Hello!  I got engaged on Oct 22 and always hoped for a fall wedding so I got straight to planning!  Of course I didn't realize how expensive weddings REALLY are until I started contacted venues.  We finally found one in our budget and the only fall dates available are afternoon weddings (12-5p).  What are your thoughts?  It has many pros: ceremony outdoor, good photo lighting, not dark and dreary out, CHEAPER, so on so on.  My only con is that my family is kind of wild and likes to party (it will be open bar) but the party will be over by 5!  Is this weird?  Will people still have fun?  Have you been to a fun afternoon wedding... I'm hoping to have people follow us to a bar or something ha ha.  HELP!

I'm doing an afternoon wedding on 10/7/2012. Is your ceremony outside or inside? Are you getting married in Baltimore? I think an afternoon wedding is fine. The last 2 I went to were afternoon weddings and they were fine. Also, traditionally, nighttime weddings are more formal, which means more $$$$ you're shelling out.

If the concern is cost then an open bar is an unnecessary one.  I think an afternoon wedding is fine, but I can say from the ones I have been to, people weren't throwing back the drinks; so unless the majority of your guests (aside from family) are going to live it up between 12-5 then it may not justify having one.

If it were me, I would rather spend the money on getting the venue/time I wanted.  If having alcohol was an absolute must, then I would look into cheaper options than an open bar, maybe just serving beer/wine, or having a signature cocktail bc as you mentioned, you could always go out for an after-party later.

I think you also need to factor in the type of food your are planning to serve if you have an open bar in the afternoon bc cheese and crackers won't cut it if people are going to be throwing back the drinks.  I would keep researching venues (unless you've already booked this place) and check your local board for recommendations.  Good luck!

I think staying in your budget is much more important than having an evening wedding, and like you said, there are quite a few pros to an afternoon wedding.  As a pp said, people may not drink as much at an afternoon wedding so you may be able to save some money on the bar. People don't need to be trashed at 10pm to have an awesome time. Your wedding will still be fun.

I agree with JMAsh1078 that if it the concern is money then you can avoid open bar.....And spend that money on a venue.....Or you can have a semi open bar....Like you can serve first two drinks free of cost and then the charges apply on drinks after two.....

But I think afternoon time is perfectly fine.....I am also having fall wedding but in January time....because I love fall theme.....My timings are 3 to 9......But I have been in afternoon wedding so many times and as a guests it is fine with me....

Just think about the comfort of your guests only.....If majority of gusts are fine and comfortable with afternoon wedding then go for it....

I am also having an 12-5 reception in CT. I am also having an open bar with a pretty sizable "partying" group. My hope is that they will party it up and take full advantage of the open bar. After 5, FI and I plan to let the close family continue the celebration at our home. Because we will be newlyweds, I think it will be understood that we want some time to ourselves before the evening gets too late. Or I will politely ask my MOH to start the polite exiting process. Maybe ask for a few final toasts to wind the party down. I am sure everyone will have a good time.

My reception was from  2-6.  We had beer and wine available and served a lunch.  My guests liked it as they then had the evening to go out and do whatever.  I know other weddings had an after reception party if cost is not a factor.

We saved about $1000 having an afternoon reception, and got a head start on our honeymoon.
