Yeah - it stinks.  I just got mine renewed last year, so I was planning to keep it with my maiden (I'm hyphenating), since I missed the 1-year cutoff to have the name changed for free.

That's cute, Shauni.  I know you're asking Lia, but for me, I always plan the next trip either while I'm planning the current one, or while I'm on a trip!  We've got tickets for Paris & London in May, which I'm super excited about.

Ridiculous isn't it? I damn near had a heart attack when I looked it up. Mine is actually $110 plus the fees to take new pictures, so basically the same cost as a new passport. Then dumb me added up just how much its going to cost to get everything changed...passport, license, certified copies of the marriage certificate, whatever else, and its damn near $350! INSANE!

And in case youre interested Shauni, I'm going on a 5 day Bermuda cruise next year. =)

im jealous of all of you traveling over seas!!  right now we have a trip to rehobeth planned next labor day, then the following march 2012 we are going to key west, then the following year 2013 alaska.  then we can consider having kids.  unless we decide on more places we want to go before we have them...like all over europe, on a cruise through the caribean, hawaii, cabo...

I'm in the same boat as mushE - I just renewed mine last year, and missed the cutoff for a no-cost update by about 2 months.  Pisser.  We're not planning on traveling anytime in the near future, though, so I'll probably just leave it as is until we want to take another trip.

That's the price of getting married!  I don't travel much so I don't have a passport.  I'll need to get one soon because we want to go to Vancouver in the next few months.

I just got mine in April for the HM, so I'll get to change mine for free.  Not to rub it in or anything :p

We're already planning on going back to Cabo next year, so I might as well get mine done now.  Even though I'm nowhere near the one year cutoff (I got my passport 4 years ago), it still sucks paying for it.

Shauni, just take your (future) kids with you!  My sister and I got to go to a lot of cool places when we were growing up.  My parents even took my sister to Europe when she was 18-mo and bought a VW van while they were there, and we're hoping to do the same when DH has sabbatical (8 weeks leave) in 2 years.

I just got my passport renewed last summer and missed the 1yr cut off as well.  DH (Yay!  First time I've used that!) and I travel pretty frequently outside the US.  I plan to keep my passport in my maiden name for a while.  As long as you book your travel docs to match your passport and you don't travel to countries where visas and bank account information are required, it shouldn't be an issue.

mushe--my parents did that with us too.  BUT, we are flat broke and the concept of being able to travel ANYWHERE while also paying for the expenses of a child seems too crazy!

then again, the concept of having children at all seems too crazy!

I'm dreading forking over the money to get my passport and everything changed. Hoping the marriage license does take the 2 weeks to get finalized and whatnot just so I'll have at least one check under my belt to help pay for all this name change stuff.

FYI: you can book your tickets in your maiden name (passport name) and use it as your ID to get on the plane/etc. My aunt traveled around the world a few years after her wedding and had no issues with this.

I'm traveling to Ireland next March to visit my mom, but getting married in October. We haven't told her we're getting married and don't really plan on it. We're eloping anyway, but how do I get around paying for the passport since she will book it in my maiden name? If the plane ticket name matches my passport maiden name, is it all ok?
