Well first and foremost, in the fake tan department, I'd recommend getting an air brush tan. Prices vary depending on area, but check the reviews, and you're likely to get an even natural looking tan. DON'T use a booth. If you don't stand and move perfectly, you're going to end up with blotches, and uneven areas. Drop the extra dime and have a tech air brush you.

Desert sun has actually advanced pretty well in the spray tanning department. I was extremely scared of being blotchy or orange, but it looked really well.

Make sure before doing a spray tan that you shave and exfoliate to get rid of dead skin :)
