I'm sure this has been asked before, so pardon me, but I couldn't find it!  I posted on Attire, too.

I live in Miami, my wedding is in Connecticut.  We're moving up there in May, but I'm not sure I want my dress to be in the backseat of my car for the 5 day drive we plan to take with several necessary overnight stops.  My parents are coming down to visit - once in May before we move for my FI's graduation and they're flying Southwest, and my Dad might be coming down next week for business.

Has anyone taken a dress on Southwest?  What was your experience?  Any suggestions?  Alternatively,  is there an airline that is better/more accomodating that I can suggest for my Dad if he comes down next week? How did it get through security?  Is there a better way you can think of to get my dress up to Connecticut?

Thanks in advance!

Cate! How's it going? How is all of your planning going for ya?

As far as taking your dress goes, I won't be much help to you. You travel all the time, you probably know better than any of the ladies here about that. Honestly, if I were you I would take the dress in the car rather than giving it to your dad. Your dress doesn't look like it would wrinkle at all.

Hey Nik!  Holy cow, your wedding is coming up fast!!!  I hope planning has gone smoothly.  Mine's about 100 days behind yours, and it's been easy as pie.  Minus, of course, the logistics of getting my dress up north!

I do have a lot of flying experience, but never brought something like this on a plane!  Usually it's just your standard suitcase, but this wouldn't fit in a carry-on suitcase (wouldn't want to zip it for fear of catching the tulle) and I wouldn't want to check it.  Perhaps I could vaccum pack it in one of those bags and then stick it in the carry-on?  It really is just a whole bunch of tulle.

One of the girls on here did the vaccuum packing thing and she said it worked great. Then had it steam cleaned when she got to Hawaii. Others have said that when the attendants see the bag they know it's a dress and offer the front closet. (That's why I thought it would be awkward if you sent it with your dad.) Other's have just sat in the back of the plane and once everyone puts their overhead stuff on they set it on top.

I've heard similar things about the closet, but heard that it is on a first come, first serve basis. Never thought of the vacuum packing idea though!

The place I bought my dress from is going to package it for me so it fits nicely in my carry on =)
