So we have lived in this house for 3 years now.  I guess the guy that lived here before us owes a lot of money to many different places.  Somehow, these debt collectors linked our phone number to our address and they call everyday for him, sometimes 2-3 times a day.  It is all different people calling.  Everytime they call I tell them that he doesnt live here and to please stop calling.  We are also on the Do Not Call List.  The thing is, when I ask them for the name of their agency or to speak to a manager, they hang up on me.  The caller ID shows a private number or shows up as "800 Number Service".

Its really starting to piss me off and I dont know how to get them to stop.  Anyone else dealt with this before?

Do you need a landline? Honestly, we never used ours and we're paying for getting sales calls basically. If you could get by with just your cell phone, you could get rid of the number the collectors are calling.

I used to get similar calls for a Ruth Mylastname. I didn't know who this person was but debt collectors etc. kept calling asking for her or asking if I knew how to get a hold of her. They eventually gave up and just stopped calling. I don't know what you can do about it if they won't tell you who they are or where they are calling from.

Sorry I am not more help.

H switched his phone number about 2 years ago and apparently the dude that had the number was a habitual debt offender. H gots calls for "Joe lastname" all.the.time. Finally I had enough of it and reamed the one collection guy out, complete with screaming and F bombs and said if he ever called again, I would call the police and file harassment charges. I don't know if I could actually do that, but the calls stopped. If you turn into a massive raging bitch, they might leave you alone. :)

They have a list of his known former addresses on file.  They called directory assistance and did a reverse look-up for the address and got your number.  Common practice in debt collections.

Legally if you tell them that he doesn't live there they are supposed to stop unless they're given a new reason to think that he does live there.

If you can find out what company it is you can write a cease & desist letter to make them stop calling your phone.  I would also file a complaint with the FCC.

The funny thing is that in college I used to work for a Drs office doing debt collection once a week.  I know they cant call before 8am or after 9pm and cant call more than 2 times in one day.  But if I tell them its the wrong number, they are supposed to remove it and not call anymore, but they keep effing calling, and its not just one place.

Im tempted to call me Attorney Generals office. Maybe they can help?

We had this happen awhile back. They would hang up every time H answered, so finally I answered and they started asking about some loan. Turns out they were looking for H's ex-stepsister (she used us as a reference or something). When I said I wasn't her, the guy basically called me a liar so I gave the phone to H and he went off on the guy. They called a few more times after that but each time H answered and immediately said, "Stepsis doesn't live here and no, I won't give you her number. Stop calling," among other various language.

So maybe your callers will eventually give up as well. Or maybe you can google the 800 number and figure out where they are calling from. Sometimes other people are asking about numbers on message boards and you can figure out who it is.

Sesh- its been going on 3 years now.  I know that lots of debt collection agencies buy your debt at a super reduced price from your debtor and then tack on interest and charge you the full price, so im assuming its a new agency every few months.

You can also use the Telephone Consumer Protection Act to sue the debt collectors who call you. This won’t stop future debt collectors from calling, but $1,000 (or more) will make you feel better about saying “I’m sorry, but you have the wrong number” to any who call.

This probably won't work, but you could try.  Next time they call and ask for so-and-so, tell them he has a new number and give them some made up number.

Collection agencies are serious assholes, but it's kind of their job.

That website looks like it might have some tips on the laws at least.

That one may help too.

This is a good idea. Otherwise you could play the "he's unavailable, but can I take a message?" thing too.  Otherwise, maybe it could be worth changing your number.  The police can tap your phone in such a way that even unknown numbers still pop up  for them right? Honestly, I'd file a harassment claim if it would help.

I get calls for "Angelina" all the time.  When they call I usually say "who can I say is calling" or "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name? And what company are you calling from". Then once I've got their name and their company I go off on them.

You've got to get the name while they still think they've got the right person :)

I've also had good luck with "Thank you TheirName.  This is the X# time a representative from TheirCompany has called today.  Each time I've explained that the person you are calling for is not at this number and that I don't have any idea who it is.  I am also on the do not call list and have requested to be removed from this list each time.  This is the last warning before I report TheirCompany to the FCC"

None of that is a good idea.  Lying and passing them on to a made up number connects her in their file.  She can no longer claim she doesn't know the person or have a forwarding number.  Same with taking a message.  They'll never stop calling after that, they have no reason to.

A few years ago, someone kept calling my parents' house asking for someone with my same name. They wouldn't stop (and I didn't owe anyone money), so my parents filed a complaint with the local police department. They were told to call the phone company, and were given a special code to key in every time someone called. Within a week, it had stopped, as the phone company reported it to the police department, and the police department threatened them with telephone harassment if they didn't stop.

Maybe try that. It worked for my parents.

Edit: Same first and last name, but different middle initial.

I'm dealing with this crap too. Every day I clear off 10 messages for 2 people from the answering machine. If I pick up or call back I either get "You aren't John Doe? We can't talk to you." or they say I'm lying that I don't know that person.

This happens to us all the time. Our niece used to live downstairs in MIL's basement, so they keep calling us since our number is associated with the house. Sometimes the ID says Unknown Number, but if there is a number I call it back and keep telling them to take the number off the list, as she doesn't live here. I also tell them if they do not take our number off the list we will file complaints with the BBB and FCC. It took a couple calls to each, but for the most part they stopped.

I had a bank calling me about my next door neighbor's car loan.  They used the address directory to get my number, and called to ask if I had seen him recently.  All I would tell them is that I would give him the message.  He was very pissed that they had called me to get information about him, but it's completely legal to use address look ups.  He went into foreclosure soon after that and disappeared.

Yeah, it is crazy the lengths banks will go through. Apparently MIL signed for BIL's crazy expensive mortgage. Nobody knew about it until BOA called us asking for MIL or BIL. H asked what it was regarding and they said,"this is regarding a BOA homeloan with MIL as the responsible person and BIL as a secondary." H confronted MIL, but she continued to deny it for some time and called BOA and ripped them for calling us and giving us that info. Since then she admited what she did but we knew all along just by the info they were willing to give.

I'm late to the game here.  I had that happen, and I entered the 1-800 number in to google just for shiits.  Turns out so many people had been harrassed that they were posting tips on how to get it to stop.  I followed the advice posted (call and speak to manager at the collection agency, they even had the "inside line" number posted).  Voila, calls stopped.

I'm super late too, but the same thing happened to me, only people were using my former work private line as their fake number.  The collection agencies would leave messages, up to 100 per week.  I ended up calling back a bunch of them and telling them that they had the wrong number.  It usually worked for a short amount of time, although that same person kept giving my number to new agencies, so after a lull, the calls would start up again.

The best thing about switching jobs was leaving that cursed number behind.

I just thought of something as a huge afterthought.. if they refuse to tell you who they are, couldyou get your H to pretend he is this guy? There's no way they'll know it's not him, then they'd be able to tell him who they are and their number and stuff.. then you will know who they are.

I just thought of something as a huge afterthought.. if they refuse to tell you who they are, couldyou get your H to pretend he is this guy? There's no way they'll know it's not him, then they'd be able to tell him who they are and their number and stuff.. then you will know who they are.

They will NEVER leave her alone then. Bad idea.  Also, giving a fake number is a bad idea too.  Not only does it give the company reason to believe that you lied to them and make you look suspicious, but it also just passes the problem along to someone else, which is not cool at all.

I would google the number and see what comes up.  If you can track down a company name, then I would call the main number for that company and ask to speak with a manager.  If that doesn't work, try filing a complaint with the FCC.
