My fiance and I are on a tight budget and dead set on making our own wedding food. We love the idea of a taco bar. Saves us money, a whole day in the kitchen the day before the wedding. And it allows us and our guests to be creative in creating tacos/salads. We're looking at about 50-60 guests at most.

We're having a rustic themed wedding. Very Southern, handmade, vintage. And it's in October. We love the Fall so our wedding will have a lot of Fall touches. To make keep the rustic feel, we plan on having tortillas and certain toppings in baskets, salsas in mason jars. Our wedding is also at 11 a.m. and we plan on serving the tacos at 1-ish.

For appetizers, I was thinking fresh fruit in waffle cones. Spicy sweet potato hummus & pita chips. Cheese straws. Jalepeno poppers. Any other ideas?

And we want mini pies (apple, pumpkin, blueberry...) in place of our wedding cake, since we're not big cake-eaters. And to drink we'd have apple cider, sangrias, sweet tea, coke and so on.

My only issue with the taco bar is that it may not fit with our desert. What do you think? Is there a way to add a Fall flare to our taco bar? Maybe add unconventional toppings to the bar? My fiance thought up a turkey dinner taco: ground turkey, stuffing, gravy. And have a menu wih different combos guests could try. Maybe cajun-spiced tacos with shrimp?? Maybe have shredded cheese served in a hollowed out pumpkin? If you were a guest would you enjoy this?

I'd love any advice and honest opinions. :)

My honest opinion is that this just sounds crazy. You've got a fall inspired wedding, which I did myself so obviously I did a ton of homework on foods and such, with tacos. Are the tacos going to save you THAT much money?

I would honestly save my money on all those appetizers, maybe a fruit tray, but not much else. See if you can pay someone to cook up a few beef brisket and pig jaw or rump roast (I'm a vegetarian and don't know jack about meat so whatever it is you make bbq with, get that) some buns and call it a day. We also got some chips, baked beans, and mac and cheese for sides.

We fed a party of 120 with everything mentioned above for under $600 and had leftovers for awhile.

I'm sorry, but tacos at my fall wedding would have threw me off quite a bit.

I went to a very casual backyard wedding and they had a taco bar. It was actually very good, I enjoyed it more than some dry bland banquet hall food Ive had at other weddings. I think it could definetly work, make it simple. I think the pumpkin and turkey and gravy are a bit much. How about an array of salsa ,like mango salsa, chipotle, tomatillo etc. then different meats like beef, pulled pork and chicken, beans for vegetarians. different cheeses like cotija, cheddar, jack.

Do you think you will miss out if you dont have an actual cake? This same party I went to only had cupcakes and my boyfriend even commented how he thought it was sad they did't cut a cake. He isnt a mushy guy either.

Hope this helps, either way whatever you choose will work out because it will be the most exciting day in your life. :) Congratulations!

A taco bar sounds great. But don't go overboard with all the different things (turkey and gravy? No!) But a variety of salsas and a selections of meats and cheeses would be perfect.

You read my mind! I too am getting married this Fall...and having a taco bar for the reception! I have all the basic fixings of a taco bar on my list, with a variety of salsa's to shake it up. I also read on someone blog that you can have a nacho cheese fountain (like a chocolate fountain) and have lots of things for guests to dip into it! (tortilla chips, pretzels, apples, crackers, etc). I agree with the above poster...not sure the turkey and gravy thing would work out. If you want to try and tie in the fall colors...have the tortilla chips that are dyed red.

This is your day...there are no rules! No one said you have to have "fall themed food" for your fall wedding! In fact..I think it's more memorable if you think outside the box!

Congratulations and enjoy every minute of it!
