Does anyone work in insurance on SB that might have some insight on this? Any recommendations on where I should look to see if he's telling the truth or just trying to scare me into buying something now that I hopefully don't need for years to come?

This is medical insurance right?  Buying more medical insurance isn't going to change the price of long term care that a hospital and other medical providers charge. You'll just be better insured so that your out of pockets expenses are less. Do you feel like you need better coverage at this point in your life?  I'd take a look to see what type of coverage you already have. Compare what you have with what you feel you need and go from there.

I work in property and casualty, and now commercial risk assessment for insurance so if it was any other kind but medical I would have been able to help : (  and I live in alberta so no medical insurance here but what Koda said sounds logical and I would probably go with her advice.

I work for an insurance brokerage. We deal with long term care and life insurance. Is that sort of what you're talking about?

Not really the same. Long term covers the costs above and beyond what health insurance covers. Your health insurance  will only cover x number of days in a skilled or long term facility. Long term covers the rest.

Dot, long term costa are rising, but not that much. We are in the process of putting my grandmother in long term care, and I am sure they would have mentioned if it was going up 80% in a few weeks. I  am calling BS.

yes I meant long term health coverage not my regular medical.  I get my medical through work.  Cuyrrently I do not have long term health and my agent called and said he wants to talk with me about it because he claims that premiums are going up for this kind of coverage as much as 80% in March.  I think if this were a fact that we would have heard something about it in the new.  Any major industry that has an across the board 80% hike in prices would be news worthy I would think.

I'm going to meet with him and make him prove his statement but I think it is unlikely that I will buy now.  I am going to increase my life insurance though.  How much is enough do you think?

I know I'm really late to this but Dot, I absolutely, 100% call BS on it from my own professional standpoint.  Ask him for proof in that number, or literature to read that would support his "facts".  Like Alli said, LTC costs are rising, but they do not jump 80% in one month.  Also, shop around.  It's good that you're considering LTC insurance now but do your homework on this one and get second and third opinions too.  Also, try looking for a provider who does not use a proprietary product so they aren't biased in what they offer you.
