We're going to have someone come in and walk Emma during the day on a temporary basis.  I've got some feelers out to a couple places, one is an individual, the other is a company with about six employees.  What types of things would you ask them to decide who to go with?

Obviously we're going to get references and meet with both before choosing and if we get a weird feeling then they're out.

So far I've got:
- How long would you spend with her?
- What activities would you do? Walk around the neighborhood? On the greenway? Go to a park?
- Would she be traveling in your vehicle?
- Would she be walked alone or with other dogs?
- Would the same person come each day (for the company)?

What else?

How they discipline? I know my dogs are rowdy so I'd want to know how they'd handle that.

I know this sounds really obvious, but I'd ask if they carry bags to pick up the dog's mess. My mom hired a dog walker that didn't and they just left our dog's doo on the sidewalk. Our very nosy neighbor thought the dog walker was my dad because she recognized our dog, and actually called us to complain to him.

How would you deal with  ________?

Dog attacking your dog while walking.
Dog throwing up.
Dog escapes from leash.
Dog sit on walk and refuses to continue.
Etc. (whatever possibles you can think of)

In addition to yours:

How do they handle behavior issues?
How many (if any) other dogs will be walked with her? Big or small? Energy levels?
How would they handle dog-dog issues or emergencies?
Who would have access to your house (if you choose the multi-person one)?
Are their other dogs current on vaccines?

This is a VERY good company in your area (I think). I bring my pup to Camp Bow Wow in CT. They have a GREAT reputation & FWIW, tons of celebs use Camp Bow Wow for services, too. Tori Spelling was just tweeting about them =)

Also, do they give treats on walks? If so, what/how often? JIC they give something that upsets her stomach, so your vet can track.it.

Sidenote, there is the cutest puggle making eyes at me in my vet's lobby. Omgwant.

I'd also ask about their cancellation policy.  JIC you stay home sick or something and don't need the pre-scheduled walk.

That place looks nice, but I'm not driving 4 hours one way to get there Tongue Out

Thanks for the other link though!

ETA: okay so they do have a place in the right Carolina.  But their hours still won't work for us

Our dogs currently go to a Camp Bow Wow too, and they're fantastic! :) (and super affordable.)

Random fact for you.

Doggie day care would be the obvious answer to this.  But H can't get there before they close at 7, I'll be out of town, and we don't want to board her for the whole week.

I'd also ask about certifications or experience. When I write pet sitter sites, they are always adamant about pointing out any licenses or certifications, as well as emphasizing that they are pet owners and understand the importance of proper pet care.

A lot of what y'all've said has been part of what made us choose these people to contact.  So I'm feeling good so far. :)

ETA: if only they'd e-mail me back!  I feel like a beebee bride waiting on a vendor or something.

I asked my dog walker if she was insured. It's better to be safe than sorry!

Yep.

When I pet sat, I was bonded, licensed and insured.

You are a good dog owner.  I don't remember asking mine any questions!  I guess I probably did.  I know she picks up the poop (she even takes it with her to dispose of) and I know that she is comfortable walking my dog on her prong (thank God she can put it on her).  She even runs her sometimes which I love!

Good luck with your dog walker.  Maybe you can talk to someone else that uses the same one?
