured out using off the rack dresses right before the wedding, or talk to the consultant at the bridal shop. She's probably seen this scenario before.

  • I hate to be a party pooper but I would not count on them being there. Even if she goes in for a C-section a week before her due date that's not a lot of time for her recovery or for her to feel comfortable leaving her baby for several hours. I also don't know if they would be comfortable (or if the dr would let them for that matter) taking a newborn to a situation where they could be exposed to all kinds of dangers.
